Willie Mays was my favorite player growing. That was until I saw Roberto Clemente in what would be his last games in the series vs the Orioles. I could not wait to follow him in the next year. Alas. Not to be. Great man!
Respect and honor to Mays. I was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The generation of Mays, Aaron, Gibson, Koufax, Clemente, Mantle, Robinson, and many more, is to me the best generation. These guys did not play the game for millions. As a sidebar, Mays, Aaron and obviously Clemente played in the PR winter league. We got used to see caviar on the field. Dear memories.
I go back to the greats of the past also. Early on, a lot of players hit .400, up to Hornsby's .424. But the defenses weren't anywhere near as good as what they are now, and team managers let their best pitchers slog on when they were having a bad day (like, who have I got any better?). Hitters play more games than pitchers, so I would have to pick at hitter. My choice is Ted Williams. He missed several years during WWII, and even more during the Korean war. He hit well over .300 his last year, and a home run to finish the last game.
Mickey Mantle said Aaron was the best player he ever saw (and Henry was my favorite). Mays was probably the greatest of his generation. Clemente was a stud. I throughly enjoyed baseball from the late 50’s into the 70’s. Toss in Mantle, Ted Williams among many others and what a great game back then. 2 hours, vs 3.5 hours! Besides the Milwaukee Braves, I was a fan of the Tigers and particularly Kaline. Dude had an arm almost as good as Clemente’s.
i would take kaline over clemente any day of the week. kaline's arm was better than clemente. clemente is over-rated. so is mays. if you are asking about the most powerful arm, then i would say clemente. but if you want to throw the runner out, kaline is hands down. clemente wasnt anywhere near as accurate as kaline was. most of the time kaline would one-hop the ball to the catcher, making it easier for the catcher. kaline was one of the most consistent players around. and clemente was certainly not as good a fielder as kaline. no one was as good a right fielder as mr kaline was. clemente became better AFTER HE DIED. i dont dislike him. he was probably a great man. some people, for whatever reason, stay popular with later generations. willie mays was not the best hitter on the giants. that honor goes to willie mccovey. he was the most feared hitter in baseball for quite a few years. having mccovey hit behind you was a big advantage for mays. the pitcher has to pitch to mays. a lot of pitchers would simply walk mccovey, if he didnt swing at any bad pitches.
cmon man kaline or anyone else was not a better arm than clemente ! I saw him overthrow 3rd base into the stands from the corner of right field ! very few players can even throw that far let alone on a line drive like clemente did ! mays is the 2nd best arm I ever saw
@@Michael-hq1iq you must not have read what i wrote. if you wanted to throw the runner out, kaline was your best bet. he was accurate to the nth degree. clemente was powerful, but nowhere near as accurate. i dont have as much of a memory of mays' arm. he was a showboat on the field. made everything look more difficult than it really was.
I made several throws from the warning track in right field at three rivers stadium to home plate as a high school athlete and while my coaches and teammates were in awe I reminded them that clemente makes that throw on a line while mine was more of a rainbow ! if you ever stand out there and see how far that is away @@jimmybrice6360

None better than Brooks Robinson, and I saw Mantle and Mays.
If you are the GOAT you have to do what no one else has done. You have to be all around the best. What incredible names being mentioned. I can't remember a player who was just great on and off the field the way Clemente was. But the GOAT is the guy known as the Sultan of Swat and his gaudy World Series ERA.
I have been following a team from a small town on the Ohio River for over sixty years and despite some great teams and great players, I’d say Clemente was the best I ever saw.
Up to date, Willie Mays is the greatest player. Roberto Clemente was a fabulous player. Nobody was better than Willie, write that down so you do not forget
For the time period over their two overlapping careers, I believe Clemente had the highest batting average in baseball. It was before my time, but I love reading about baseball history.
@@leoderosia9279 I loved Joe D but he was not as good as Willie. Not close actually. I think Ted was focused on hitting ability when he made the comparison. Joe couldn’t run or throw with Willie.

