I just had a floating hand grip with me, and wrapped it around my wrist so it doesn't get away from me underwater. Also, make sure the settings are ideal for underwater shots.
Other than that, you can also get your hands on the GoPro head or chest gear, but the flexibility you get with handheld shots is unmatched.
