      By the way, giving an owl a piece of chicken may sound like cannibalism- a bird eating another bird- but remember, owls are birds of prey (carnivorous birds), so that’s entirely normal.

    An injured Blue Heron landed in our yard and I called several places and was finally told to bring him to the Raptor center 40 miles away. When we got there we were only then told the truth which was he would be euthanized as soon as we left. I was so mad that I was told on the phone he would be helped which was a lie. We brought the huge bird back home and put him in our horse trailer, then everyday we went to the local Bait store and bought any dead or dying fish that he ate without hesitation. After many calls I found a woman that had friends that could try to rehabilitate the Heron. After 3 weeks of doing all the work of caring for this bird, he was on a Helicopter leaving Alabama and on his way to a forever home in South Carolina.The work required for that one bird really makes me admire you that much more. Wishing you a Happy Birthday for all the hard work you do for these amazing birds, you and your wife are great people and really appreciated. God Bless you both !!!!

      True stuff. The handful of times I’ve reached out to a wildlife rehabber I was told every time they didn’t have space, enuf help, or some other reason why they couldn’t help. They either passed the buck and I’d keep getting the same answer or they said it would have to be euthanized. Saddest part is in my state you have to jump thru hoops to be a volunteer rehabber which makes no sense. While I’d be more than happy to take a couple classes and put some hours in at a center to get certified, I’ve already been all the way thru graduate school to be a nurse practitioner so I’m not going back to college for it. They need free help that bad they need to make it doable.

    Owls are so intelligent, at least they know from observation that a human can help, where most birds of prey completely avoid humans unless it is a life threatening situation, then they might allow human intervention, but even that is uncommon. Owls just seem to know we are good for something at least, so I gotta thank You for helping this beautiful owl, I just hope it remains happy thru rehab and can return to the wild successfully & hopefully.

    Just fyi... owls swallow their prey whole...Fur, bones and all. This is used for digestion. The fur and bones then get horked up in what's called a pellet. Feeding an owl just a tiny amount of chicken most likely wouldn't hurt a great horned owl but just thought you might want to know. The person you spoke with that said to put in a bowl of water probably didn't know that owls don't really drink like that either.. still taking this owl in and keeping it from other predators till someone knowledgeable arrived was very kind. I really hope things worked out for the owl and it was able to be released again.

      @KaySan666 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      yeah it was very nice of her to do that, i just wished that she hadn't added so much stress to the birds by simply deciding petting and "Loving on it" was the best course of action for an injured wild animal

    • @bshinjp
      @bshinjp 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      When owls are sick you can feed raw meat (No pork) as is without furs and bones. It doesn't matter. They can go on this diet for months until they recover. The bird is sick, you don't know what's wrong with it, so it's not recommended to feed it anything complicated. It's much easier to digest raw meat during this phase.
      What she did was fine. The drop of water and emergency meat could very well kept him up and running until the rescuer came. To be honest the bird needs a proper raptor/avian vet for meds. That's priority one.

    • @Rroff2
      @Rroff2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yeah - first 24 hours a small amount of water via syringe like she was doing with a electrolyte solution (even just a small amount of sugar and salt dissolved in water) is probably all they need in this kind of condition - if they are hungry/starving enough they will take raw meat if offered - won't need to force it on them.

      @@KaySan666 I have saved many wild birds and some do not like touching at all and some actually do like it. If they like it you are not stressing them out. When you rescue a bird they don't want you to handle it mainly because they want to keep if wild. If they can't keep it wild they have to euthanize the bird. It's a horrible outdated law.

    • @onlylonly888
      @onlylonly888 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I am not sure about owl, but for other predators bird like eagle. They do not like human touching them at all. If you try to, they will fight very aggressively. Their talon are are extremely strong and sharp. You pretty much have to grab hold of their leg and cover their head to keep them calm.
      If they ever sit still, calm and let you handle them. It actually is NOT a good sign. Their are either critically ill or exhausted.