My team. Outfield Mays, Ruth, T. Williams. SS Jeter. 3rd base Schmidt, 1st base Aaron. 2nd base Joe Morgan. Catcher Yogi Berra. Pitchers Kofax, Gibson. Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson. Michael Jordan was the best player on a team that won 6 rings. Russell 11. Kobe had Shaq for 3 rings. Kareem had Magic. Only Duncan, with 5 rings did not have another star.
Caught Willie Mays foul ball vs. Pirates early 60s, my cousin, a young reporter for SF Chronicle got me into locker room for Mays to sign it..he didn’t do that at the time, cousin felt bad for me so we got Clemente to sign it..talked to me for 20 minutes, about everything, was my all time Favorite Ball player
Roberto Clemente was more than the greatest baseball player ever, much more, way much more and I still do not understand why is number 21 is still used in the MLB. Shame on those players who still wear that number.
Clemente was amazing. But growing up watching Willie, gotta say he was everything Clemente was, but with the home run power. If he hadn’t juiced up, I think Barry Bonds (who, even as a Giants fan, I could not stand) would eclipse Willie, but with the juice, we’ll never know.
Willie was the GOAT. He even had the humility to point the attention to someone else proving the point even more. Clemente had a better arm than him, that's all.

Clemente was fun to watch in the outfield. He liked to make basket catches down around his knees, just for the fun of it. He had a cannon for an arm and threw out a lot of baserunners. Another way he stood out was by hitting very hard line drives straight back at the pitcher. It was dangerous to pitch against him. Sadly Roberto died in a plane crash at age 38 while delivering disaster relief supplies to Central America. RIP Roberto.
Clemente is certainly one of the all-time greats. He was a joy to watch. However, Willie is incorrect when he tells us that Roberto will hit you 25 home runs per season. Roberto reached that total ONCE during his illustrious career, in 1966 with 29. In fact, during his 18-year career, Clemente reached 20 home runs, THREE times (23, 23, 29). He averaged 13.33 home runs per season (240 home runs in 18 years).
Roberto played in "Yellowstone Park" Forbes Field 365 FT Left , 407 Left Center, 457 Centerfield. He adapted his hitting to line drives in the alleys. He is still the only hitter I know of who cleared the top of the Scoreboard at Wrighley Field.

These conversations regarding the GOATs in professional sports are so colored by the prejudices of the people being asked that they have no value. It's like beauty; it's all in the eyes of the beholder! Mays thinks Clemente was the greatest he ever saw ... for most of his career he was regarded as the third best RFer in the NL behind Aaron and Frank Robinson. He only won one MVP in his car- eer for a reason.
THE GREATEST baseball player of all time is Yogi Berra. He won the world championship 10 times and played the most important position on the team, catcher. He certainly wasn't the greatest athlete, but achieved the most important statistic of all, World Series Championships more than any other player in the history of the game
Yogi WAS a great athlete. He was actually a speedy runner, hit for both average & power, and struck out as seldom as Tony Gwynn. He was good enough, in his mid 30s, to start in left field in 1960 and 1961. For two pennant winners and one World Series winner.
I'm sorry folks , with all the pressure involved , and democratic racism back then , i would have to say Jackie Robinson is and will always take the cake of all time in the history of baseball.
Seems to me baseball and football are the only sports you don’t see the best player say themselves. Mays would have probably said another 2-3 players were best. Ted Williams certainly listed off an entire squad of players before he said himself. Same when Barry Sanders was asked, Jerry Rice and so on….LeBron? Oh I’m the GOAT….one, no you are not. Two, other than point total the rest of your stats are suspect as stat padding and as to on court efficiency and defense are laughable and at least 4-10 players come to mind on who is better not just the GOAT.
@kellykarcher7179 Pete Rose started several all-star games at different positions. Pete has more base hits than any other player. I'm not saying Clemente wasn't good. You are right he did have a lot of singles he was a contact hitter. He did have one inside the park home run. Charlie Hustle.
@@joecron5745 Rose started several all-star game because he was a great leadoff hitter. The fact that he played different positions doesn't necessarily make him a great defensive player. Roberto played one more season after the 71 series. September 30th of the 72 season is when he got his 3000th hit, which be his last
That team should have made it back to the world series too@@robertnewton2514
I saw him in Cincinnati his last yr,I saw many great players but I gush a little extra when I talk of Clemente. He was the man!
You remember the cartoon, The Say Hay Kid. Not only was he a great ball player but a fine human being.
Clemente was the best I ever saw play the game. I didn't have the chance to see Mays at the height of his talents.
Absolutely 💯
Respect and honor to Mays. I was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The generation of Mays, Aaron, Gibson, Koufax, Clemente, Mantle, Robinson, and many more, is to me the best generation. These guys did not play the game for millions. As a sidebar, Mays, Aaron and obviously Clemente played in the PR winter league. We got used to see caviar on the field. Dear memories.
I agree 💯 with Willie. He was overlooked because of Mantle, Mays and Aaron.
Willie was number one! Period!
I love Mays but check his world series' numbers sometime...are they great?
My greatest baseball player is 1. Willie Mays 1a. Roberto Clemente.
Outstanding choices, and I would add Hank Aaron.
@@JonBestSpiritualCoachonEarth
Clemente was the best fielder and had the best arm out of the 3.
@@johnnysmith7109 You may be right
Willie was right about Clemente, so nice to hear!!
that is a great pick! Roberto was top tier
Vin Scully said WILLIE MAYS was the BEST HE EVER SAW.
so did Al Kaline
Al Kaline was the first player to be awarded the Roberto Clemente award
If it was 1951 I'd take Mantle over Mays in a NY minute.
Mickey Mantle said Ted Williams was the greatest.pure hitter he ever saw
Ted Williams picked Stan Musial
Last hit was a one hand single, I think, I remember watching his last game on tv.
Roberto Clemente, one of the greatest ever.
Roberto Clemente is without a doubt in the Top-5 all-time greats...
Nonsense.
Definitely top 25.
Clemente was one of the best
I think it was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar that said the same thing about Roberto Clemente. A basketball player commenting on a baseball player
Say hey, Willie!
R.I.P. legend.⚾️🧢
Bill Russell said it best although MJ was a great basketball player he never drove the lane with Wilt waiting for him down there
What's interesting is Clemente Sturgill and Alou played for the Pirates in the Outfield and the Pirates never won a World Series
Say hey kid 24 was the greatest all around ...
True. Far better than Mays.
Interesting tidbit. Willie is the only man in MLB history to hit a home run in every inning from 1 to 16.
Great stat, thank you!
For the time period over their two overlapping careers, I believe Clemente had the highest batting average in baseball. It was before my time, but I love reading about baseball history.
Ted Williams picked babe Ruth then Joe d, Mays
@@leoderosia9279 I loved Joe D but he was not as good as Willie. Not close actually. I think Ted was focused on hitting ability when he made the comparison. Joe couldn’t run or throw with Willie.
@@bp4187 DiMaggio was also a great cf and baserunner who always made the right play. If he had played in another stadium and not lost 3 years to ww2 then he gets 500 hrs. ....I think ted knew what he was talking about

