While newcomers discover what makes these titles so compelling, it's interesting for long-time players to look back on some of them, specifically Fallout 4.
Announced in June 2015 and launched just a few months later, Fallout 4 received extensive buzz as Bethesda's next big thing after The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. It created headlines due to its settlement building, brand new setting and story, improved gunplay, revamped dialogue system and many other features. When it finally launched, it was a critical and commercial success.

In FO3, the atmosphere was amazingly dark and truly immersive as the first time that the lone wanderer experiences the outside world… as do we! Then the people… raiders, enclave, outcasts, cannibals, slavers, the brotherhood, little lamplight, the pitt raiders, TROGS, aliens, omg, so many, many cool enemies and locations (rivet city and the pitt) VERUS in FONV, we got a bland and very orange world… shot in the head point blank and buried 3-6 ft into the ground yet we survived… wow. We are a courier of the Mojave yet we know nothing about the land… or who’s who… real immersive intro… then the enemies are Roman-esk soldiers wearing dresses under their 3 metal plates tied to their chest, lol, “powder puff gang,” blue lizards, blue super mutants, blue caza-bugs… the heck? I guess they used blue textured enemies to counteract all that orange, brown and yellow. NCR rangers, mr house and the strip quests are the only things that i actually enjoyed. You can call it an RPG, but it was a bad game overall. It doesn’t touch fallout 4 at all, but I’ll stop there. 😅
You shut the hell up! If current Bethesda touches New Vegas it'll be such a damn nightmare! Heck even current Obsidian lost a good chunk of the people who made New Vegas what it was.

I did like the power armor, weapons, crafting, customizations and upgrades though.
Base building should be a feature, not a borderline core component to keep NPCs quiet.
Those gripes aside, I did moderately enjoy it.
Just skip the museum in Concord.

if you aren't playing Survival you can totally get along without them. totally.
I personally loved to build them up, have a few that are robots-only, lots of places to rest up and Craft, store extra things...music playing, robots beepin and boopin around in the fields of crops....
All the workbench mechanics definitely went a long way towards making your items and player home really feel like *yours*

I completed Fallout 4 when it first released, I loved it, I ended up with somewhere like 12 sets of power armour and a huge base. I just bought it again after watching the series to play it on my Steam Deck. It runs so well on the deck too.
I just got my Steam Deck OLED in the mail and am watching the show right now too. Also coincidentally considering picking Fallout 4 back up to try on the SD too lol. What kind of settings are you running and what fps are you getting? I heard this game's physics start to get wonky over 60 fps. I wouldn't know cause I've only ever played the game back on Xbox One at 30 fps
@@CargoShorts7 I'm on ultra settings, with some options set to high, I run cryoutilities on deck and have vram set to 4gb, so far its running smoothly at well over 30fps, often at 60fps.
i play wit mods on pc it already had 4k 240 fps available. the next gen update adds nothing for pc players except ultra wide monitor support and the enclave quest. feel so bad for console players that were stuck on the ps4 for 9 yrs without 60 fps lmao
I completed it, but didn't explore. I just got my deck oled and bought it for 9 bucks for the complete game. I want to go back and explore all the map now.

Fallout 3 was my very first Fallout experience and I have such fond memories of it. "What's up wastelanders? This is Three Dog ahhwwwooooo!" lol. Then it was New Vegas, which I also love dearly. Then 4 came out and while I enjoyed it back in 2015, it just didn't quite have the same magic as 3 and NV, for me at least. But I'm watching the show now and it's inspiring me to play one of the games again. Even tho I love 3 and NV, they could definitely use a fresh coat of paint, so I think I may actually dive back into Fallout 4 and give it another try
I feel the exact same way. Everything in Fallout 3/NV was very memorable and nostalgic. I was so hyped for Fallout 4 and even got the season pass. It was fun at first but I realized that quests were really linear and writing wasn't as good as previous games. Most quests only had 1 good choice whereas previous games really made you contemplate what is the best solution. To this day I don't remember anything from Fallout 4, it was so forgettable. I swear the people who really enjoyed Fallout 4 have never experienced the magic of the previous games.