    I lived in a small town in SW Washington state some years back. We had heat reflecting window tint on our bedroom window, and it created an almost mirror like reflection. We came home to a juvenile redtail hawk laying on the ground below our window flapping and generally looking hurt. Pretty quick we saw where he'd hit the window and knocked himself loopy. We called the local wildlife rescue line attached to our animal shelter. They said something similar... "put it in a box with some water, and we'll come get it Monday. I'm off for the weekend." It didn't sound like a real good idea to me, crating up an injured wild bird of prey for two days with just water, but we did as we were told. The next day, it was noticeably weaker, so we called again... "No, it will be fine. Leave me alone. I'm at home with my family." The next day, Sunday, we got up that morning and it was dead.
    I WAS LIVID!!!! By the time I finished with her and her useless drones she'd been pulled from her job and reassigned to something more suitable to her lack of give-a-damn, one of her drones was fired, one was written up on a handful of infractions, and her partner was promoted to her position. The partner (work, not domestic) came out and spent an hour talking with us, apologizing and explaining how she was hindered from responding by a direct order not to come get the hawk on a weekend, etc etc. I'd even offered to bring it to them. I am absolutely certain that animal could have been saved with prompt medical attention, but too often the general public is written off as stupid and uninformed on what constitutes an injured raptor. I'm sorry... it's not hard to get an idea what's wrong is serious when this poor creature has a bloodshot eye, bloody nose, and can't hold its head or itself up straight. Gee... that looks an awful lot like my fiance did when she got hit by a pickup on her mountain bike... I mean how hard is it to recognize a concussion?
    I tore raw bloody strips off that entire animal shelter/wildlife rescue facility staff until I'd finally chewed far enough up the food chain to get someone who could... and would... do something to keep this from happening again.

      From a realistic point, we can see that the owl is weak and probably has a broken wing. After the rehabilitation center she is probably good to go back into nature. Saying that she destined to die is pretty unrealistic und pessimistic. Owls, just like any other animal, are able to heal. A broken wing and recovery shouldn't end an owls life. Also, I know that the owl looks pretty sick but all animals do if there is something wrong with them. Don't forget that a broken wing must be painful too.
      Owls can also get pretty old, especially in comparison with pets like cats and dogs. The owl is more likely to be alive than dead.
      I actually don't know who is the "idealistic fool".

    Aww they remind me of the animals we'd take care of as I grew up. Started out just a blue jay caged safely in my room now and again but over time I had a few visitors like woodpeckers, a bat we named Simon, and once even a very aggressive but badly injured fully-grown hawk. She never did get too friendly but it must have been a traumatic experience being injured in an unfamiliar, even if providing, environment as a very large bird of prey. She ended up making a full recovery at least.

    I had a Golden Eagle rescue video that was in my TH-cam Recommendations list which peaked my interest to watch initially just because of the sheer size of this full grown Female .
    That took me down the Raptor Rabbit hole the last week or two. I came across this wildlife rescue called
    "The Enoch Wildlife Rescue" out of Utah which is run by a Gentleman (Martin I think is his name) & his Wife I think to a lesser extent.
    If you ever want to learn about Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles, Grey Horned Owl, Turkey Vultures, Peregrine Falcons behavior specifically when sick, injured, poisoned vs Healthy vs recovered & Healthy then this is ur guy...
    He does not needlessly interact with any of the rescues with the exception of feeding health check ups to prevent potential Habitualization but he is exceptionally attentive when he has to feed them and give them health checks....
    Something else I found fascinating and unique,
    This guy is also a Falconer.He has a Golden Eagle & a Peregrine Falcon which he will use as one method to feed the other sick and injured in his care..He also obviously buys the farmed mice and stuff but when he has full grown Eagles baby mice don't suffice...Anyways I just thought I would share the info for people to check out...

    Very nice job. Thanks for caring for him, and for making/posting the video. I'm surprised to notice of the several predatory bird rescues I've seen videos of, owls and eagles, the birds have made no effort to bite their rescuers. I'd still take every precaution, as those beaks are perfectly designed for tearing flesh. And the talons. But the birds seem intelligent enough to know when they're being helped.
