Cat meets squirrel

  • My cat Chelsea gets up close and personal with a squirrel who is more concerned with the peanuts than her presence. Sorry about the initial vertical perspective. I thought I'd get a brief clip shooting vertically, but things changed unexpectedly.
Update April, 2017 - Since I took this video, Chelsea and the squirrels lead a very peaceful co-existence and share the deck nicely. Even the neighbor cat who visits pays the squirrels no attention. I'll look out and see two cats and three squirrels all sitting there looking at each other. Chelsea does like a good game of chase, though. Occasionally the squirrels will indulge her and play.

No, it's believable. My cat wanted to be friends with everything (Skunks, mice, rats, birds). He brought a baby bird home once and ran to the door so I can open it up. He then ran out to the tree where the nest was. Skunk? He just "chilled" with the skunk. They were inches apart and looked very relaxed with each other. I was sweating bullets thinking if my cats gets sprayed, he's not setting foot in the house. Birds hated him. They would swoop down and "boink" him on his head.

We had sparrows and pigeons that would hover outside the window our cat would sit in...between the two cages of zebra finches pulling on his hair. Also squirrels that would hang on the window screen so they could sniff nose to nose.

Squirrels have oral bacterial and bacteria under their nails which is different from that of cats. A scratch or bite, even superficial one, from a squirrel could cause quite a serious abscess in your cat, and result in a nice $300 + vet bill.

My old cat, declawed, brought me a present. And gently laid a mouse at me feet. Looked up at me so proud... The mouse ran away, got into my garage, and had babies soon after!
At 20 pounds and 17 years, he never lost his hunting abilities. But never ate his prey, Thank God. He also brought me a huge live cicada, and a dead bird also. May he rest in peace.
Now have two kittens, very bonded brothers, that play and sleep together. Quite a handful. Glad to rescue them, and give them a home and family, for as long as they will live!

Cats are driven by instinct and a certain amount of emotion, they do not "wonder." What is far more likely is that wild animals are able to identity when a potential predator is actively predatory. The squirrel has probably been observing this cat over a period of time and observes it is well fed. The cat has no compelling reason to attack it.

Sandra Knapp my cat was afraid of hamsters. my hamsters broke out of their cage and were roaming around the house while I was asleep, and I woke up to the cat sitting in the bathtub crying lol....she was terrified of them. when I moved back to my parents house, my mom kept letting the cat outside (she was a completely indoor cat before that, and still never left the yard when let out), and she would sit on the deck and watch the birds and squirrels roam around right in front of her, but never figured out that she could eat them. She became a great bug killer, but she never grasped that anything other than moths were edible lol....

My big tom cat wouldn't think twice about fighting foxes, he tried it on with a squirrel and lost, bit his leg through to the bone, he never chased them again.

The Cat is well fed, so the cat does not need to eat the squirrel to survive. And the squirrel is not threatening the cat in any way - not displaying threatening motions, or gestures, etc. The cat does not need to attack the squirrel, so it doesn't. Cats are very inteligent. Oh, and peanuts are not a kind of food a cat would go after anyway. Nice kitty!!

My cat was mostly an indoor cat except for the times we would sit out on the patio. From the first time (when he was told that good kitties protect the little animals not hurt them) he would just sit there and watch the various critters come and go. He respected all life forms, just like we should.

Would have been much more dramatic if the Squirrel would have attacked an biten the nose of the cat off. 2/10, just an attempt to be a drama but only slightly climactic.