…and Vinny knew of what he spoke…
I remember getting to see Mays hit a home run in an old timers game in Arlington Texas
My team. Outfield Mays, Ruth, T. Williams. SS Jeter. 3rd base Schmidt, 1st base Aaron. 2nd base Joe Morgan. Catcher Yogi Berra. Pitchers Kofax, Gibson. Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson. Michael Jordan was the best player on a team that won 6 rings. Russell 11. Kobe had Shaq for 3 rings. Kareem had Magic. Only Duncan, with 5 rings did not have another star.
Rings - th-cam.com/video/lYTtyKLhT0w/w-d-xo.html
He had David Robinson for one championship and Ginobli and Tony Parker for the others. It wasn't just Timmy.
Hammering Hank Aaron.
He may not be number one but top five easy if you consider how he affected every game…Ricky Henderson…..!
Babe Ruth, hands down the greatest.
Sounds about right Willie…..
Willie was the GOAT. He even had the humility to point the attention to someone else proving the point even more. Clemente had a better arm than him, that's all.
RIP LEGEND MAYS MAN CRAZY THESE BLACK GUYS DIED FIRST ROBINSON THEN HANK AARON AND NOW MAYS RIP THESE LEGENDS MAN
we all do man

Correct, man.
RC. The original 5 tools player.
I had a Roberto Clemente card.
I sold mine.
Billy Martin picked al kaline
I'd have to go with Babe Ruth, since he probably would have gone to the HoF as a pitcher had he continued pitching.
Mays is commenting on his contemporaries, "The best I saw..."
No need to denigrate Willie or the Babe. If you're comparing me to either guy, I've done very well for myself. The Bambino would've loved Willie.
I saw clemente with my little league team and he was amazing. I don't know who is a better all around player
Willie Mays has always been my #1 favorite MLB player of all time. Roberto Clemente would definitely make my top 10 list of all time greatest players.