I really love FO4 when it is modded, but I never really talked to anyone who was excited by the original story. Oxhorn's videos were the closest I saw to it. Even then I think he said he used some mods.

I do feel the dialogue choices suck, though. Did then, do now.
There's plenty of other things to enjoy, but, it's far more limiting than Fallout 3 or New Vegas...and dialogue with NPCs and all the choices you can make is kind of one of the biggest reasons to play a Fallout game.
There's better shooters out there.
They do cause they are the same awful system from Mass Effect, with all and the binary alignment system.
The overwhelming narrative you'll hear about this game if you talk to enough people is that it's a great game but not a great Fallout game. Which I tend to agree with, but I think it deserves more credit as a Fallout experience.

This. People expect a narrative RPG with choices. FO4 was the safest RPG possible with no real choices and stats (outside of combat) reduces to even more meaningless nothing (Far Harbor did try to correct this). The murdering of the RPG elements of the game and turning it more and more into a pure action game is what people hate.
It featured the most limiting player backstory (confirmed by social video testing) - as well as the voiced protagonist - coupled with the failsafe minutemen faction .. Fallout 4 experimented with a lot of story elements that fell flat with players.
But thankfully it being the most advanced in terms of world building and combat saves it from the shelves as players can easily get lost in the gameplay loop.

My copy had a game breaking bug where I couldn't build the first teleporter and couldn't progress in the storyline.
This unlocked a deep anger for me… I’m pretty sure the same thing happened to me my original play through when the game came out and that’s why I don’t look back at the game too fondly

Close to launch on ps4, my game would not stop crashing in the MIT portion of the main quest where you're playing hot and cold. Real fun, just have to either stop playing or do something else entirely bc the game is a buggy mess.
Preston Garvey always having another quest for you is a MYTH. If you stop advancing the main storyline and just focus on Preston's quests he will eventually stop giving them to you. This extends to the Radio Freedom quests. You know who flies under the radar and DOES offer endless quests? Knight Rhys and Scribe Halen. Yet no one mentions them.

I have a mod that greatly reduces the number of mm quests. Plus big defense actually factors in now (eg if you have 200 defense, not too much will screw with said settlement)
Rhys and Halens quest are also only endless if you dont advance the story, if you join the boS you get other much more interesting quest when you advance the main story.
The reason why everyone is so Pissed about Prestion is because he is much harder to ignore cause 1. he is a companion to take with . 2. he hangs around your main base most of the time. and 3. he even gives you these quest if you just pass him by (thought that last one might be fixed by now but at least back when it came out if was like that.) .so in conclusion he is ALOT worse then Rhys and Halen.
@@mermidion7552 I'm currently level 107 mainly having done Rhys and Halen quests and I have yet to go back to Virgil with the decoded courser chip. Yet Preston barely acknowledges that I exist. At what point in the story have you found that Rhys and Halen stop giving you quests? Captain Kells gave me three squire training missions before he stopped. He keeps saying I should take another squire but then walks off.
As for Preston, I just move to the Red Rocket where you get Dogmeat so no Preston or Marcy agro for me! :) That and I tend to play Lone Wanderer so I don't shoot companions or they shoot me. :)
Its so damn difficult to fairly rate and is so heavily dependant on what metrics you judge it by.
- Base unmodded game to say it is beyond flawed is an understatement.
- Modded game its an amazing game with a very high ceiling and can literally have you rack up insane playtime without getting bored.

@dutchdude1985 i don't know, in my personal issue, it has the same issues as skyrim. Lackluster storyline, but amazing side quests. That said, I think even base game Fallout is good, because nobody plays these games for the main quest - they play them for the detail, the wild deep side quests that can be found.
Fallout 4 than isn't a bad Fallout game, and my opinion is a great fallout game with some poor decisions(voiced and directly forced protagonist, workshop dlcs, etc.)
I do agree that it's better with mods, but that's almost every single game in existence. Besides, if we're gonna bash a Fallout game, it should be the one that still doesn't feel like Fallout - Fallout 76
@@Weird-Will I absolutely love Fallout 4 and for me it is a personal all-time favorite but that does not mean i will not acknowledge the base game as it was once launched has many glaring flaws in it. I can love something yet speak objective or impartial about its qualities or inherent flaws.
@@dinoguy6177 I am in no means bashing Fallout 4 this is not my intent at all, for me i absolutely adore the game but having said that i am not blind to its flaws. Yes ofcourse many games can be improved with modding but Fallout 4 does feel like one more "in need" of those quality of life changes.
As for Skyrim i will simply have to take your word for it as i have not played it, same with Fallout 76 with all the drama surrounding its launch i simply did not bother. I understand by now it is an actual worthwhile title and nowhere near its release state but i just never got started with it.
You are because the game even with mods is still meh. The games main story doesn't hold well for anyone to hang around the game for long. Everyone is not interesting. Side quests are dull. Fallout 4 felt like a mediocre game. @@dutchdude1985

