Shane was born with a neuromuscular disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy that requires him to use an electric wheelchair. He is the author of several award-winning books, the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah just graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. Her future aspirations include attending graduate school and owning a goat sanctuary. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog.
Shane and Hannah have been dating for 3+ years and living together in Minneapolis for a year. On June 15th, 2019 they got engaged!!!! Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

I have SMA type 2 and my abilities are similar to Shane's. I live in California and Lake Tahoe is one of my favorite places to go. If you two are interested, I can share a beautiful and very accessible resort my boyfriend and I stayed at. They even have an accessibility expert on site who uses a wheelchair. It is not all inclusive, but there are a ton of awesome and accessible things to do nearby.

When my hubby and I were on our honeymoon I looked at him and said “ya know who would love this place cause it’s totally accessible for his wheelchair?! Hannah and Shane!” We went to Barcelo Bavaria Punta Cana Dominican Republic. Curb cuts everywhere, walk in shower l, private shower/hot tubs on patios! Also, check out Karisma Resorts. And watch some resort review vlogs. They do really great walk through. I researched for months and poured over a million of those videos to see which once’s worked for us!! Good luck! .

I've had to learn to ignore kids, or ask their parents to come take over. I was using a change room once and like 3 kids were all surrounding me, verbally asking each other "How is she gonna change in a wheelchair?" I disappeared into a very large wheelchair accessible bathroom, that I was grateful they had, and locked the door. When I came out the mom actually got mad "They're just kids, you should answer them". I love kids. I answer their questions all the time. I let them beep the horn on my chair. Getting dressed out of a bathingsuit is NAKED and this mother would not understand the need for privacy. Most people aren't looking and don't care but these kids were looking. I love it when kids ask questions, it teaches them not to be afraid of disability later. However, teach your kids...there's a time and a place for this...

It's mind boggling how we still have to deal with wheelchair accessibility issues in 2020. You'd think they'd have it all figured out by now. Come on business owners, get with the program!!

    • @caryulmer7063
      @caryulmer7063 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Rick McKnight Ikr? Always had to laugh at shopping malls that had stairs with a ramp right beside it. All the able bodied people used the ramp too, it was easier. I don't see why they have the stairs at all, just have one reasonably wide ramp, we can all use it. Same way with sidewalks. Why have curbs & then 1 let down you have to hunt up, only to find some nitwit has parked in front of it blocking it. Just have the roll over curbs, a wheelchair can access them anywhere. There are lots of people who aren't disabled but need those too, such as parents with strollers or seniors.

@@caryulmer7063 Here's another perfect example, in my town, there's this new wheelchair accessible side walk next to a main and busy road that leads to a store I often go to, I was happy to see that they had finally made an accessible walkway there. But as I got to the end of the walkway, there was no exit ramp to get off the sidewalk. So I had to turn around and go all the way back to the starting point only to endanger my life by going onto the busy road just so I could get to that store. So I kept asking myself, why on earth did they even bother making a wheelchair accessible walkway if they're not even gonna put an exit ramp at the end? It would simply be the logical thing to do but unfortunately, they just don't get it or they just don't care.

Hello you two, I was researching wheelchair friendly travel and found a site that really addresses these concerns. It is curbfreewithcorylee.com , he says his favorite beach resort is in St. Simons Island, Georgia since the beach sand is packed hard and he can take his own wheelchair down to the water on the sand. Check out his website, he has traveled all over the world with his wheelchair. He also listed a site called Handiscover which is like a AirB&B for handicapped travelers, they give you a level to put in and only accommodations that a wheelchair like Shanes can go would come up. Good Luck.

I mean I even work at a boutique resort in Arizona and they just added a room where the shower doesnt have a step buuuut to get in the front door there's a step! I never thought about it until now. People don't think about that I guess. I'm definitely going to mention it to my boss that they need to make a room that's COMPLETELY wheel chair accessible.

We've had the same problems as you with people saying things are 'wheelchair accessible' only to find out there are a 'few' steps! I think that they must assume that everyone in a wheelchair can at least get out and stand for a while or something! They say things like, "oh, you can't stand?" You may not be able to go out on your deck if you get a balcony room but they are so small that even if you pull up to the door it will be the same thing since balconies are tiny. It’s easy to check every port so you will know what to expect. Call a travel agent for other places. If you decide on over water bungalows, most of them have private pools which is great!

