  • Learn to use Fusion 360's solid operations, specifically the object cut operation, in order to interact different models with each other and to add detail to your models!

    • Getting Started with F...
In yesterday’s video, we talked about some solid modeling tools inside of Fusion 360 that can be very helpful for creating various shapes. In today’s video, I wanted to talk about some ways that we can remove material, cut holes, and make various kinds of adjustments to shapes to make them look certain ways inside of Fusion 360 using the cut operation.
To do this, you need to understand the way that most tools work inside of Fusion 360. By default, when you create a 3D shape with a tool, it gets created as a new body. This means that it’s getting added into Fusion as a completely new, separate object - not interacting with anything else inside of your model.
However, most tools have a toolset that not only allows them to create new bodies, but also allows them to interact with existing shapes in a way that gives you more options.
For example, let’s say that we have our cylinder here. Let’s create a sketch object in the center base of this object. Now, if we extrude this object up, you’ll see that it automatically turns red. The reason for this is that Fusion 360 is picking up that this object is intersecting with another body and has therefore decide that in this context, we might want to use our second object to modify our first object. There are several ways that you can do this, but in this case, you can see how this second object got set to “cut.”
This means our object will remove material wherever it intersects with any other objects that it touches. This can be a very precise way to cut holes inside of objects.
This doesn’t only work on flat surfaces like the top of our cylinder, but also on curved surfaces like the edge of our cylinder.
The cut operation is also available when two objects intersect each other, like if we were to draw a sphere and a box. We could use this to remove part of the box where the sphere intersects.
Another way that we can use the cut operation is by drawing profiles, then using 3d tools to create shapes that we can use to cut away material. For example, let’s say we wanted to cut a recess n the face of our cylinder. What we would do is create a sketch on the vertical axis of the profile we wanted to cut into the object. We could then use a tool like the revolve tool to extrude that in a circle, and set it to cut to create our recess.
This is much more advanced, but you could also project a path on a form or a shape, then use it to extrude/remove material along a more complex shape as well.

Hi everyone! I'd love to hear a bit about how you've used the cut operation in your models - let me know in the comments below! :)

      Hi Justin,
I tried to cut a curved rectangle through a rectangle like you did, however I didn't get the option for Cut, Instead I basically got a tail coming out of either end!
I'm not sure what kind of things determine whether the cut option will be there or not.
Thanks in advance, loving the series

This is only part 4 of the getting started series and it probably doubled my knowledge of Fusion 360!! I did what most hacks/hobbyists do, started using Fusion 360 and googled what I needed to know, making a ton of mistakes along the way. Not to mention wasting a ton of time with trial and error. And although I gained marginal skills using Fusion 360, I decided to go through this series and I have palm-slapped my head dozens of times! I wish I knew about you and this series in the beginning!! THANK YOU for your contribution. I'm a fan now big time!

You sir, simplified and solved a problem I was working on for a couple days.. Thank you so much! it was so easy, I just overlooked adding a sketch on another plane then making my cut.. you're freaking awesome.

Another winning video! Justin if I might make a suggestion, what beginners are lacking is a concrete way of applying all these terrific skills and techniques to an actual instructor-led project. This would solidify the understanding of how the tools work and commit them to mental "muscle" memory. Just a thought. Keep up the terrific work!

Thank you so much. I've been trying to reach myself how to use fusion 360 for a few months and this is one of the better tutorial on fusion ive seen.
Don't use keyboard shortcuts because even if you say what the command is, newer users don't know what it does, looks like or functions like yet so it makes it more difficult to follow along

    • @TheFusionEssentials
      @TheFusionEssentials  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That's a bit tough - honestly the best modeling practice IS to use keyboard shortcuts, and I want to encourage people to use them, which gets tricky if I don't use them in videos, but I try my best to describe what I'm doing as well

For anyone unable to see the 'cut' operation after extruding, it's because you haven't specified dimensions for the rectangle sketch. Use the 'Sketch Dimension' tool, keyboard shortcut D to define dimensions and after that, the revolve will show the 'cut' operation.

Bet you dont know this. Say you have a block on fusion 360 and you want to delete a pear shape out of it. Above you have the pear floating there. If you lower it down into the block you can see its shape in blue highlight. How to delete the shape out of the block though?

I love your tutorials but holy crap. Every time you say, "Well lets say..." it means buckle up because you are going to press a whole lot of buttons and do stuff we never talked about really really fast and i have to pause and rewind twice or three times to catch what you did. I like the faster pace of your tutorials but sometimes you just jump to light speed doing things you never showed us.

I like your Videos but you say they are for a beginner . You start out at a resonable pace but as you near the end you start to go too fast. I even have a separate screen to follow you that I stop and start to emulate your drawing. But you seem to be under some time restraints at near the end of you video and do not include all the steps to complete the project. I know you know what you are doing , I am trying to learn. Repitition is the key until you have the concepts down fast. I am always able to do the first part but always struggle near the ends. I suggest break up the videos or slow down. I suspect another reason is the version of 360 we are using. I have the latest free version. You i suspect are using a teacher version and I find the commands on screen displays differ. I know that is not your fault . Please slow down . Maybe redo some of the beginners lessons with newer version,
    Thank you