Fallout 76 carries this to its logical extreme too. Anyone hoping Bethesda would make games that aren't bootleg Borderlands clones will be disappointed. Starfield even kept the same asinine "legendary loot" system.
Bought Fallout 4 a few years ago and loved it. Restarted it again after finishing the TV show, and I still love it.
I played Fall Out 4 for the first time when all the expansions and graphics updates were available. So my experience was amazing. It’s one of my most beloved gaming experiences.
I loved FO4 from the start, and liked it just as much as 1, 2, 3, and NVegas. Having the option to build up outposts or full on towns as we saw fit seemed great as an option to expand in the gameplay and plot.
Fallout 4 will forever be one of the greatest gaming experiences I’ve had and hearing it’s coming back at 60 fps I’m itching to jump back in and tune in the radio

My Red Rocket by Sanctuary is a self contained tower block with 20 settlers and 90% happiness.
Challenging settlement because you reach the build limit super fast.
settlements was the weakest part of the game. go play minecraft or fortnite instead. keep that crap out of my fallout games

Mods made Fallout 4 the game I still play today. Also the reason I don't play Fallout 76 at all no mods. You can't give the players the ability to play however they want and then just take it away or put it behind a pay wall.
Fallout 76 is nothing but repairing weapons/armor/guns, if they allowed mods so things didn't degrade I'd play it, but I'm not grinding for hours just to repair equipment.

I would have gladly traded settlement building for more unique towns and characters like in new Vegas or fallout 3. The world seemed much more empty in that sense to me
My first character I was the conventional wasteland hero, built up a ton of settlements, all armed to the teeth. Most places I would go to I would be able to call in an artillary bombardment and/or Minutemen back up. It really did/does feel like building an army from the ground up. I'm sure I will go back to that playthrough at some point.
But then survival mode dropped, and I felt like I was playing a completely different game. I started with a new character and ignored settlements completely. I never even helped/met Preston et al. yet. Tried to help them but kept getting my arse kicked so ended up leaving it. I struggled my way to Diamond City with Dogmeat and have stuck with him ever since as he is cute, helpful and knows how to STFU. My character is a high charisma and intelligence build, so I can no longer just tank my way through fights. This time around, every last enemy a huge threat- just like they would be irl.
Survival mode makes F4 feel a lot more like an actual RPG, with real moral choices emerging organically from the mechanics of the gameplay because of how hard it is to survive (especially at the start). Even though I miss the in-depth faction stuff of New Vegas, this game still has a lot of freedom to play how you want. I've loved every Fallout game since F3 for different reasons, and F4 was no exception.
Fallout 4 summarized is essentially a game that is as big as an ocean, yet as deep as a bucket of water.
And then someone will come and go "you can say that about every Bethesda game".
I remember when Bethesda used to make groundbreaking masterpieces. Entire TES for example.
"Like a puddle that is a mile wide, but an inch thick."
If you play it as a looter shooter with a focus on building your character it actually does have some depth.

