  • Time to check on my bees and I need a new hive tool! Forged from leaf spring, it will be a sturdier addition to the bee yard. Unfortunately, the hives are weak this year, so no honey harvested this time.
    All the best,
    John

    The kiss block attachment on the power hammer is a really slick design

    What else is needed for happiness?

    Awesome work, John! It's gorgeous. I want to forge something similar for my wife. What kind of steel did you use? I haven't used air-hardening steel before but I am curious about it.

      Hi, thanks. I used a truck leaf spring/oil hardening steel. This was an experiment to air harden using aluminum plates+air. The part did harden/a file skated over it. *Because it was so thin, I was worried about warping in an oil quench. I then tempered at 600f for 2hrs. It's straight and works just fine.

    Great tool making...why don't the bees sting your hands?

      You can wear gloves, but you lose dexterity. If you use a smoker you typically won't get stung.

    I’m curious, with your well equipped shop, I assume you blacksmith for a living, not just as a hobby, and only show us occasional personal projects?
    If so, what sorts of things do you make a living forging?

      No, I went the route of a fireman as my main gig. I do metalwork on my off days. There is no way I'd be able to spend the extra time to film and do metalwork full time. I sell projects when I'm happy with them and they can be made within enough time. If they take too long/cost too much I make a video and that at least gets out to the World.

    Sad to hear about the bees not doing well. Seems like your area is pretty dry? The flowers and usual food sources for them are scarce now than they should be, it’s hard work to irrigate enough gardens for flowers to help the bees

      @rigoniironworks  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@deathsromath yeah, it sucks. I have 13 acres and leave it every year to produce wild flowers, but it's hard country over here.
