I know some bands of the nu-metal era have been shat on this past ten years as well as the whole nu-metal genre but man, this was a very exciting time to be a teenager and to discover metal music.
I saw Taproot opening for Chevelle in San Diego...who knows when. I had a brief conversation with Stephen after the show - he and I were heading the same direction down the street, me to my car and him probably to get some food, and he commented on my Jerry Cantrell shirt. 🤘
I’ve been listening Taproot since they started and have seen them live 6 times. Very underrated band in my opinion. Thanks for doing this one! If you dig the production check out Sevendust - Home (album) produced by the same guy, Toby Wright. That album will kick you right in the face. Just insane sound production. Denial and Home are fantastic Sevendust songs, love them. Licking Cream was the song that really got me hooked though, I reckon Geebz would love to have a listen to Licking Cream
I went down a Taproot rabbit hole this morning and Blue Sky Research hit me the same way Radiohead’s Kid A did when I first heard it. In particular “Facepeeler” - holy crap.

Layne Staley was supposed to sing on a track on this album and was friends with Taproot. Apparently the 'Welcome' album was in his CD player when he passed away in 2002.
My group of friends and I performed this in our high school talent show. I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed the day of our “show” and was pretty heavily medicated. Our singer was super nervous and started drinking straight honey right before we went on because someone told him mixing some in water would help sooth his throat. I had never played guitar and sang before simultaneously but somehow made it happen due to the adrenaline. oh wow....I see Taproot and I am instantly transported back to my HS parking lot, chillin in my car after school absolutely shredding my shitty speaker system...Taproot was in heavy rotation in those days. This will be a trip!
As others mentioned, Taproot was never a band that really broke through but this song did gain some traction before they went back to obscure. They really changed their sound from albums like Gift and their ep Thiftwhore to this album and beyond. They have another great song on their later albums on Our Long Road Home - Wherever I Stand. Aside from that the whole Gift album is pretty great. Dragged Down, Emotional Times and Again and Again are bangers
Agreed; Taproot had very decent commercial success with this particular song. It would make regular rotations on Radio (yes, people listened to the radio for new music) and their tour did sell a bunch of tickets to for some big name bands (at the time). It was a weird time; I'd say their music was more geared toward the middle-school/high-school crowds in their first 2 albums. Gift was certainly an album that Stephen Richards says was just them trying to be/sound cool. As unpopular as it could sound; my favorite work of theirs is Blue Sky Research. I know Billy Corgan helped with some of the direction of that album, but for the most part; its a huge step forward for them as a band that I felt they were creating these beautiful sounds and melodies instead of just trying to get me to break windows and smash walls in wild mosh pits.
Definitely was never expecting to see someone react to Taproot lol Brought me back to my High school days listening to them and a bunch of other bands like Spineshank,Element Eighty,Static-X,Chevelle,Trust Company,Reveille...I could go on and on. Thanks for the great analysis and giving me a good old nostalgia kick. Much love! 🖤
LOL. Reveille is just comical to me now. Loved it back then, but man their lyrics and vocals are just crap. Also, Spineshank definitely had some really hooky tunes.
Man! Did someone request this song or did you find it on your own. I remember when this song came out. At the time it was the greatest thing I'd ever heard. The album this song was on was all around good then I dont remember ever hearing from this band again. After all these years I still knew every single word
Not sure if it's my doing, but I've mentioned taproot on here a few times recently. Even though they weren't huge, they deserved to be. I hear their influence in quite a bit of more recent records. Their jazz influences come through in their groove so hard.
When I first found this song, I just remember thinking to myself. Wow... An artist that actually understands... The lyrics in this song are phenomenally powerful, and it is truly a masterpiece. 👩🎨

Fantastic to see this pop up here! Haven't heard anything from Taproot in years and years, but I still put them on my ipod each time I run through the bands I have a few songs of. Love _Art,_ and _Dreams_ from them, too. Been seeing a few people shout out Chevelle again in the comments; I would love to see you get to something from _La Gargola,_ but something other than _Take Out the Gunman._ It's a great single, but others on there like _An Island,_ _Jawbreaker,_ and _One Ocean_ are killer tracks, and really show off Chevelle's style. * I mean, really, just listen to _An Island_ anyone who hasn't. It's such a pounding riff and keeps you tied down with how heavy it is. I always head bang to this one.

