Hi there. I've only ever been to the US once (i am from Denmark). We were in CA, NV and AZ. This will sound crazy, but the thing that made the biggest impression on me, was taking a break in Baker (we even ate at the Mad Greek, which was at the very start of this video). Getting out in this "truck stop town, in the scorching heat, amidst this VERY beautiful, desolate nature, this was the america i wanted to experience. And i actually did wonder what was up the road you took, since we were going to Las Vegas. So thanks for filming this. All the best, Kim.
When you get down to it, California is absolutely at the top of the list for topographic firsts, from the tallest mountain in the lower 48 to the lowest place on earth, it has the largest trees to the tallest, and one of the longest shorelines. Great. great video.
It can get really hot here in Minnesota, but, we always say, "it is not the heat, it is the humidity" when you get a combination of both, and, the dewpoint goes up so high that your sweating no longer does much good to cool you off, it can get miserable. I always loved the desert, did not mind the dry heat nearly as much as what we get here in the humid midwest.
I’m a non-driver living in Sydney, Oz, so this is great viewing. I’ve only just discovered your channel so I’ll start watching from way back when. Thanks for sharing. 🐨🇦🇺
I too live in Sydney and as we can't travel love watching these videos . We drove all around the USA back in the 1970's so these drives bring back great memories .
I used to watch loads of Shotguns Videos an a few other truckers but then I got caught up in those utube chatrooms Christ if u Neva been in them don’t bother Everyone’s fake loads of clones an all stressed out Thing is urs addictive haha
Thanks Michael for the ride along and great to see some ole highways that I've traveled on. It's funny that you mentioned about that hand written sign concerning pulling up after fueling and the reason why I said it was funny, just a few days back or a week back, my company that I work in safety had received a phone call from a truck stop about a driver that got fuel and went on his 30 minute break and refused to remove the truck until his break was over, it was a busy time for the truck stop, many of trucks waiting for opened fuel islands. Anyway, I will not share what company I work for other than it is not SWIFT, but the fleet manager and dispatcher of this driver was not happy with the drivers attitude. Yesterday morning, I had a meeting in my office with that driver. I tried to be nice to the driver and his attitude was like, "Hey man, I'm the driver and I'm in charge of that truck, not my dispatcher, not my fleet manager and damn sure not you!" Well, after hearing that B.S., I got an attitude and told the driver how things were, told him that he was totally in the wrong for fueling that truck and not logging in his log book, but showing that he went on a 30 minute break. The more I tried to talk with him without getting mad was getting hard and then I told him that he was fired and clean out his truck and get off the property! That is one of the biggest problems with these guys/gals going to truck driving schools; the school doesn't take to teach the students all the rules and regulations of the road. So many of the students come out of driving schools, thinking they are big bad professional truck drivers and those type of drivers, I have a very short fuse with. I do not claim to know everything, but when it comes to trucking and operating trucks safely, I have 25 years of OTR and 11 years in the safety department, so I better know something by now. Anyway, thanks for the ride along and allowing us to ride shotgun on this trip. Be safe and looking for the next video! Peace, brother!
Baker ... home of the "Mad Greek" restaurant and the world's biggest thermometer -- been there -- on a geology field trip in the mid-1990's -- spent the night in Zzyzx -- which is now owned by the Calif State University system for a place to stay for geology students and researchers. I have had the opportunity during my life time to wander all over most of the western United States (had a CB in the car at the time) and some of the North Eastern US. Not doing much traveling these days because of the virus and (unfortunate) shutdowns of everything, so your videos of your travels .... with comments (and no loud music) are the very very best -- especially your descriptions of technics you use for the many different driving situations you encounter -- especially the snowstorm in Colorado!!.
This is another great RIDING SHOTGUN trip. We have taken this drive many times. Badwater is in Death Valley and the lowest elevation in the USA. Bad water visits best in the winter months due to the heat in summer. Enjoying the ride as usual. Had some friends visit from Texas, did not like Death Valley or the surrounding area.
Mtn Man Mike- this is the road to death valley. I once went along here to Shoshone, NV & then down into there. This is the Hot, lower Mojave Desert. Gets above 110℉ 4 or more months per year! Nice ride this evening! Thks for shotgun ride!
I believe it was Baker my first husband and I stopped at on our way home from a trip to MN and down through TX. We gambled with what money we had left, hoping for more to afford the gas going home. Of course we lost. We made it to Baker I think it was, and filled up our tank even though the gas station said "No checks or credit cards...cash only". They didn't accept my check and wanted to confiscate something of equal value, until they called the police. I told him my family was law enforcement and my check was good. He took me down to the store so I could cash it. That was so nice of him. I made it to my sister's which was half way to my house, and was able to draw out more money.
Thanks for talking about what's going on in California with the crazys running it. I look forward to riding and listening to you. Your very lucky to have a job that you can see this great country.
I did this drive late at night with a friend (but opposite direction from Nevada). Never realized how desolate, yet beautiful this route is, until now.
a triple-digit highway.....yup....we made good time on the old roads.....in summer though top speed was usually around 75-80 mph unless you wished to overheat.....some guys had different pulleys so the fan spun faster and some put extra electric fan on radiators (lots of extra fans out there.....all the law enforcement units used to have extra fans).....if you were set up right you could still pour the fuel to the pump.....but I always worried about my tires in that heat at high speed..... running nighttime was better except watch out for animals
I 'm an OG. It is hard to believe how quiet the trucks are now days. Automatic everything. I have never had to used a computer or GPS. Funny to say I have never driven a truck with A/C or an automatic trans. Now every video I see, every truck almost has an automatic. I would fall asleep in your truck with that nice tire hum and cool air. Wow! I enjoyed cruising with ya buddy. Take care. Regards from Ody Slim
We went to Death Valley,Badwater Basin it’s the lowest point in the U.S.A.282feet below sea level. It was 115.degrees in the shade .One of the highest temps in the world was recorded there about 137 degrees.
