Hey Justin, thanks for making this great intro guide. I think your point about not getting stuck in a tutorial rabbit hole is super important. I've fallen into that trap a few times myself and it's not so easy to clamber out of there sometimes. Super important advice for any real beginners out there!
Thanks alot martin, I had similar problem learning solidity(Blockchain) and I can't lie I'm giving up on that. Looking to see if I can gather some interest on AR & VR

Ive had this idea in mind for a battlefield style game, but each squad has radios and proximity chat. The game would be in a pastel low poly style for personality, performance, and ease of development. Imagine those chaotic final stand moments with your freinds in VR. Thanks so much!! I think VRIF is an amazing starting point, especially if you're just getting into VR. I'd definitely recommend using that to dive into the source code and quickly figure out how different VR mechanics work. One of the main issues I'd be concerned about is it being updated to whatever the current Unity XR technology is and not getting outdated. Glad you're here!

I am specifically excited about UI/UX design for virtual reality. I'm very comfortable with coding like yourself and don't necessarily want to work with design applications but I'm fascinated by user experience challenges in VR. I'm also familiar with C#, but with mainly with typescript and web tech. Do you think I could skip some steps and jump pretty quick into throwing together assets to develop UX flows with unity and build some kind of portfolio? That is, without going down an FPS path first.
That's the kind of stuff that gets me super excited! I'd definitely recommend adding some cool VR UI/UX stuff to a portfolio. There are tons of XR designer positions opening up right now.
Couple of things he does not tell you. 1. Every engine, every platform and every headset I was using 8 years ago in VR development is obsolete. You will have to learn and then relearn everything every 2 or 3 years. Some stuff translates okay like unity, but even going from unity 4 to 5 and using different SDK's proved to me that I had to pretty much start from scratch. 2. So you have a great idea for an App or game. If it is actually good be prepared to defend your creations, because others will clone , steal, and do everything under the sun to discredit you or do everything in their power to make you fail so they can come out on top. 3. Cost, if you are not pirating software and don't already have the hardware then you will be spending some cash to test on multiple platforms and headsets.
Thank you so much for creating this video. I have been looking for this kind of explanation for months. Now I'm going to become VR Developer soon! Much respect, Much Love from Pakistan ❤

A bit of advice for newcomers; if you "try" VR using a smartphone, you will be experiencing a tiny slice of what is possible with a purpose-built headset. Keep in mind that the "wow" factor is still there with a lesser device, but is nowhere near the immersion you will experience with a full 6 DOF rig. I was hooked by experimenting with phones and headset adapters, like Google cardboard and others, because I saw possibilities that wouldn't be limited by the state of the art, even as limited as it was at the time, because I was thinking about AR and industrial training applications. Three years ago, I bought the Oculus "GO" which was a huge improvement compared to even the best smartphone/headset adapter, but with no cameras AR development was out of the question. But while trying other experiences within the limited 3 DOF "GO" environment, I was always wishing I could "lean over and look over the side" of a roller coaster car, or whatever. Now I have the Meta (Oculus) Quest 2, which makes me wonder why I was fooling around with lesser hardware all along (perhaps because the technology didn't exist yet?). I have to say, if somebody decides to get serious, do invest in the right equipment, because otherwise it's like a rank beginner trying to learn to play a cheap instrument; it is possible to learn, but the instrument is harder to play, and the tones are uninspiring, making the learning process a lot more work than it should be.
Good video, but you missed one important thing about the Oculus Quest 2, it also can be connected to a PC, then you don't need other specific and more expensive devices to do this.