Fallout 4 has more content than any previous fallout before it. How the f*ck is that shallow
The settlement system which is 1. Bad and 2. Pointless and 3. In the way, and then there's the calls to save them, and then there's the minutemen. Maybe on their own they wouldn't be too bad, but together they are things I just do my best to ignore as they continue to nag me in my ear.
Both are optional.
I keep having to look up why im stuck to find put said quest glitched and there's no work around for it.
I enjoyed fallout 4 from start to finish I don’t nitpick and complain about every little thing like a lot of gamers do sometimes I think games just want to find something to complain about rather than just playing the game and enjoying it

Todd Howard got a free pass for botching 2 Fallout launches, blatant LIES and constantly attacking modders and the user base. Few years later he gets rewarded by a successful merchselling show with his Last Name and self-insert character everywhere and millions to his name

The whole building settlements, having to defend them; and the BoS being the MAIN faction again did it for me. I loved Fallout 3 exploring, and numerous side quests
Wasteland Workshop, Automatron, vault and contraptions are about as much of a DLC as the horse armor in oblivion. 😂
The settlement system, plus the extremely repetitive "go to location, clear out baddies" quests that endlessly repeat during a gamers playthrough of FO4!

Those were things that can mostly be ingnored, and alot of people, including myself, actually enjoyed. New Vegas is my favorite but FO4 is good in my opinion. The only thing I'm not a fan of is the way dialog options were handled. But it wasn't a deal breaker, and I spent the most time in 4 sand-boxing my settlements.
Yeah more covenant like settlements with conspiracies and such vs settlement and fetch quests. I still love the game though and am of course going through it again after the TV series@@kyelhogwarts8175
I tried going back to it and it crashes every time i load up
Had a helluva time loading it back on my PS4. Finally got it to install by starting the game at the same time the update was downloading. Just ignored the failed install message and let it run for a couple hours while I did other stuff.
I still love the game. Companions are still broke, though. Without mods, the only good companion other than robots is curie after her quest line. She is the only npc that I have found that actively interacts with the world looting, changing weapons, switching strats between encounters. I feel like all of them were meant to, but broke and somehow, she stayed unbroken. Maybe because of her transition, maybe, she somehow stayed unbroken. I'm not sure, but I've tested it for many hours. Only npc worth bringing along vanilla.
I took Valentine with me toFar harbor for the added story and dialogue. He’s so useless. strong at least pulls Agro and beats enemies down in Melee. Most of the enemies either rush right past him or beat him down quick
Dogmeat always had poignant reflections and riveting dialect for me as a companion….😂
@beastieking1 yeah, but that's pretty much all strong is good for that and carry weight, but you have to load him down manually. If we could just set them to autoloot certain items or something, it would be so nice. I dove hard into the settlement building back in the day and having an npc that will literally help you loot and crafts stimpacks not that you need them late game but in survival mode it's a game changer. I think before releasing some one 💩 the bed and broke the companions for balance and overlooked curies 2nd form. She is op even over strong 💪
@alexanderovercash315 I agree next to curie he is at least the most useful companion utility wise to a degree anyway since you can actually tell him to do some random things for you. Find me this, grab that, etc.
Curie just does everything the player does minus crafting and building. Test her out. She will kill a dude, loot him, take grenades off his corpse, and then use them on his buddies and then grab the best melee weapon off their corpes and beat the last guy sensless with it. If she stops looting guns,ammo, and grenades, it means she's almost encumbered, so you know it's time to sell or store/dismantle.
Then, after the fight, she will craft a stimpack and give it to you to heal up. She's the Swiss army knife with a French accent. I'm tellin' you. I spent like a good 5 or 6 hours one day looting buildings for scrap and guns and armor to dismantle for my towns, and I tested all of them in multiple buildings.
The rest of them have no independence. Just inventories that you can put armor on and give guns to. Which just makes them feel as useless as the vanilla settlers, but they follow you around.

