Andrea Rossiello Depends on how many you are making. You can use scraps or yardage. Each hexagon starts at 6” “square” so If making several I would estimate using a 7” square for each ornament. That way you have a little wiggle room.
I have been fascinated by what can be done with folded paper since my grade school days 60 years ago. Paper airplanes, fortune tellers, folded paper cups, gum wrapper chains, and paper water balloons were a few of the objects I folded before I learned the term origami. It is the craft that continues to draw and inspire me over time. I love when I can combine me various hobbies. This is especially true when fabric, sewing, and origami combine. ❤️ Thank you for this video to remind me of this hexagon ornament that I have made from both paper and fabric over the years.
You are not talking too much....more like just enough!you are very clear and concise! Thank you for your wonderful instructions and thank you for sharing your tips and tricks!
Hi ,I wrote you before but had to tell you I've tried this snowflake with paper and made some very pretty ones with buttons in the center and coloured pencils designs on them too but one I made with a square shape and then cut out V shapes in between the folded diamonds..it turned out very pretty ,like a cross made of diamond shapes and I put some interesting buttons on it from my grandmother's button box..thanks I'm addicted to making them..I used origami paper and cut a diamond shape, the same colour, glued it over the threads (on the back) I used to tack down the points..thanks again for putting this on you tube.
That’s so creative. I like the idea of using plain paper and decorating them. Fun for adults but also a way to include the younger kids. They can color the paper and we can turn them o to ornaments. Thanks for sharing.
Origami and fabric work well together. I completely agree. Slow Stitching has become a popular phrase and it’s perfect. Hand stitching is slow but it also slows us physically and mentally which allows us to have a moment or of peace and calm. ☃️❄️
This is darling. You've explained it so beautifully. I have SO MUCH Christmas fabric and many little pieces. This would be so perfect! I could see making these also as "fabric flowers" in an even smaller size, to put on my mini albums and to use as toppers for cards. Definitely going to try this!
I loved your tutorial! I made this ornament one or two years ago and found it in our Christmas stuff. I could only remember partly how to make it. I had the same problem as you. All the tutorials were in another language or not enough info. Yours is great. I'll probably someday find the instruction someday, somewhere in my sewing room!
Thank you! I do that all the time in the sewing room. I remember having something but I can never find where I tucked it away. I think we all have that problem somewhere in our lives.
The first one I tried I threw in the trash about 3 minutes in. Then I realized I wasn't being patient enough lol so I took it back out and watched again. I love it! I will be making lots of these! Thanks for the directions!
Loved this 3 years ago and still love it. I probably watched it 3 or 4 times back then. Just can't remember making them. So this will be the ornament I give to my granddaughters and church kids this year, 2022.
I made these years ago but not with the interfacing or sewing. It was all finger press. The center was glued in place after all the diamonds were formed. I then glued a button over the center. Thank you for the tutorial! I have been looking for this pattern for years!
Those are so pretty and I think as many times as you said how to do it I might be able to make them, I need to be told over and over to get some things right. Thank you for this video!!!
Oh ! ! Why do I watch TH-cam videos? This will be another project. Last year I watch a video on quilted ornaments and now have at least a dozen. Then started an English paper piece project. This will be fun. I love to make/craft items. I have made afghans and scarves for many years. The new projects have been a nice change.
I have made over a dozen and still going. I made several small ones and some a little larger. I have one of the cloth die cutters and used the 8" hexagon die and larger ones are easier. I have a bag of flat white snowflake buttons and put small to medium on the top side and a large one on the back. That way on the tree either side looks good. Going to put them on packages for an extra little gift. Thanks for the tutorial!
That is awesome!! I believe I might have the same snowflake buttons and you’re right, they are perfect for this ornament. I’ll have to try making some larger ones. I think a tree decorated with dozens of these in different sizes but the same color scheme would be pretty. Thank you for letting me know about your success. Merry Christmas! ❄️❄️❄️
Thanks so much. A few years ago, I started a project to make a vest with these in a panel on the front for my sister. Had forgotten about it until now. This is a great idea. You could use wrapping paper scraps fortified with perhaps freezer paper to embellish gifts. I'm defiantly going to play with this. Tyfs. Love your tutorials & no I don't think you talk too much! LOL
Thank you I tried the Pentagon one last year and liked it but could not get templates large enough . I will certainly try these looking forward to trying it. Have you tried it in paper or light weight cardboard.?
Your thorough, repetitive instructions are perfect for me!!! I, like you, am a hands on learner …. I’m a new subscriber…so glad to have found you! Love your teaching methods
