    Andy and Alex think they give too many high scores, but they need to understand that, for the most part, they are reviewing the best of the best songs of the rock era (mostly 70s and 80s), and there are thousands and thousands more well known songs (and album cuts) for them to review. The grade inflation that they think they have will level off as time goes on.

    • @cdcaleo
      @cdcaleo ปีที่แล้ว +20

      100%. I've noticed they are restraining themselves grade wise recently, but there is no harm in handing out A+'s to outstanding songs like this.

      I also pointed this out a couple of months ago. There definitely were crap songs back in the day. Some of them I even still listen to for nostalgia reasons but I wouldn’t recommend them…unless they were doing a schlock song episode. 😏

    • @taylortyler1867
      @taylortyler1867 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yeah. They're just scratching the surface. It'll take them forever to get to everything great in the 70s & 80s. They haven't done anything by Huey Lewis, Great White and Bryan Adams, just to name a few and only a couple by Journey and they _STILL_ have a shitload of Queen, Steely Dan, the Eagles, Cheap Trick and many more, not to mention the R&B and funk genres like, Kool & the Gang, Sade, the Gap Band and Ohio Players (again, just to name a few).

    This is my generation's music. I came of age in the 70s and I'm SO HAPPY I did. We had the best music. Can you imagine what it's like to be 65 and still rockin' to Led Zeppelin?? Thank you guys so much for playing songs without stopping, then reacting. Help keep classic rock alive forever!! Love you guys so much - you definitely understand music.

      Here's the thing. I never put Steve Miller on. But there are so many catchy tunes of his that come on the radio that I always turn it up and enjoy myself thoroughly. One of those bands that may not have die hard followers but pretty much everybody likes (except music snobs and metalheads). And that's why you hear it so often on robot-run classic rock radio stations. They basically can't go wrong throwing in a couple Steve Miller songs every single day. Like Elton John and The Eagles.

    • @karlschmitt6359
      @karlschmitt6359 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @gregsager2062

      @@edvonblue SMB bassist Lonnie Turner was actually the co-writer of the song. He wrote it with journeyman Bay Area guitarist Greg Douglass. In fact, it's Douglass who ended up playing guitar on the song rather than Miller himself. I'm not sure whether it's Turner or Douglass who thus deserves credit for the song's immortal line, "Everything's better when wet."

    Steve Miller Band was hitting its stride at this time. If I remember correctly, the "Fly Like an Eagle" and "Book of Dreams" albums were recorded at the same time and were originally scheduled for release as a double album until the record company imagined it could make more money with separate releases. In 2018 I got to see him on a double-bill with Peter Framptom... the only thing that changed was that we both got 40 years older. This song always reminds me of going on our pontoon boat at the river!
    Best line:
    The question to everyone's answer
    Is usually asked from within
    But the patterns of the rain
    And the truth they contain
    Have written my life on your skin

    The tone of those Toms is delicious. And those lyrics !! "You probably wouldn't remember, I probably couldn't forget" and "You treat my like I was your Ocean, you swim in my blood when it's warm"
    Steve Miller was having a good time for sure and he is not afraid to experiment but he also has the knack to write catchy tunes.
    "Living In the USA" is an early funky groove from 1968, or "Abracadabra" if you want to hear his hit from the 80's, lol, I like it (I was there) , but it does have some 80's production.

    Part of the official “road-trip play list” for young people everywhere back in the day. Banger indeed. In fact you’d just play Steve Miller Greatest Hits in its entirety.

    One of the things I always loved about this song is Steve is constantly riffing-not just hitting power chords over and over-but throwing cool riffs in between strums. Gives this song a lot of energy and motion. 👍🎸

    These are some of the best rock songs in history... they are A+ - S all day long, and when the pool of great songs starts fading away theres no going back... so please give these classic songs the real grades they deserve & no more nit-picking of a 99% perfect song !

    My younger brother got invited to a Steve Miller concert somewhere around 1990. Afterwards he told me, "I only went because I was invited. I liked Steve Miller OK but never really thought I was a fan. Then the concert started and about a half hour later I realized that I knew all the words to all the songs. I guess I was a fan and didn't know it."

    Swingtown's probably the next step on the Steve Miller journey. One of the coolest sounding drum tracks to me.

    It’s a perfect pop-rock song. High energy with nothing wasted. Fantastic guitar riff, driving bass line, and punchy drums. Plus the actual lyrics, vocal phrasing and treatment on the voice make this another brilliant feature of the song.
    It’s an S.

    The sound effect that begins this song is an example of what dispersion of a wave sounds like. If you run the single "pew" noise through a long enough slinky, the high frequency parts of the sound travel through it faster than the low frequency parts, which causes them to arrive at different times, and you get a dispersed sound that sounds like it's repeating, like an audio version of a light signal sent through a prism.

    So you guys , people around my age of 62 were just alive teens used to this music,,, it was our everyday thing.. we loved but watching the now younger generation appreciate this music so much makes me realize we sort of took it for granted…but what else would we do this was our life….Steve Miller grew up for at least part of his middle school or high school years in my home town Milwaukee.. he was ahead of his time with the papaya..no Whole Foods back then

    One of Steve Miller's best lines--"You treat me like I was your ocean, you swim in blood when it's warm." Got a nice smile from Alex it seems.
    Again, I'll recommend for next time--"Livin in the USA" Yall like harmonica and it has some of the best of that you'll ever want to hear.

    @Andy & Alex -
    Thanks for all the great reviews & reactions over the years!
    Steve Miller was raised in an environment of Rock & Roll royalty. His real life God Parent is the IMMORTAL LES PAUL!!!
    Yes, that Les Paul - The guitar creator extraordinaire!
    I think as you explore SMB music you'll be impressed with his versatility. I highly recommend checking out one of his earliest charting songs "Living in the USA".
    All the best,
    Mo-
