    I've been here a year now in February, all I can say is, if you think you found the best spot in Killeen, go back there at night on a Friday or Saturday and just be real quiet and listen. I herd more gunshots in my first week here than in a year of living in Houston (45th & Wayside other side of the Fiesta). There are pockets in this town that are an absolute gem, and safe if you can find/afford them. Unfortunately, I wound up by Conder Park.

    First stationed at Ft Hood in 1989. KIlleen was known for pawn shops, fast food, and adult videos back then. Definitely not a family friendly area. Stationed back here again after 09/11. The place has grown tremendously, and become more family oriented since then. I think Killeen gets a bad rap for the crime level. It is rough around the edges, but has decent people living here. My wife and I retired here and have no reason to leave, other than the brutal summer heat. Killeen may not be your favorite town, but it's not all that bad either.

    This is going to be a lengthy response. I first got to killeen in Dec 1990 because I was stationed at Fort Hood. I watch killeen grow big time. I got stationed back to killeen again in 2011 because I was PCS'd back to Fort Hood a second time. In 1990. all the business and restaurants on hwy 190 was non existent, Nothing was outside the clear creek gate. Copperas cove, Harker Heights and Killeen were real small then. The Nolanville Police was so bad it made 60 minutes for the abusive speed traps. Killeen only had Killeen HS and one other HS then. Soldiers used to get harrassed hanging out at Lake park on sundays. it got so bad that the III Corp commander had to make activities on post for soldiers because Killeen PD was so bad. the Court house and police station was on 2nd street. Nothing passed WS Young once you crossed over hwy 190 south, ELM road had only a couple of clubs ELM and 195 we only had City lights and a strip club. Nothing was passed that then. and on business 190 and MLK was a club called Motowns, then DJs. so many shootings or fires at that club it was ridiculous. Only car washes was the one across from Mcdonalds on 4th and rancier, 10th street near the post office and on 2nd street. Had to go to Austin, Houston, San Antonio, or DALLAS to have some real fun, I would go to Waco, and temple a lot. Killeen used to have a record store called Renansaince Records next to whataburger on 195 and they even started a drive through burger place called the grid iron. . When I came back in 2011. Talking about a major changes. so many housing developments. killeen is dang near annex all the way to florence now. Still only has that one mall. Killeen Mall. But so many changes its crazy. The best part even to this day is the housing affordability is still one of the best in the country. Fort Hood was one my best duty stations both times i was there. The only draw back for me is the heat. Texas is on fire.

    Okay i have an honest question for you sir. My spouse and I are trying to move to Killeen Texas from the NYC life. I have a clean back ground no criminal record what so ever. But my husband he has a criminal record. He has no one left over here in NYC and is finally reconnecting with his family. Everyone lives over there. that’s why we want to move to killeen. How do I go about getting an apartment? Would it be a good idea for me to apply for an apartment and put my name on the lease. And not include my husband on the lease. Will I get in trouble or kicked out if he is living with me? Because we spoke to his mother and she said that her other family member and her as well both have apartments and they are not aloud to have people stay over more than 3 days if they are not in the lease. They can lose their apartment. She also stated that it’s not fair since if family comes to visit they can’t really stay a week or two weeks for vacation. How to I basically avoid something like this happening to me if I do manage to rent an apartment. And what do I ask if it’s a problem of people come over. To a landlord or the website where people apply for apartments? I don’t know if you understand my questions, for an example would be like many places sometimes one person rents and has their name on the lease and only theirs. Then sometimes if they have a spare room they might rent it to their family member or future roommate and have them pay money to them and they don’t tell landlord or rental place. They just keep on paying the rent like normal. Or if they have a boyfriend or spouse and they are living with them but not included in the lease and they help out with rent. Sorry if I wrote everything confusing, but what do I look for when it comes to people family boyfriend husband or other people who are not in lease living with you. When deciding to apply for apartments? Like his mother told us they specifically told her no visitors staying past 3 days and her family member with her apartment had to sneak her family member around when she came over to visit. Please help me and sorry if I sound confusing.

      Hi, I’m happy to try and help the best I can. I’m not super knowledgeable on leases but I do know that different companies have different requirements. Having a criminal record might not exclude him from qualifying, my thought is, having an open and honest conversation with the property manager about it prior to applying is the best bet. Here in Killeen the rental companies don’t put their listings on one central website so you have to visit their individual website, also looking on places like Facebook marketplace for private owners who are looking for tenants is also a good idea. I would not seek to be deceptive on the lease bc you don’t want to jeopardize your place of residence. Some good companies I trust are Starpointe, Lonestar realty, Blessed Properties and Segal properties. Visit their websites and call and build relationships with the property managers. Tell them your situation and ask about their rules. It may not be as bad as you’re anticipating. I’m wishing you the best of luck. Please email me if I can be of more assistance!

    I have to be honest about this place. The food and culture is spot on. Amazing. The various places I have lived in and witnessed for the past ten years is not affordable to keep a family. 200k unfortunately will not make you hear fewer gunshots. I don't mean to crush your hustle but you may be out of the loop especially as far as infrastructure. There is a boil water notice at least once a week. There is a shooting at LEAST once a week. You can forget about gardening outdoors during the summer. You can forget about doing anything outdoors during the summer. Unless of course you can afford to strain the water and power supply. Sometimes you get lucky and find a quiet neighborhood but the cost to try to actually live here is not to be desired. Too many house flippers trying to make bank because it is a military town and do not care. If you're seriously considering buying anywhere check the local news.

      So not true. It depends where in Killeen you are. We lived in Heights 16 years and recently moved to a subdivision in Killeen. The builder is not 'big box' so his homes are unique. We have one of the most unique homes and backyard. All this builders homes have something unique about them. When we first moved to Heights it was more like a farm town ... then all the big stores came and ruined everything. Lots of people moved from Killeen to Heights. People started renting out their Heights homes and thats when we started to see changes (for the worse). We got out of Heights and found a hidden gem subdivision in Killeen. Close to everything and not many know about this subdivision. Love it. Might stay here 5-10 years then move but for now ... this side of Killeen is 10 out of 10.

    I am about to retire from the military and I would love to move to Killeen TX my problem... My wife is literally allergic to roaches (I'm serious) I do not want to move back to Alaska. I was told that TX is known for roaches everywhere (I am aware that roaches are all over the U.S.) but I was told that it is hard to be rid of them in TX even if you have an exterminator come out monthly. Can you suggest a safe, clean neighborhood please.

    • @realestatesteph
      @realestatesteph  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So honestly I’ve never had a client with a roach problem, at least one that told me about it! I don’t think the neighborhood is the issue, it’s the cleanliness of the occupants. You can tell the people that take care of their homes and who doesn’t. Also if we find a great house we can get a pest inspection done to ensure there are no roaches before you ever move in!
