I never said manufactured…. I was talking about the deposit locations on label. And it’s not a soda that’s unique to Maine. It’s originally made in Massachusetts but bottled in 7 different locations in the USA and sold across the entire world. Yes, it’s sold in Hawaii too.
My comment about Hawaii being on label was in reference to him saying the bottle was over 30 years old. That’s impossible because Hawaii didn’t even start their bottle deposit until 2002. So for it to read Hawaii as an accepted deposit, the bottle must be 2002 or newer. A little research shows that “nostalgia” label on the old bottle was produced from 2012-2016 , for a total of 44 months
My favorite part about all your videos is the way you always start them with "Hey, everyone," before launching into your explanation about what we're going to do today, which sounds like my high school history teacher walking in through the side door and informing us about how we're going to learn about prohibition or something during that lesson.
I think the "Old" one there might be a replica. The side of the bottle shows a website from a company that was established in 1991, and website Creation around 1998.
I'm so intrigued by your explanation of soda bottle caps. I never even noticed that the gaskets disappeared, but you're right! I remember seeing them on soda bottles as a small kiddo, and now as an adult I never see any. Thank you for showing me something that I never noticed, I can't believe I didn't give it a second thought
Came back to your channel after years.... I'm so happy you still make content,!!!! Super grateful. You never fail to peak my curiosity and love of our worlds history
If i had to guess, the "floaty" bits may be related to the primary flavoring of Moxie, gentian root extract. Especially since you dont tend to see similar "floaties" in drinks like Coca Cola that are very similar ingredients-wise otherwise.
I worked at a bottling plant in the late 70's when glass bottles were reused. If you look at the bottle cap, some had the name of the bottling company and the town where it was made printed on it. Some of those used bottles that came back were pretty gross. I would throw away the really bad ones, ones that smelled like gasoline, etc.
You're absolutely right about plastic being more permeable. I work in a science lab and this lab has been in the same lab space for decades. I've seen unopened bottles of water and saline with the original manufacturer seal still around the cap that have lost 25% of their volume after 10 years. I also had some soda I bought in plastic bottles that had been expired about a year. I tried drinking it and the taste was so horrible that I had to throw them out. Glass is always better if you can get it!
Moxie is definitely an acquired taste. I love the stuff, but it was better 50 years ago. There is an annual Moxie Festival in Lisbon, Maine. It's held the first weekend in July.
I think they've changed the formula. When I first tried it during the Coke crisis of the 80s it took a lot of getting used to. The flavor was really unique. Today's Moxie tastes like root beer. What's your opinion? I'm relying on a 40 year old memory and of course I'm 40 years older. Would any other older Moxie drinkers please way in with your opinions.
@@joshuarosen465 Moxie drinker as a kid from the 1960s. It was definitely more "tangy" back then. We knew the people who bottled Moxie in Worcester Massachusetts. They would give us Moxie concentrate, which was great on vanilla ice cream, and to mix in with a glass of milk.
Cheers, toilet!! LOL! People have asked me regarding Moxie how I can drink that stuff. My parents gave me some to drink when I was six. I admit it I didn’t care too much for it at first, but eventually I learned to like it. I visited mom’s family in MA every year growing up, and that helped too. Keep up the great work on your videos…I thoroughly enjoyed this one! Thank you.
Serious question: are you sure the vintage soda is 30 years old because it has a website on it for realsoda. Curious on when products started putting websites on them. I can't recall anything doing that in 93
Im happy I found your other channels. I have been letting them play as I work. Lots of interesting stuff. I lived in Lisbon Maine for a bit. They had a moxie day and parade claiming it came from there lol. I was always skeptical!
Oregon is between VT and CT on the old bottle . i think you over looked it because its in a different place because of the addition of Hawaii on the new bottle .
I love Moxie. I've bought it here in Indiana at a specialty soda shop, and really liked it. I like bitter drinks, I've had a few different gentian root drinks and liked them all. Moxie reminds me of a much more potent root beer flavor. Glad to see the ingredients are identical.
There’s a soda shop back in my home town in Texas and they carry sodas from all over the United States and some international soda. They carry Moxie. I had never heard of it before then. Definitely an acquired taste but my family loves it!
From what I hear it’s like less sweet root beer. I’m going to grab some next time I’m at a store. Even if you don’t live in an NE state you can find it with the other glass bottle sodas or at Cracker Barrel.
You are correct, I have never heard of Moxie. Apparently, it's bottled in 6 locations. Mostly up North. I love learning about products that I've never been aware of. Thank you for doing this video!!
Someone may have mentioned it but the version you get in cans and plastic bottles in Maine is produced by Coca-Cola. It uses corn syrup and is a more modernized version. The one you find in glass bottles is produced by a different company but is allegedly more authentic with cane sugar and what not. You can actually find this version all over the place. I think most cracker barrels sell it for example. I never seem to see it in grocery stores though.