Death Valley may be the hottest place in the USA, but, a few miles from where i live in North East Minnesota, we have a town with some of the lowest temps ever recorded. It is not uncommon to have temps in the 30 below to 50 below range . At that temp, things start to do crazy things. You can throw a cup of hot water in the air, and, it instantly turns to ice crystals. Where i live closer to Lake Superior, it is warmer, but, i have climbed into my Silverado parked outside at thirty below, the seats feel like cement, but, my truck always start. then i go back inside throw another log on the fire, and, let it warm up before i go anywhere. Truly amazing that we live in a country with those extremes.
hello lam from BRASIL,ist cenary for westers, bang bang, kkkkkk, good video desert verygood, beautiful, truck, thanks for video of road,"ldo"truck goodbye my frend.
30:30 I know you like history. If you haven't already you should look up the history of Death Valley Junction and the Amargosa Opera House, Hotel, and Cafe. It's an interesting one. Some places are throwbacks to the 1950s, 60s, 70s. That place is a throwback to the 1920s.
Baker, CA, home of the world's largest thermometer. The fireworks sign in reference to the fireworks being labeled, "Safe and Sane." This is a great way to avoid the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas.
Hey Mike. Ever since you mentioned the old song White Bird a few weeks ago as you went by the pass , i can’t get get it out of my head. Had to dust off the old 6 string and get it down. I’m a music teacher for the Department of Ed here in NYC. I have an idear ! What say I get a sort of trucker version of that song down on the instruments, I send it to you, you add the drums( when you get a little free), and then we audition a few of your subscribers who think they can sing to do the vocals. We would need one good male singer and one female. It could be the first of songs for the road by Michael Pierce and his followers. Songs based on unique places you drive. I love the road and I have ideas in my head for original songs too. What say you ? After all you are the White Bird. White bird must fly.
What you called casino that looked like that Brothel , I stayed in Beatty cool little town . . Lot of brothels between Reno , and Vegas ... Tonopah gas station / store / brothel . And great place to buy Jerky too.
About a month ago I drove the 26' Penske box truck rental from San Diego to Twin Falls, Id. and that Baker Grade on I-15 sucked, big time. Those trucks are severely under powered. 35 mph all the way up the grade. YUK !!!!!!!!
Relaxing to watch your trips. Been to a lot of the places you go but not all. I live in CA. Pssst! Don’t give CA any ideas for ( raising gas prices) ⛽️😫👎 Will keep watching your rides.
You've mentioned "The Obama Clock" a few times in your videos--usually, something to do with driving time/rest time/break time, etc. Haven't these DOT regulations been changed, or relaxed? I read something about this about the middle of last year (2019), in the newspaper. [maybe this only dealt with short-haul drivers...not sure]
No they have definitely not been relaxed if anything they've been constricted.. and I assume they will keep on constricting until the drivers can't breathe.. ☮️
Mike, now you know Yuma can be as hot as fireworks! Lol, have a bottle of water ready. This is when having a fan belt, extra hoses, is a good thing, we always did, love your trip shows! ,PS I know you already know these things. :) Look at the skid marks!! My kids and I would have funny stories what might have happened. Long trips. Polosey , needs to have 50 % taken out of her check for all her "extended" family!
First ,Common sense does not exist , just so you know , going to your comment about the stupid driver at fuel up. Next , Really great thing you do with the videos. Looks like places for "High plains Drifter" or "Duel". And Hellifornia, great , I know Foridiculas. Keep it up man ,peace!
Hello Mike , This was a quiet ride thru the desert . It does not look like theres much going on for employment in this part of the state . A Dem will tax the very life blood , just to spend every one elses money .Take Care Stay SAFE . PEACE
Mike, thanks for the ride on more roads I haven’t been on. I just checked on California gas tax. In July it goes up to $0.473 a gallon plus your 2.25% gasoline sales tax. Federal tax on gasoline is 18.4 cents per gallon and 24.4 cents for diesel fuel. You guys are getting ripped off on diesel. The political policies in California are destroying the state. Sorry to say Oregon and Washington are following the same policies. I hope those motorcycle riders had enough water with them. No fun riding motorcycles in that kind of heat.

Slow down!! I can just see a sheriff waiting to stop a rig. He would say, “son what is the chicken for”? 😂😂😂😂. Be safe
Surprised that the windshield washer worked. So hot and dry I expected it to evaporate between the nozzle and the glass.

LOL
Looks like Mike is off home today and posting vids he didn't have time to post while rolling.
Take a break Mike, you earned it! lol,
Jay
Do you drive line haul or OTR? I would love to have a line haul job out there man. All that nice scenery.
108° is nothing, I live in the Mojave and seen Baker at 124°. Brother and I was off roading in our jeeps.
Heck, it was 118 crossing the bridge over the Colorado near Needles just last Summer.
It gets up to 115 AND HOTTER in Benson Arizona, that is why our folks moved to California, Thank GOD.
