Fascinating… Being able to see your goals just out of reach but at the same time knowing you can reach them eventually invokes such a special feeling. The way the game visualizes things for the player is truly artful. Thank you for making this! I’m sure those who grew up playing this game will feel something just watching this.

I really love the misty and ethereal feel this game exudes and the lack of combat in this commentary really amplifies it. Love it!

I’ve felt that the world of Lks felt liminal wayyy before I even knew what liminal spaces were. Maybe you’re more aware of liminality when you’re younger…
(Edit): I think what helps the vibes that the game gives off is the fuzziness and the oil paint style of the game really help elevate the liminality

4:54 I myself haven't played LKS, but from what I can see, I actually think the signs of life and activity are the REASON it can feel so lonely. A blank room is a blank room, there is nothing to experience. But as you say, the water slowly moves across the screen, the wind blows through the tree and the flowers, a small patch of land let's you look off into the horizon. And there you stand. There is so much movement, so much going on, and YOU are the only one who sees it. With the areas collectibles gone, with the reason to be there completed, the area is left, alive, but passive. I think it's THAT feeling, the aura of existence without purpose, of experience without anyone to share in with, of lands with nothing but the past to remember, that really fit with that bizarre feeling we call "Liminal"
On a less Sombre note: Haha funny walk cycle go: Waddle Waddle

I always wished you could expand your kingdom those places. It would have been so cool to see your kingdom and subjects in the back part of dark valley, or the entrance, or even the big area in forest café where the beetle is originally found. The beetle could have been a guardian. The same goes for the rest of the places, I always wanted Alpoko to expand more. Gosh, LKS brings back so many memories. I lent my copy of LKS to a friend so he could play it, and am currently replaying it on steam deck (dolphin not steam).

I wish so too. The lore reason is that those places become nature reserved and places for sightseeing and such. It seems they actually wanted to implement idle citizens going to the locations on little trips, but I assume it was scrapped due to that messing with the hiring mechanic only working within the Alpoko borders
There’s still some remnants of it though. Sometimes citizens will visit the egg

Yasuhiro Wada was one of the main developers behind this game, as well as the creator of the Harvest Moon series. There are several games in that series which have some strange, lonely settings a lot like what you've described here, particularly A Wonderful Life. I wonder if the liminal vibe in LKS was partially due to his involvement.

Good stuff! Really enjoyed watching this video, it was oddly cozy. I think this video perfectly summarizes why I love LKS so much. Even after playing through the game for about 30 times, I still find new details about the world in every playthrough. The realization that there's nothing left after you've conquered everything is honestly kind of scary and I think that feeling is what the devs have been trying to go for. I remember being genuinely scared when walking near the coastline at night when I first played as a child. The fact that "dead" citizen get washed ashore doesn't make it any better. Really makes you wonder whats beyond all the water. Also one odd thing I absolutely adore about LKS are moments like these 13:53. Sure it's just some fish but I just genuinely appreciate every detail I can find. The fact that actual living people have made this masterpiece of a game makes me really emotional. Videogames are a form of art and LKS really made me realize that.
    Thanks for this video dweight

Gosh, I’m so glad to hear this. I had some confidence in this weird concept for an unscripted video going in, but while making it I started to think “do I sound crazy? Does what I’m saying make sense? Will anyone else relate?” And seeing that this game gave people the exact same feeling I had is magical. Isn’t it amazing how we can all bond over our experiences exploring the same place?

I'll never get why this game isn't more popular. It's not only one of my favorite Wii games, but also one of my favorite games of all time. Not to mention that it takes the gameplay style of Pikmin and uses it in a really unique and transformative way, creating an identity all its own. It's a shame really.

Great video. I dont think I've ever heard the way LKS's world can make you feel so perfectly before. Especially with the post-revist, the weird feeling of being "done" with exploring the world and reaching its edges.

you were right, this is such a cool way to build a game! I would've loved the opportunity to explore a world like that as a kid, but in lieu of that, it's cool to be able to experience it through your vids :]
also, did i see that someone who worked on this also worked on harvest moon? bc that game *was* a huge influence on my childhood, and this feels kinda cozy in a similar way. I know I've said this but i do have to check out LKS, lol

I can tell you that I LOVED exploring this world as a kid, and I am sure that there’s still a lot of magic left for a grown up :))
And yes, Yasahiro Wada worked on this game! The rest of the team kept including random references to the Harvest Moon series in the project to wind him up when he found them 😂

Man, this video made me wish (well, more than I already do lol) the world of the game was bigger, because I freaking love how it's structured. Seeing and recognizing almost all of it was very satisfying, but damn, I never really realized how interconnected everything truly was... no stone left unturned, really.
I wish this game had a modding community, I'd love to see what people could create by either adding to the world or creating a new one altogether ahah. Maybe one day...

    • @DeadweightLKS
      @DeadweightLKS  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hey, glad to hear this. I actually feel like the world is big enough. It feels massive first time through. But… I wouldn’t complain for more. Heck, my most common recurring dream is exploring a new area in LKS.
The modding scene has started in this last year. Obviously it’s small as it requires smart boffins who are dedicated enough to this tiny game, but a couple months back wr had our first ever simple ROMhack patch that was compatible with Wii and PC! I know currently there’s work on looking into a randomiser

@@DeadweightLKS Oh, don't get me wrong, the world is perfectly sized for the game it ended up being and the content present within. As a game, it feels complete as is, which is something I very much respect., It's just that LKS is one of the veeery rare instances where I wish the game would not end. There's just something about it that makes it so memorable, fun and relaxing to play. I guess the liminal nature of the world contributes to it.
Yooo it's very nice to know that while small and at its beginning, things are cooking up in the way of modding. I'll keep an eye out for it!

@@valofthenorth475 I completely agree with this. I would only want a sequel for more of this world design. Heck, I just want more *games* to have worlds be designed like this one!