Thank you. That’s how I want my channel and community to feel. Like we’re all hanging out sewing and chatting about life. There’s plenty of TH-cam videos that just give you the measurements so you’re in and out in under 10 minutes. I know I was looking for people to craft & chat with since I don’t have anyone locally. I’m glad you enjoy the chatter.
Really enjoyed making this the hardest thing about it is to make the hexagon. There's a guy on TH-cam that does it with origami. Thank you you're a good teacher.
Thoroughly enjoyed your tutorial! Thanks for sifting through the various videos and working out all the bugs for us! I’m up in the middle of the night and starting one now!
Aileen Kline My daughter took me tonight. I found several fun fabrics. It’s all 50% off of course. We didn’t find many novelty buttons. It seems like JoAnns isn’t carrying as many buttons as they used to. Sad.
I’ve noticed that to be true at all of the usual places I used to get cute buttons. I’m looking for some for a button craft and will be forced to order online.
Thank you for sharing this ornament. I have a little wooden tool to use for pressing that would be great for pressing the edges of this ornament. I made another design that was along this same idea that was square for ornaments and sold them at craft shows. I think I made almost a hundred that year and batiks work up nicely for these ornaments too. Thanks again!
Batiks would would make lovely ornaments. Yes, I need to pick up one of those wooden tools for finger pressing. It would come in handy for many projects.
Robin, when making the knot for the hanging string, I knot it just like you did, pull it tight, and then to make it even tighter, take the loop, open it up and pull the two side apart from each other from inside the loop. That will tighten the knot up even more. Thanks for showing how to make these. ♥ ♥ ♥
@@rsislandcrafts You have to try it Robin. I have a question about the size of the hexagon. When you say use a 6 inch hexagon, how are you measuring the 6 inch? Side-To-Side? Point-To-Point? Along the side edge?
It's grey and dreary today...I have made a deal with myself..when my "chores" are finished I can try this!!! Sometimes I just feel like doing hand work with a needle and thread and this is perfect!
I'm soooo glad I found your tutorial! Thanks for doing all the legwork and giving such easy to follow instructions!! I love your teaching style. Can't wait to make these out of my stash of Okinawan bingata kimono fabric! Thanks for sharing your gift and you don't talk too much...it was PERFECT!!
Love the project....have just tried and will make more. I used a self adhesive gem front and back. Added a bit of sparkle for Christmas. Thank you for sharing.
I used a linen fabric without interfacing the first time I tried these, but found the fabric frayed a lot. The second time, I outlined the inside edge of the cut lines with Tacky Glue and let it dry before I cut the fabric. It worked great! The glue made the edges stiffer and made it easy to sew even without interfacing. One hint - don't use washable ink for the cut lines, use something permanent or the glue will erase the markings!
Eva Olson Thank you for the tips! I keep hearing good things about linen. I need to grab some and see how It works up. A fabric with a little body would be helpful in many projects.
Very well explained. Thank you. I’ll have to see if I have any Christmas material left. I’ll definitely save this. My children and grandchildren love getting ornaments. Because they were homemade.
I hand embroidered a simple ribbon rose or poinsettia and a few other shapes on the back of mine. Just let you’re creativity flow🙌🏼no need to buy ribbon just for this step but use crafting ribbon( not wired) ,embroidery floss or yarn of choice and a large eyed embroidery needle. Stay safe and healthy everyone ❤️TYFS
Folded hexagon Christmas Ornament - I love making and collecting Christmas ornaments.
i wish i had printed directions for this. i forgot how to do it!! i love all u do!!!!
also hot glued button on, hard time to sew buttons
These are lovely. How much fabric do you use? 1/2 yard?

I'm making a huge amount because I'm going to stitch them together and use them for garland on my tree. Thank you so much for this pattern.
Sarah, that’s my wish list project too. A long garland for my tree. I was thinking about adding some beads in between. Happy stitching!!

Loved the video. If you're into quilting, this would make a really awesome grandma's garden quilt.
Great idea!
The back center would be perfect to cover up with a personalized label. These ornaments are beautiful and I love that you made this easy to follow.
Great idea!! Thanks!
You made this complicated looking ornament seem so do-able! I appreciated the repeat instructions. I agree it melds it into my brain!
Thank you!
I made these for my Grandma using my Grandpa’s shirts. He passed away 3 years ago. My grandma absolutely loved them. Thanks for such a great tutorial.
That’s very sweet. What a lovely memory for your Grandma. Merry Christmas 🎄
Thanks for sharing the details on making these cute hexagon ornaments!

Wow, thank you! That’s very sweet of you to say. 💜
I think the pink amendment is so beautiful too. Thanks for sharing your lovely art. I loved the explanation. Thanks.
I love these. I can’t stop making them. Each year, I make a tree ornament for my family. This year they are all getting this one. Thank you. 🌲