Same here. Couldn’t finish final mission on far harbour due to bug. Things like that just turn me off. I took a long hiatus and came back to destroy the institute but my itch to complete dlc before the main quest line remained unscratched.
I do remember going from Witcher 3 to Fallout 4 and being incredibly disapointed. In witcher I could climb a hill at night and find distant camps by firelight. In F4 there was nothing loaded after like 200 meters, beside the most basic building models. And the character models, man.. But nothing was more irritating than what they did to leveling and dialogue systems. Quit after 25 hours.
Hello, just finished a Fallout 4 playthrough on hardcore and went through most of the narrative of the game and exploration, and despite my criticisms, it's easily one of the best experiences I've had in a game for a while. Here's my current opinion on the game. First, a fact. Key settlement features were bugged or just didn't work and were never fixed. There were many bugged level 4 merchants, which to me is probably the single most important settlements mechanic that could have been. It's what you build into settlements for. That or have other unique settlers who can give you more quests that you unlock as you develop your settlement(s), which can be treated by having the Sims Settlement mod if you'd like to see more into that. I think that would have been awesome if this was a feature already in the game. I ended up not deeply investing into creating my settlements since I was making bank without them through perks alone, and I miss none of the game otherwise aside from some forgettable radiant quests. It just felt like the current system lacked a "wow" and end objective. Otherwise, it's just a building simulator you can completely avoid aside from a small part of the story.
My next opinion. Fallout 4 is actually an amazing shooter and crafter game, but lacked in actual RPG elements. I felt the shoot and loot was very crisp. Getting to build my own weapons and armor felt extremely satisfying, making combos with my perks unique and had me actually strategizing each level earned.
By the time I was done with the game, I was level 150 and felt like I didn't really need to grind to get levels after since I had all the perks I had interest in. Idiot Savant will carry you through early game. It should be your first perk, period.
Time to watch the show now.

I can't speak for anyone other than myself, but TWO very specific things are what kept me from enjoying Fallout 4 as much as the other Fallout (or even just Bethesda) games:
1) The Settlements. I actually think these are very cool as an optional gameplay addition, but interweaving them into the main story (and therefore FORCING players to create and maintain them) was a big NO for me. I hated having to constantly bounce back and defend or upgrade my settlement.
2) The black-and-white morality of Factions. In Skyrim, you can literally choose almost every Faction if you want. Outside of the two that fight in the main quest, you can do a playthrough with every faction. In Fallout 4, once you choose a Faction (sometimes even without realizing you 'chose' it), you are instantly a target for LITERALLY every other faction. And you can;t change it unless you go back on your save.
I mean, that kinda happens in NV too if you do anything against Caesar's Legion. All of a sudden you have random soldiers spawning onto the map and chasing you down from specific.points like It Follows.
It’s called choice and consequence, THATS GOOD for an RPG. It adds replayability and makes you actually have to think about your decisions. Only problem is the story was bland with poor writing and there was next to 0 RPG mechanics.
I'm fine witht he faction thing. It's supposed to be an rpg. I do like being able to do all the faction quests in elder scrolls but wish the main story would have some more decisions in it, bethesda continuously reduced choice and consequences after morrowind

4 was a shooter and it was a step backwards from New Vegas in terms of story and choices. It was also more cartoony compared to 3 or NV
My only issue with Nuka world is that you couldn’t bring the minute men, BOS or Institute and remove the raiders you had to solo it

Because by previous fallout standards, 4 had improved gameplay and world and reduced rpg elements, story, perks, etc. It left behind the most important parts of fallout for things were just expected from a game made 6 years later. The technical aspects were definitely better than the older fallouts, but they were not impressive compared to other games released at or before 2016

Going back and playing new vegas last week I realised how much 4 lacked the rp features. Asides from speech checks I can barely remember skill checks where as new vegas has 10 in the first 20 minutes
That is the narrative but it's not true. Ultimately Fallout 4 systems are just as deep as Fallout 3's, they just look dumber.
Eh I agree when comparing it to FO1,2 and NV but people forget 3 had just as dumb and linear of a story and it’s mechanics weren’t really any deeper than 4s. 4 just consolidated the systems a bit that make it look more simplified on the surface

I adore Fallout 4 since day 1. That's one game I always have installed in all of my systems.
I loved Fallout 4 and still do. Even without using mods is still fun to play. But damn, seeing it everywhere online nows just crazy😂
My favorite thing in fallout 4 is the multiple mods and the change of power armor.
I’ve always felt vanilla 4 is a 6/10 but modded it’s a 10. Such an incredible modding community behind it especially now.

I think survival really played to fo4's strengths. With the focus on combat, looting and the settlement system. I was really hoping bethesda would do it again with skyrim's "survival mode".
I personally don't play fo4 expecting new vegas. I just play it for survival and to have fun shooting stuff and seeing how far i get before i bin it.
Unkillable characters ruined it for me. I missed the text across the top of the screen saying main quest is no longer possible.

