1970 it was issued just after Frabjoy and Runcible Spoon who fell on bad luck. Giorgio Gomlensky and his Marmalade label went bust. Polydor got fed up with trying to bail him out
Absolute gem of a song--both the extended Doctor Father European Pye pressing (5:30), US edited Doctor Father edited US version (3:41), plus the Crazy Elephant alternate earlier version (3:06) on US Bell which exists in both stereo and mono mixes on the double-sided promo. Pure genius and I can never get enough of this brilliant track!
He slept like a child on the verge of a great adventure And dreamt that he had found the forgotten river Aroused by the sight and the sound and the smell of freedom He rose to explore the wealth of his new found kingdom The trees are getting taller and he is getting smaller And he never reached the water before the rain A voice called out to guide him As the jungle closed behind him And he was never ever seen again There ain't no Umbopo There ain't no Umbopo There ain't no Umbopo...
There ain't no Umbopo, there ain't no Umbopo There ain't no Umbopo, there ain't no Umbopo He parked his car at the edge of the forest of Borneo And said good-bye to the world on his short-wave radio He stepped inside without a map to guide him Said he'd travel by the stars and leave the day behind him And he hoped he'd find that he'd be safe tonight And he'd be well-advised to go back home There ain't no Umbopo, there ain't no Umbopo There ain't no Umbopo, there ain't no Umbopo
Kevin’s voice is very distinctive. The amount of range he had was insane. Heck he still has a great singing voice today, probably aged the best vocally along with Graham.
This version is more melodic and refined, however the faster Crazy Elephant version has Graham Gouldman playing a wonderfully fast and intricate bass line.
10CC were major copy cat artists at this point...this was en vogue at this point hence it sounding like Rain in California song...they did tons of bubblegum rock songs too...clever lads trying to build capital for Strawberry studios.
It also never rains in Southern California.
First heard this in the late 60s, early 70s blown away by it then, still blown away today

One of the great underrated songs of all time, and it's by 3/4 of 10CC !!
7.5 CC... :)
There's no other song that gets me as emotional as this one.. absolutely epic. I can play the movie in my head, and its a beautiful adventure...
yep.

Umpobo is the name of the lost paradise the main character in the song is looking for. He get lost in the jungle.
Mystery solved, thanks
At last! A true Pop masterpiece.Sad song, great song!
He slept like a child on the verge of a great adventure
And dreamt that he had found the forgotten river
Aroused by the sight and the sound and the smell of freedom
He rose to explore the wealth of his new found kingdom
The trees are getting taller and he is getting smaller
And he never reached the water before the rain
A voice called out to guide him
As the jungle closed behind him
And he was never ever seen again
There ain't no Umbopo
There ain't no Umbopo
There ain't no Umbopo...
great to find this on here ... thanks.
Brilliant, best version.
An excellent song
Godley and Creme obscurity again by them and Graham Gouldman.
There ain't no Umbopo, there ain't no Umbopo
There ain't no Umbopo, there ain't no Umbopo
He parked his car at the edge of the forest of Borneo
And said good-bye to the world on his short-wave radio
He stepped inside without a map to guide him
Said he'd travel by the stars and leave the day behind him
And he hoped he'd find that he'd be safe tonight
And he'd be well-advised to go back home
There ain't no Umbopo, there ain't no Umbopo
There ain't no Umbopo, there ain't no Umbopo
Such a sad song !
pre 10cc music , you can hear this is the voice of Kevin Godley
@@katiecucumber Agreed, It's defo Lol Creme. Lol's voice has a distinctive exciting and unique ring to it.
@@terryperring104 Lead is Kevin.... take my word for it :)
@@PEC2528 yup it is most definitely Godley. 100%
all the 10cc boys had great voices but no one but Godley had that insane vibrato

Does anyone know what "Umbopo" means? Or where I can get the lyrics to this song?
Love 10cc, and this song is awesome
Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme before they became 10cc.
verse is not unlike the intro vocal on Hotel...
Post Frabjoy and Runicble Spoon but before Hotlegs.
anyone heard the crazy elephant verison?
It's shorter and faster. I like the Doctor Father version more.
Yes. I just bought it for my jukebox although I prefer this version.
This version is more melodic and refined, however the faster Crazy Elephant version has Graham Gouldman playing a wonderfully fast and intricate bass line.

Not sure if I am reading your comment right but in fact Umbopo predates It never Rains in So Cal