Babe Ruth was the greatest player
Clemente was fun to watch in the outfield. He liked to make basket catches down around his knees, just for the fun of it. He had a cannon for an arm and threw out a lot of baserunners. Another way he stood out was by hitting very hard line drives straight back at the pitcher. It was dangerous to pitch against him. Sadly Roberto died in a plane crash at age 38 while delivering disaster relief supplies to Central America. RIP Roberto.
Right, one time RC hit a ball back to Bob Gibson and broke his leg.
He is still the only hitter I know of who cleared the top of the Scoreboard at Wrighley Field.
good call willie , clemente was the best player I ever saw on a baseball field !
I assume you never saw Aaron or Frank Robinson or Mickey Mantle.
@@tonypassaretti saw them all ! during the 79 series frank Robinson talked shit on clemente and he soon found out he was not in Roberto's class look that up
Frank Robinson was far better than Clemente! Much more power and runs produced! Robinson was one of the most underrated players in baseball history!

These conversations
regarding the GOATs
in professional sports
are so colored by the
prejudices of the people
being asked that they
have no value.
It's like beauty; it's all in
the eyes of the beholder!
Mays thinks Clemente
was the greatest he ever
saw ... for most of his
career he was regarded
as the third best RFer in
the NL behind Aaron and
Frank Robinson. He only
won one MVP in his car-
eer for a reason.
In 1955, The Pirates paid $4,000 for the rights to Clemente. 12GG, 4 batting titles, and 2 World Series wins later...
Clemente is also the only rule 5 player to make it to the HOF.
Ted Williams
I’m the best ball player
THE GREATEST baseball player of all time is Yogi Berra. He won the world championship 10 times and played the most important position on the team,
catcher. He certainly wasn't the greatest athlete, but achieved the most important statistic of all, World Series Championships more than any other player
in the history of the game
Yogi WAS a great athlete.
He was actually a speedy runner, hit for both average & power, and struck out as seldom as Tony Gwynn. He was good enough, in his mid 30s, to start in left field in 1960 and 1961. For two pennant winners and one World Series winner.
Sorry still Babe Ruth.
Babe Ruth was the greatest.
#21 should be retired baseball wide....just like #42...
ROBERTO CLEMENTE AGreat ! Ballplayer
I'm sorry folks , with all the pressure involved , and democratic racism back then , i would have to say Jackie Robinson is and will always take the cake of all time in the history of baseball.
You're brainwashed by the conservative media then.
Mantle was better than Mays
I don't think so.State your case. I would like to hear it
Satchel Paige
Clemente
Seems to me baseball and football are the only sports you don’t see the best player say themselves. Mays would have probably said another 2-3 players were best. Ted Williams certainly listed off an entire squad of players before he said himself. Same when Barry Sanders was asked, Jerry Rice and so on….LeBron? Oh I’m the GOAT….one, no you are not. Two, other than point total the rest of your stats are suspect as stat padding and as to on court efficiency and defense are laughable and at least 4-10 players come to mind on who is better not just the GOAT.
After the 1971 world series clemente played another year 1972 was his last year when he died why do you say not to be
Clemente was better than Mays!
he picked Clemente because of his skin color.....same reason Spike Lee is saying that MLB should retire Mays' number.
You are either a mind reader or you're brainwashed by the conservative media.
Number 1? Hank Aaron. If he didn't hit a single homerun, he still had 3,000 hits.
That’s amazing
Pete Rose.
End of story.
Haha! Rose was a great singles hitter who played extremely hard. That's about it...
@kellykarcher7179 Pete Rose started several all-star games at different positions. Pete has more base hits than any other player. I'm not saying Clemente wasn't good. I'm just saying Pete is the best. Bar none. When he went to Philadelphia to play for the Phillies, the players learned what it took to win a world series. You are right he did have a lot of singles he was a contact hitter. He did have one inside the park home run. Charlie Hustle.
@@joecron5745 Rose started several all-star game because he was a great leadoff hitter. The fact that he played different positions doesn't necessarily make him a great defensive player. They basically needed him in the lineup and there was no DH. Rose has more hits than any other player because he hung on way past his prime just to surpass Ty Cobb's hit record. He was a below average player the last several years of his career. Willie Mays was the greatest all-around player who ever played the game. Mays was a 5 tool player. Rose was just a 1 (possibly 2) tool player. It's as simple as that...
im a Ty Cobb fan. Look at how many at bats it took Rose to pass Ty's hits record
@waveblast2 your right about that. Pete is the hit king, and he was a great defensive player too. Pete is to baseball what Dale Earnhardt is to Nascar racing, the only difference is that they didn't bend the rules for Pete.