You need to uninstall the game and download it again without the Automatron DLC. Unless you have the GOTY edition which includes Automatron. There is a patch coming sometime between the 25-27th that should fix the issue.

@@kingmocling5424 Do you also have Skyrim installed? For some reason it sometimes installs the Fallout DLC into Skyrims files too so you might have to delete Skyrim too. Other than that I think it's just a waiting game for the patch to come out.
I just rechecked and the patch coming on the 25th. I couldn't wait and bought the game for PC as it's on sale on GOG.
As an RPG I loved fallout 3. All npcs killable, karma system, and interesting choices that drastically change the experience of the game. I remember being 12 years old playing that game. Walk into moriarty’s saloon blow off me burkes head, sleep with a hooker, then steal all Moriarty’s shit 😂 man what a game fallout 3 was. Wish they could remaster that game on fallout 4’s engine.

Ever hear of sim settlements 2? One of the best available mods that automates ur settlement builds and comes with a great lengthy fully voiced quest line which is just as good as anything in the base game. Highly recommended.

I'll never understand why so many people try to make the settlement building aspect sound like it was the worst thing ever in a video game.
It takes all of two minutes to build like 3 structures and now all of the crafting materials from that settlement will be available to you back at your home base.

Upgrade your weapons to max damage , unlock ballistic weave as soon as you can if you are not running power armor and carry a lot of stimpacks because on very hard mode i think the emeries do 2.5x damage while you do only half of the display damage but most importantly save often and have fun .
@@joshparadox9143 use the brotherhoods Vertibirds for fast travel, they’re extremely useful in Survival Mode. Another method is use the Institutes teleportation to always be able to get to the center of the map. Survival Mode is amazing, it’s way more fun than playing the game in standard mode as it makes previously useless things into extremely useful things.
I love Fallout 4 especially the settlement building.

Did you change mods mid game? People used to think that was safe. It isn't. I am not even confident that changing the load order is safe, and I have seen Vortex do it without asking.

LOL I wouldnt even call fallout 3 or new vegas an RPG. Fallout 1 and 2 are TRUE rpgs. Betheseda hasnt really made a Western RPG in the traditional sense literally since Morrowind.

Its very much so a RPG not anymore of a looter shooter than 3 or new vegas they are all essentially the same minus the way perks work. But I guess in only speaking facts that's like calling skyrim a looter shooter compared to oblivion.
It’s not a “looter shooter”. That line heavily describes 76. F4 is more of a Minecraft/SIMS with RPG mechanics & of course Bethesda, exploring. The majority of gameplay is around the settlement building.
I just thought the main story and choices fell flat. I enjoy the game, but it's like most things Bethesda put out, like Skyrim. A packed world, but ultimately dull main story.

@@kyos8462 I love Skyrim too. A lot of the side quests were great... minus the thieves guild. But Alduin ended up feeling like such a none threat. Maybe because of the lack of interaction with him. They would TELL you he's the big bad world eater and all, but you never really saw it.
I’ve put hundreds and hundreds of hours into this game like new Vegas and fallout 3. The biggest issues are instead improving the features added by obsidian they outright removed everything. The features they added all have very major issues, settlement building is genuinely a good addition but is barely supported, your neither rewarded or penalised for building up your settlements, their needs are entirely pointless and meaningless. Having it be a necessity is a bizarre decision and there really is a lot less settlements or towns in comparison to fallout 3 and new Vegas, due to them wanting you to build your own which takes away from the game as your own settlements provide nothing but as aesthetics. Power armour is flesh out greatly and you really get the sense of weight and power behind them. They’re completely ruined by being given 30 minutes into the game and not skill capped (requiring training) like every other instalment. The world while huge and detailed lacks alot in terms of world building and story. It’s great to explore but it’s kind of empty exploring. The choices you make within the world are pretty minimal outside of the main story line which is easily the worst story within the series. There are a few genuinely good side quests but pale in comparison to fallout 3 and especially new Vegas. It really isn’t even an rpg anymore, just a first person shooter/melee. It’s genuinely a fun game and if we hadn’t had new Vegas which was a vastly superior but linear improvement from fallout 3, this wouldn’t feel as bad. Bethesda is in line to be one of the worst publishers at the moment, they continually go against what the community wants, creation club, fallout first. Both fallout and elder scrolls are single player games, no one wanted live service online only games but Bethesda did it so be able to profit off of one game for as long as possible rather than make spin offs in between their main games which are taking 10+ years to make. Fallout 4 is a really fun game but a terrible fallout game and Bethesda continually show they don’t care about the community.

