  • MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!! A special gift for you this Christmas Eve!.. This video is something of a spinoff and/or sequel to the [HOW RAILROADS WORK Episode 4 - The Buffalo Line] Video..
We pick up where we left off at Renovo to see what's left of the once massive PRR shop operations there.. With a new power plant looming in the not-too-distant future, the days may be numbered for what's left of this historic property..
We'll follow a loaded coal train off of the RJ Corman at Keating sporting (2) new AC44C6Ms including #4004 in the Altoona applied special black and gray paint scheme.
And speaking of fancy paint schemes.. From there it's onto Lock Haven, Avis and Newberry Yard in Williamsport to catch some North Shore and SEDA-COG rail action featuring 4 of the 6 North Shore Railroad's Heritage schemes..
    Juniata Valley
    Lycoming Valley
    North Shore
    Nittany & Bald Eagle
PLUS Switching at High Steel Structures and a Lycoming Valley interchange move to the NS at Northumberland Yard which will make up future Trains 11A..
CORRECTION: On the last song the artist and song title are wrong.. It should be:
Loch Lomond - The String Instrumental (Starfrosch.com)
Kevin MacLeod - Fireflies and Stardust (Starfrosch.com)
    Other music by Bensound.com
Sorry for the slip-up but what can I say.. I had to have this present gift-wrapped for you so that you could enjoy it on Christmas Day!... Didn't have time to proof-read everything
    TRAINS SHOWN IN THIS VIDEO:
    1. RJ Corman
    2. NS 632
    3. Various trains around Lock Haven and Williamsport.
SIZE DOES MATTER.. So Watch it in HD!!

Fantastic video Trains21. Lots of great stuff to see. Great catch with NS 4004 and the other AC446M! I managed to see 4002 and 4004 together in NJ when they were sent here on their first assignment after being released into active service. Love the scenes around Lock Haven yard too, those CR boxcars and that Juniata Valley switcher, pretty cool that it's got the PRR Keystone on the front.
I have to say that while the entire video is awesome, I think my favorite parts are the Nittany & Bald Eagle unit switching High Steel Structures, and Newberry Yard. Awesome PRR coaches at 31:44, and I LOVE the paint schemes on Lycoming Valley engines 2011 and 2017...doesn't get much better than that.
Again, fantastic video. I apologize for not commenting lately, been pretty busy...looks like I have some catching up to do :-)

    • @Trains21
      @Trains21  7 ปีที่แล้ว

No worries.. Work and/or school must sometimes intrude.. But I thank you for such a thorough and informative comment.. Yeah, I saw that you caught the 2002 and 2004 in your goodbye 2016 video.. A dirty little secret, I had NO IDEA that the 4004 was there.. I stumbled on to it!
That Juniata Valley switcher is an ex-Pittsburgh and Shawmut and I liked the NBER too.. The Williamsport SEDA-COG area is awesome for railfanning, especially in the summer.. If you haven't been out there yet, make it a point to do so..
Also, nice as the Pennsy coaches were, they blocked the view of a new (used) LVRR SD40-2 in blue and yellow.. The only way to get a shot was to trespass so I took the loss that trip.

Excellent video. I enjoyed the visit to North Central, PA and the information on railroading in that area. I've never been to Renovo, but I have been to Lock Haven and Williamsport although not recently. I'm glad to see there is still some industry up in that area. Lastly I enjoyed the Christmas decorations at the end, those folks did a great job of decorating.

    • @Trains21
      @Trains21  7 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks Bill.. Actually, there's quite a bit of industry in the Williamsport/Lock Haven/Avis/Northumberland area.. So much, that NS runs a pair of dedicated trains (10A & 11A) there 5 or 6 days a week to service the region.. Christmas decor on Summer Street is a long time tradition.. So much so that parking on the street is not allowed during the season when the lights are up..

no more 10/11a for a few yr, h53 gets the cars from Enola for all the NSHR rr's that are near Northumberlnad (Norry).
20:58 theres also Stainman in the middle of the yard that cuts up steel rails to put in the cars. i rem the guy we talked to when i worked at LVRR his nick name was booger. so we called them booger cars.
26:55 CP River/CP Linden/CP South Linden all at each end the the Y.
around 31:00 all the passenger cars are in norry along pa 147 right at the borough line in the nshr yard area i think. 32:41 the tiny Newberry RDG station was to your left in the lot with the concrete blocks.
they closed Depot St xing and now a NO horn ordinance is in place. all cuz 1 a hole complained the crews blew their horn too much everytime they were switching tracks at howard st xing.
34:21 outbound LVR1 is no more. NS wanted too much for LVRR/NSHR to use their tracks from Muncy-Norry n back. So h45 comes up from Norry in the late afternoon brings cars for LVRR n drops them off at the siding at S Linden for the LVRR guys the next morn to get. the outbound cars from LVRR to NS are at CP Muncy. what an interesting way to move cars in and out of newberry from ns trains.
very nice ending with Candy Cane Lane! Its a staple in the community.

7:51 answer to your question? 4; 2 in front and 2 DPU at the rear. BNSF/NS joint trains to South Georgia routinely have around 136 loads and they use that set-up [although I have seen 2 and 1]

Great video! Nice to see some railfanning in this part of the state. I'm over in Mill Hall and I've caught a few trains going into Lock Haven but I haven't had much time to sit along the tracks for hours with my camera and tripod. The 130-car coal trains originate in Clymer (Indiana County). Their loads are readily identifiable since the cars are loaded using front-end loaders, resulting in uneven load tops. NS delivers a 130-car string of empties to RJCP at Keating, and RJCP takes them to Clearfield. From there they are run as 65-car trains over a two-day spread from Clearfield to Clymer and return. Once the 130 loads are back in Clearfield it's off to Keating for a run down to Baltimore and export overseas.
Why two 65-car trains to and from Clymer? Well, the 14-degree curve at Cherry Tree can't handle much more than 65 loaded cars coming down the hill from Fleming Summit (it's only a 0.8% grade, but apparently that's enough). Too much weight pushing the cars down the hill onto the curve puts too much stress on the outer rail of the curve.
