Ages ago, invaders threatened Egypt and Pharaoh Aknamkanon learned of an ancient spell that could save his land. He tasked his brother Aknadin to create seven Millennium Items, giving his high priests, the Sacred Guardians, the power to summon Duel Monsters. But Aknadin hadn't told the Pharaoh creating the Millennium Items required sacrificing the people of Kul Elna. To atone for his ignorant sin, the Pharaoh offered himself to the Gods, asking for the safety of his son, Atem.
But unknown to the Pharaoh, a boy survived the Kul Elna sacrifice. As the vengeful Bandit King Bakura, the boy used the Ba, or spirit energy of Kul Elna's victims, to create the Demon Ka, Diabound, and robbed Aknamkanon's tomb. He then fought the Sacred Guardians, claiming their Millennium Items, and opposed Atem. Using the items, Bakura offered his body to resurrect the Dark God Zorc Necrophades, but using a powerful spell, Atem sealed himself and Zorc in the Millennium Puzzle.
Fast forward to the 20th century. Archaeologist Solomon Muto survived the traps in Atem's tomb and discovered the Millennium Puzzle. Unable to solve it, he opened the Kame Game shop and his game-addict grandson Yugi found the Millennium Puzzle. After eight years of attempts, Yugi finally solved it only to become possessed by a serious, sadistic gaming spirit named Yami Yugi. Have fun!

Well far into the future in 5Ds, KaibaCorp decided to make Duel Runners, motorcycle-shaped Duel Disks, and they were used for Turbo Duels. Turbo Duels were made to be more exciting and dangerous and activating spells required Speed Counters. In Arc-V in an alternate dimension called the Synchro Dimension, the poor people of The City started riding motorcycles as they duelled as a symbol of freedom.
There are plenty of Yu-Gi-Oh! series to choose from and I'll try to summarize the first arcs of each show as stupidly as possible.
Original: Yugi Muto has to rescue his grandpa's soul from the creator of a popular children's card game by participating in a card tournament.
GX: Jaden/Judai Yuki basically goes to Hogwarts for a children's card game.
5Ds: Yusei Fudo builds a motorcycle so that he can escape segregation and get his favourite card back from his ex-best friend.
Zexal: Yuma Tsukumo, a kid who is terrible at the card game, teams up with a ghost in order to collect 99 cards.
Arc-V: Yuya Sakaki wants to be an entertainer and creates a new type of card that's exclusive to himself.
Vrains: Yusaku Fujiki plays card games on hoverboards in virtual reality.
Yugiou anime is weird. Just read manga instead - it makes sense and ends when it should've ended instead of dragging on and inventing some dumb gimmicks...
There is nothing wrong with the rest of the series if you just treat them as spin-offs. Even the gimick get fun.
Except ZEXAL. Fuck ZEXAL
Meh, ARC-V is worse. ZEXAL had a slow start, but ARC-V was just overly rushed.

I'm kind of surprised that, at the end, they didn't include something along the lines of, "Now join Yugi, along with his friends, as they learn the secrets of Yami Yugi and his past, travel across the land, and face many opponents in over-the-top battles of what is, ultimately, a children's card game. Have fun!"

Back in the days when the game was good, if you have Pot of Greed and Delinquent Duo on the first turn, you automatically win, thats why its banned. Pot of Green allows you to draw two cards without any cost and Delinquent Duo only cost 1000 life points to discard two cards from your opponent, see how op it is with no cost?!

season 3 and 4 really suffered. I think if you cut them, and putt 2-3 episode stories, so it can strengthen the bond between yami and yugi to make then end stonger

Yugi Moto = Yugi Muto (Muto pronounced Moo-to)
Yami Yugi is simply known as "Other Yugi" "Other Me (For Yugi)" or "Nameless Pharaoh" until he gets Atem.
Joey Wheeler = Katsuya Jonouchi
Tea Gardner = Anzu Mazaki
Tristan Taylor = Hiroto Honda
Seto Kaiba and Mokuba are safe
Serenity Wheeler = Shizuka Kawai (No, not Japanese for cute, that has an additional "i")
Solomon Moto = Sugoroku Muto
Bakura is pronounced "Bah-ku-ra" and not "Ba-koo-ra"
Mai Valentine = Mai Kujaku
Maximillion Pegasus = Pegasus J Crawford

Those are the main ones you have to watch out for, but hopefully that should clear some confusion when referring to each.
yami means dark, not other. Dark yugi, dark marik, dark bakura
Bolik The Japanese never called Atem “Yami Yugi”, that was the 4Kids Asshats thinking they’re cultured by giving Atem a Japanese name. Yugi called Atem “Mou Hitori no Boku” which does mean “Other me”, while everyone else either called him “Mou Hitori no Yugi”, which means “Other Yugi” or Nameless Pharaoh.
mega sean I do not know how they were calling him in japanese and I do not know if he was ever called yami yugi (in 4kids and original dub, he was also never called yami yugi), however he was know as yami yugi, which as I said means dark yugi, not other yugi.
Bolik That’s What happens when the dubbing company doing it are asshats, there’s zero consistency and sucks major ass. My advice? Rewatch Yu-Gi-Oh in Japanese subs. Forget everything you know about the series (Except the cards, since they’re here to stay :P), and relearn everything from scratch. Anything that you remember that was in the dub that doesn’t appear in the Japanese essentially never happened and added for stupid reasons and anything that you see that you don’t remember was the result of sloppy editing (Guns and whatnot).
I won’t judge you if you stick with the dubs, you’re your own person, after all, but if you want the _true_ Yu-Gi-Oh experience, Japanese subs are the only way to go, unless they redub it with zero changes, which is highly unlikely.

More like Yami Yugi was an amnesiac Atem's ghost who might've went crazy from isolation in the puzzle. The spirit in the Millenium Ring, on the other hand, was definitely a mix of Bandit King Bakura and Zorc. That being said, since the Millennium Items are connected to Zorc there is a possibility using them eventually corrupts the users with Zorc's essence/evil.
I could be wrong though. It has been a while since I read and/or watched Yu-Gi-Oh!

Actually didn't know that part about Atem's father sacrificing himself, pretty cool, and explains why Atem was ruling as a boy with no idea what he was doing.
I've always loved the original Yugioh, but I still thought the premise was kinda stupid (still loved that premise tho), but hearing it explained like this makes it much less stupid, and makes me love it more

Just now thought of this, but could the atem of season 0 be all sadistic because of zorc, then slowly changes back to the real atem as he fights more for yugi and his friends? Or something??
Always seemed like a weird plothole wirh how atem's personality just sorta changes by duel monsters, and while i doubt this was their actual intent, it would explain that
Atem might've went crazy from the amnesia and isolation in the Puzzle for millennum. Interacting with Yugi and his pals probably healed his sanity along with his memories.
The puzzle is the only millennium item that contains the forces of both light and darkness.
And it evolved to card games on motorcycles after awhile

They make it sound like it’s an endless cycle every few thousand years.
Read the manga, it's so much better and it's more violent- it just adds to the suspense. Instead of being sent to the "shadow realm" or whatever, people ACTUALLY die in pretty brutal ways. I recommend it a lot actually.