Fallout 4 base game was kinda eh. The ingame arsenal left a fair bit to be desired IN MY OPINION. But it definitely got better with the dlc. Lever action rifle, radium rifle, atoms judgement, decembers child, and the AK 47 platform (handmade rifle) made it way better.

It’s only divisive among hardcore Fallout fans. For millions of gamers who didn’t game on PC in the 90s it was their first and only exposure to the franchise. It was BGS who brought it into the mainstream and made it accessible to the masses, and this upset a lot of old school players who didn’t like the direction it was going in. The truth is that even FO2, the brainchild of a very different core team, already started taking it in a bit different direction, shifting the tone to be much goofier. FO3 went back to being darker, then NV leaned sillier again; Lots of tonal whiplashes in this series. Many claim they know what the *real* Fallout is, but part of the fun is how different they all are and as a lifelong fan I love each of them in their own ways.

Fo4 my my intro to fallout, and I hated it. Felt like a rushed game with horrendous gunplay. The building settlements was the only thing I enjoyed.

What I didn't like about Fallout 4 was the writing, story and quests were subpar compared to previous games. Most quests in FO4 only had 1 ending choice while previous games had many and really made you contemplate what the best choice is.

Mid Fallout game (vanilla), but a fun standalone game with fun combat and addictive settlement building. Mods made 4 the best Fallout game ( heck modders are working to remake New Vegas in 4s engine)
I have one gripe with F4, that the main character is not part of Enclave. Bethesda missed a golden opportunity to reform or change the narrative
Fallout 4 is one of my all time favourite games. I was obsessed with building settlements and exploring every corner of the map to find resources to build them. Playing in survival mode is a great challenge too. One of the few games I've platinumed on more than one account.
Will be first time playing it properly when the update comes out, you recommend playing on survival for a first play-through??

I love Fallout 4 since day one. It was the first game i put more than 1000 hours. It has the best companions, the settlement system its awesome and fun. One of the best RPGs ever made.

One thing that's particularly irritating is the settlement system. Specifically the fact you have to micromanage everything from building to the settlers themselves. At the least they could have added random skills (farming, defense, building, etc.) to the settlers. If you don't assign them they would start doing the job related to their skills on their own.
And the 0 kb bug is still in the game to this day

Ooohhh you got me started. Something else that bug me. Trudy, the drug dealers AND the ...kid. I go resolve matters peacefully and what happens? The dealers proceed to park themselves right, RIGHT outside her door and for the ENTIRE rest of the game they DON'T move from there...ever. WHY? There is NO traffic, I AM Trudy's ONLY customer and I can make my OWN drugs, how you supposed to make caps there? Trudy... after things get resolved she goes behind that counter and NEVER moves again. Morning , noon, night ALWAYS there. The kid, oy the kid, HE just sits on the floor rocking back and forth for...EVER. You can't even try to place a cure in his inventory, they ALL get hostile. Past games they would show you SOME affects of your actions, a reason maybe to back and see but with a LOT in this game once you've done it , there's NO reason to go back. Just like the auto robots that were broken fixed them and NEVER had a reason to go back.

Yeah, everything is just in the moment, without progression. It's a shame. It was one of the bosts of bethesda that they could use the ai to make sophisticated npc behaviour, but that seems to have been forgotten.
Sim Settlements 2 does a better job - cleaning up concord, for example.

I've tried 4 times to play FO4 and I just can't get into it. I can play FO 1-3 + NV over and over again though.
Despite its flaws, it’s still my favourite game of all time, especially in terms of atmosphere, characters, quirky humour and its sheer immersion. Perhaps I’m easily pleased, but in the past 9 years, no other RPG or action adventure has made quite the same impression on me.
Fallout 4 is BEST with mods.