Oh man I was so excited when I read the title. I loved Taproot when I was in high school. Honestly, I still do. Usually two or three times per year I go through their discography, with their first two albums being my favorite. I know Poem and Calling were pretty big radio hits but I think they were a really underrated band. Other popular bands at the time were Trapt and Hoobastank and while they are decent too, Taproot is so good (a bit darker which I like)
Taproot hoodie was my jam when I was in my Junior year in High School. Lyrics from "Mirror's Reflection" on the back, still have it up in the closet next to my Deftones windbreaker some 20+ years later 😁
I've been a subscriber for awhile now and love the way you break these songs down to expose their bones and sinew. This video is one of your best reviews in my opinion. Doesn't hurt that it's an absolute banger of a song. ;) Keep up the good work, Decomposer!
This song came out when I was in highschool, it's not one that I heard a lot, so I never really got into following Taproot, but it's such a great song and such a hook bomb that it sounds both fresh and nostalgic every time I hear it. And one of my favorite parts is the way he switches from clean singing to the growl and back.
Wow, I'd nearly forgotten about this song. Yeah, it's definitely one of those songs that uses those easy hooks to pull you in. I still enjoy it, but this song to me has remained a "Happy Meal" in context of the Era that I enjoyed it, where my tastes have now grown to enjoying a proper grilled cheese burger with all the toppings on it.
I think the first time I heard this song I was nine or ten and my older brother was showing it to my mother. A few years later I learned how to play it on guitar.
A+! I thought I could tear a song up a bit after first watching your "46 & 2" video. I was wrong of course. I've heard and used to sing in a band "46 & 2" about a million times combined so that made sense. I used to love this particular track in my early 20's but that's about as far as it went. The throw away, one hit wonder types. You tore it open though and I had no clue. Your face read pop garbage most of the time but you found appreciation in the song anyway. Kudos sir! Subscribed!
I just found you but you have great reactions, found you through the Disturbed one and I went way down memory lane reading your comments on this one. I really did not think I'd see a Taproot reaction but I appreciate you doing this, new subscriber for sure.
When I was just out of high school, and waiting to join the navy, this song came out and it blew me away. The two things that really connected with me about it was that at the time, (in retrospect) my bipolar was starting to manifest and I had no clue what was going on. It caused a really deep emotional turmoil. The other thing was that I had started writing poetry to try and process the pain I felt (I still write). So it was an extremely validating feeling. It was a song about my specific situation it felt like. I still have a very deep appreciation for the song.
Holy crap this track is 20 years old. Suddenly I have the urge to buy a ball chain necklace and a pair of Airwalks😂
Not to mention a stussy sweatshirt. Or that might just me.

Airwalks!!! 🤣🤣🥳

@@theparadisesnare haha nice! I'd also say the band Flaw is up there with them in the "least talked about" category from that generation. Taproot and Flaw along with a few other bands were my introduction into heavier rock/metal. Pure nostalgia when I hear them haha
Wow. Throwback! Thank you for your work and time sir
Dammit Geebz...I've heard many of the songs you have reacted to hundreds of times, but never the same way after watching your reactions. It's a good thing! Thanks Man!!
Maybe it's the nostalgia talking but I haven't heard this song since its radio circulation days and it still holds up - still slaps. Good for them. Good for you. Good for us!
I loved Taproot 'I' for the lyrics. Such a great self esteem and gym song.
Oh man I was so excited when I read the title. I loved Taproot when I was in high school. Honestly, I still do. Usually two or three times per year I go through their discography, with their first two albums being my favorite. I know Poem and Calling were pretty big radio hits but I think they were a really underrated band. Other popular bands at the time were Trapt and Hoobastank and while they are decent too, Taproot is so good (a bit darker which I like)
Yea it was badass in the later 90s, definitely awesome and he really only uses that distortion really on one or two words and I really dig that.
Taproot hoodie was my jam when I was in my Junior year in High School. Lyrics from "Mirror's Reflection" on the back, still have it up in the closet next to my Deftones windbreaker some 20+ years later 😁
Speaking on behalf of guitar players everywhere, this song is an anthem.

I love that you did Taproot!!!
More Taproot? Literally any song off of Blue Sky Research. The entire album is a gem.
One of my favorite 1 hit wonders.
Whoa!!!! Taking me back!!!!
I knew these guys before they were signed. Haven't heard about them in forever.
I'm pretty sure they played my local YMCA.
@@MaynardsSpaceship There's actually footage uploaded of them playing at a YCMA. At Port Huron, right? You should check it out for memories \m/
Just Discovered You, And Like You're Reaction For This Song. Taproot Is One Of My All Time Favorite Bands That Is In My Top 10.
Absolutely love this song!