Got into VR a couple of years ago. Started cold with PSVR, I'd never tried it, never even had a console before, not particularly interested in gaming. But I liked 3D movies and figured I would like VR. Like is not strong enough a word though, I loved it. I was completely obsessed with it for the first six months and still typically spend a couple of hours a day in VR if not 5-6 2 years later. I got an original Quest a bit over a year ago and started learning Unity a couple of months after that. Decided to take a break from Unity after Xmas as I kept being frustrated with the online lessons jumping from basic scripting to stuff I had no idea how to do. I have played around with a little scripting over the years out of curiosity but before VR I never found anything interesting enough to motivate me and it used to be so tedious. I wonder if you appreciate just how much better the script editors available now make coding? So I concentrated on 3D modelling for a while then finally got a VR capable PC a few months back after which I drowned myself in learning how to mod SkESVR, Fo4VR and modelling with the tools available for that. Haven't attempted the Creation engine software as I appear to need the pancake games to use it? Currently having problems with Steam, might be a bug from VRChat, Steam support haven't been helpful.

I can't see the date this video relased but are you still keeping your advice about headsets? Or let me share my personal use case; I have an iMac and iPhone; and i ran into nReal's newly relased AR glasses. So that, I don't know if it's possible to use these standalone headsets together with my apple environment or if it's quickly possible to deploy and play my own prototypes within these standalone headsets? And fairly i don't know very much about nReal's glasses even I heard about their Apple integration so what's different than standalone headsets.
if I where to attempt to make a vr game where the thing you play as is not humanoid shaped at all, how would I go about it? (beyond this point is my rambling and going into detail.) like if I wanted to make the player a squid is there a simple way for the player to move each appendage, or if I wanted to make someone an attack helicopter is there a way to make it immersive without using a person inside as a catalyst for the player? also is it possible to make a 2 dimensional game in vr? if so can the player be a drawing on a pice of paper with out it just being a pc game with a headset instead of a screen? or for a less dramatic approach, extra appendages like a tale or wings or an extra head… 2 people with one body… anyway what I’m asking is “is there a way to make these things not completely break immersion?”
I don't mind coding in C++, but it's quite cumbersome with header files, etc. C# is an absolute joy to use. Also, I would consider the Valve Index before HTC Vive.

How are the M1 Machines for AR / VR development?
I've the M1 MacBook Air
even if you get motion sick, you get past that eventually! almost everyone gets that when they first try VR
Yes! Just takes practice
Justin, i want to view an aircraft in my back yard, insert the 3d object in a vr app, how i can start?
Great Video Justin.

I'm 26 yo, I'm entering computer science this year, i like VR ❤️😍
Hi Justin I just subscribed to your channel. Love your content. Keep up the good work.
which VR headset is best for 3d world visualization?
Would I be able to create a VR project using a Mac?
Yes! Only issue is that you’d have to run a build every time you want to test instead of testing in play mode
Do I need a powerful pc ? What specs you recommend?
You need a computer that has a graphics card! That's the main requirement
thanks for helping and sharing!
No problem!
if I where to attempt to make a vr game where the thing you play as is not humanoid shaped at all, how would I go about it?
(beyond this point is my rambling and going into detail.)
like if I wanted to make the player a squid is there a simple way for the player to move each appendage, or if I wanted to make someone an attack helicopter is there a way to make it immersive without using a person inside as a catalyst for the player? also is it possible to make a 2 dimensional game in vr? if so can the player be a drawing on a pice of paper with out it just being a pc game with a headset instead of a screen? or for a less dramatic approach, extra appendages like a tale or wings or an extra head… 2 people with one body… anyway what I’m asking is “is there a way to make these things not completely break immersion?”
Hi can I use Ocolus Quest 1 for developing steam VR games or it has to be Ocolus Quest 2?
Absolutely! The Quest 1 works fine
Hi Justin which software would you use to create a flying through the clouds video scene for a VR headset?
Hai
I want to design normal simulations not exactly the games with unity helps or there is anything else I can use?
Unity is perfect for simulations!
I don't mind coding in C++, but it's quite cumbersome with header files, etc. C# is an absolute joy to use. Also, I would consider the Valve Index before HTC Vive.
Agreed, also got the Valve Index and I highly recommend!