Can only say how much I liked cruises. Had a partner in wheelchair for 16 years and was great for us, also huge wheelchair accessible cabins. He could only move his eyes and mouth. You normally enter and exit the ship through a gate (arm) like at airports to/from the airplanes. Only in Newport it was with a small boat to the harbour. The one in the Mediterranean was the most beautiful, incl. 2x Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Malta, Sicily (Italy), Spain, Tunisia, Crete, Cyprus etc. in 3 weeks. Another country every morning around 6:00am without packing. Also all inclusive except alcoholic beverages and tips (you get a cheque for giving tips).

Figfromathistle I’m sure when looking to have a stress free and accessible honeymoon, they look up if the place is homophobic? What? Lol. They are a straight couple on top of that so they wouldn’t experience any homophobia. There are many states in the U.S that are considered more homophobic, doesn’t stop people from coming.

Brooke K It strikes me that core principles of this channel include inclusivity, promotion of equal rights, and non-discrimination. By natural extension, whether a state actively denies equal rights to and endorses discrimination against a minority might reasonably be expected to be a potential consideration of the owners of the channel when deciding if they want to indirectly support said state by traveling there. I am neither a Tibetan or a Muslim but have chosen not to travel to China given its active oppression of said groups. So yes, it does have bearing. Similarly, I would also not have chosen to honeymoon in Apartheid South Africa, not because I am black, but rather secondary to the principle of solidarity

    Hi Shane and Hannah,
My husband and I had our honeymoon at one of the Sandals in St. Lucia (grande St. Lucian) in 2018 and it was amazing. I highly recommend. If you have questions about it let me know! If you do end up bringing your parents, have them stay at one of the other two Sandals on the island bc if you stay at a Sandals you can use all of the other restaurants and facilities at the other Sandals during your stay! Plus you’d have privacy. Sandals arranges pick up and drop off to the airport as part of the all inclusive package. They’re pretty good with accessibility and definitely have accessible rooms and ramps and I am sure they have an accessible van for their airport pick ups. Hope this helps and best of luck!

We honeymooned in Jamaica at a Sandals resort. The transportation from the airport to the resort was unbelievable stressful, the drivers are scary there. Also, we paid for waterfront and were placed in a building behind the resort for the first 2 nights. We made the most of our trip, but I would never go back. The pictures of the resort and rooms are original and don't show how run-down the rooms are now. My brother also honeymooned to a diff Sandals resort in Jamaica and had the same feedback. We went on a few excursions and they were a lot of fun, the staff at all levels were amazing. Just wanted to give you honest feedback... not be a huge damper on your vacay dream.

As the mother of a special needs child, I HEAR you when you talk about children staring. It annoys our family to pieces that parents arent more aware of what their children do right in front of them or at the very least, teach them NOT to stare. As for your honeymoon, I thought I would share with you our experience on the Disney cruise ship. My son uses a wheelchair because walking long distances is painful for him. The Disney ships are 100% wheelchair friendly. They have wheelchair cabins ranging from inside cabin all the way to concierge 1 bedroom cabins. Everything onboard is 100% wheelchair friendly and we had NO problems getting on or off the ship in the Bahama's or when they docked at their private island Castaway cay which BTW has an adult only beach with cabana's you can rent. That is by far our favorite place to be on the island. The Disney ships themselves also have adult and Concierge only areas (pool too) to get away from the kiddies. The 3 main dining restaurants onboard are fantastic. They offer spectacular food choices but are also themed with shows. If it werent for the Coronavirus right now, we would be booking a cruise on Disney. BTW TH-cam has a lot of Disney cruise Vlogs and even cabin layout videos. Worth a watch
    More choices for honeymoon destinations:
Smokey Mountains - rent a cabin and see the sites in Pigeon Forge / Gatlinburg
    Grand Canyon
    Mt Rushmore
    Yellowstone Nat'l park (Geysers)
North Pole Alaska is 100% drivable. We spent Christmas 2018 there and loved it. It is located next to Fairbanks Ak.

We flew from Philadelphia to Florida and then got on the cruise ship there. We had a handicapped accessible cabin too. I thoroughly suggest cruises. We did Celebrity cruises. Never had a problem. The cobblestone streets in the Bahamas was a little bit of a problem but not too bad. The Poconos has an adults only resort.

The Pocanoes have resorts called Caesar’s Palace which are semi inclusive and adult only. That’s where we went on our honeymoon. They have rooms that have a Champagne Glass hot tub and your own swimming pool in your hotel room. Plus a ton of things to do on the resort. You should check them out. Not sure about accessibility.