@johngonzalez8146 few meaningful choices, being forced to play as a fully voiced protagonist with a previously established backstory, the fact that it doesn't really matter what faction you side with as it barely has an effect on the ending, the over-use of radiant quests to pad-out the game and make it seem like there's more content than there actually is. In the whole game you barely make any decisions that actually matter, there's no stakes to anything, and the whole world feels like empty action movie set locations, that only exist to be a shooting gallery for the player to get a dopamine hit. FO4 isn't an RPG, it's a sandbox shooter
I enjoyed the first 20 or so hours but got to a certain point, believe it was Boston, where the performance on my pc made the game impossible to play. I hope the up coming update fixes those issues because I want to get back into the game.

A lot of good games were shat on during that time simply because we had so many good games coming out, the bar was really high. In hindsight, it really puts things into perspective in terms of just how good we had things back then, compared to the shit releasing these days. Fallout 4 is a masterpiece in today's AAA landscape bugs and all.
So basically history is just repeating itself because in years to come someone will probably be saying the same thing you just said.

I think I more or so enjoyed the mechanics that fallout 4 introduced. I enjoy settlement building because I’ve always felt that Bethesda game worlds are too static. They don’t change regardless of the the impact your player choices supposedly have. My one biggest gripe with New Vegas was that despite clearing a lot of strategic locations, they would never become occupied by one of the major factions. Nipton. The prison. Why can’t they be rebuilt. I like to see an actual positive change in the environment when I do something. Which is why I enjoy the settlement building despite it being kind of pointless. If Bethesda can find a way to make it more meaningful….and perhaps make the locations more interactive, I think it’s a great addition to future games. I like customization too. I think there could have been more dynamic endings available. Like the railroad who I personally didn’t love but don’t understand why they basically always have to die unless you side with them. Overall, I have hundreds of hours in fallout 4 and I’m about to add way more to that number. Here’s hoping fallout 5 comes sooner than we think and stacks up with a game like New Vegas.
One of my favorite things about new Bethesda titles is imagining the insane ways the modding community transform the game. I always see commonalities in TH-cam videos that show just how many other people are having custom fun in the same way as them.
Personally Fallout 4 is my favorite. I like that it is faster, more action based, had less RPG elements to it. I realize I'm in the minority, but its all preference.

The only "controversial" thing about Fallout 4, is the New Vegas elitists. They would go to great lengths to explain how you are not a real gamer for enjoying Fallout 4.
My introduction with Fallout is 4 on my part. It was good at first but it gets boring. Most of my games are fantasy base such as TESV, TESIV, and Witcher.
It is actually my first time playing Post Apocalypse games. To say the least 4 is underwhelming story base. Took me some urging to just try NV as i have low expectation in Fallout as a whole. To say the least, it became on of my all time favorites. So much so it makes me retry playing FO4 again in which i enjoy playing the second time after, though can't say an all time favorite of mine.
There's a reason for hate. Lazy writing, not to mention, it even achieved having less options in weapons and accessories compared to the previous iterations, you cant even compare it to NV with loads and loads of ways to stylize your character and loads of ways to whack your enemies.
Those are just a few problems as there are slew of complaints with fallout 4.
No need to go on for hours explaining when just two hours of playing Fallout 4 explained it plenty. 3&NV are great. 4 is a husk of them.

Having a voiced protagonist limits the game. Devs will write much less dialog options.

For me I played it directly after the Witcher 3 and realized how much of a better game The Witcher was in multiple ways. For example the Witcher managed to minimize loading screens allowing you to explore most of the map and even go inside buildings without the need for a loading screen. Fallout 4 hardly felt like a step up from 2008 Fallout 3 with the constant need for loading screens and minimal graphics update. Another gripe I had with Fallout 4 was the revamped dialogue choices that felt more limiting.
I started this again after beating the game and all DLC a few years ago mostly because the TV show was pretty cool. The graphics don't stand up well to Elden Ring, but the game play is pretty nice (though I'm always running out of ammo!)
