    This is an awesome video. I hope to achieve this level of realism on my layout some day. I also acquired some of those pressureaid hoppers and had fun weathering them too....they're a cool subject for sure!

Realistic operations add time to an ops session making a smaller layout operate like a much larger one. I can have a 3+ hour ops session on my layout with running 3 switch jobs back to back. Not bad for a layout in a 9'2" by 10'6" train room.-Tom

    Really well-done video! The brake test function in the proto throttle is a great feature. Now I will have to see how it is set up and add it to my throttle.

      Thanks for your comments. The brake test function is a neat feature, especially for smaller switching layouts, but you can really use it during any ops session with the ProtoThrottle. The brake test was a software update about a year or more ago and instructions on how to upgrade your older PrototThrottle are on the ISE website. I reduced the time it takes for the brake pipe pressure to come up from the factory setting, and it was easy to do.-Tom

    I love your layout! Then again I'm fairly bias as pre-pandemic my son and I would go to the pharmacy in Tate for ice cream and watch the yard on a busy afternoon.

    pretty cool... the brake test is a nice touch of realism... a bit of added prototype info, by federal FRA regs, the wheel report must match the way the train stands for safety reasons... and FRA inspectors do pop up from time to time and check things like that

      Hi Boomer, Thanks for your comments. Preiser makes one of the most realistic modern era train crew figure sets on the market. Preiser model # 10420 Modern Workmen with warning vests includes six figures in various poses that are excellent for representing train crew members. Many of the figures are wearing a hard hat and are posed in a realistic stance. The figures are available from Walthers (when in stock) and other hobby stores.-Tom

      I followed your plan but used bigger curves so I could use my favorite locomotives, the SD40-2.

      Hi John, Thanks for your comments. Since I worked for the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway, a subsidiary of the GNRR, I was able to obtain copies under the premise that I would not post them online. My switch lists are "adjusted" for my model railroad, but are very similar. In addition, I met the gentlemen that developed the prototype GNRR forms and he gave me input on how to make mine more realistic. You can see and download copies of my switch list forms on my website, and can modify them to suit your railroad and needs.-Tom

    Do you place the heavier cars on the head end to remove stress on the couplers?

      Hi Luke,
      Yes the heavier cars are normally placed at the head of the train for several reasons and one of those is stress on the couplers. Other factors are to reduce string lining and slack action. If you notice in many derailments the cars that derail are empty centerbeam cars that are placed at the head end of a long train.

      Hi Jeff, Preiser makes one of the most realistic modern era train crew figure sets on the market. Preiser model # 10420 Modern Workmen with warning vests includes six figures in various poses that are excellent for representing train crew members. Many of the figures are wearing a hard hat and are posed in a realistic stance. The figures are available from Walthers (when they are in stock) and other hobby stores. List price is around $21.00. I painted the work vest safety green/yellow on my figures.-Tom

      Hi, The CSX open top hopper cars you saw are from Walthers, they are the 40' 100-Ton Ortner aggregate hopper car. They have long been discontinued, but you can still find them at train shows and online auction sites. They were available in several road names and were sold individually and in a three pack set.       The 40' Ortner cars are somewhat common on the prototype GNRR as they are used for marble chips. I have seen several different versions of the prototype cars and the model comes pretty close to what they look like. I have a couple of shots of the prototype cars on my website under the Prototype tab.

    Loved your use of the Conductor. There is a Model railroader that has people glued to locomotives and cabooses and after you see the same guy riding the locomotive back and forward 15 or 20 times it get unrealistic and I stop watching. Don’t get me started on the guy riding the engine on the main line 😁

      Hi William, Thanks for your comments. I use the conductor figure so that viewers can imagine what a prototype conductor would be doing for switching operations. Following a few prototypical procedures helps a small layout operate like a much larger one as all those steps take time.-Tom

    What is the height of layout? From the floor to the track ? I intent to elevate my table layout from 34" to 46"...

      Hi Luke, My layout is 54" from the floor to the track height. It is a good height for me and most of my operators. I think it is a good call to raise the height of your layout. -Tom
