Thank you for this. Two more questions for you.
    1. My battery registers 2.8 (the battery is rated at 3.85). In my experience that still means not good. True?
    2. I tested the battery charger leads in the battery bay while the phone was plugged in to the wall. It registered 0.01 to 0.03. The phone is still good? (at least the charging leads)

how would you find out which is positive and which is negative if the battery doesnt have the symbols? cheers

I need to know how to measure the battery life of a tablet with a non removable battery that will not start (dont know if its bricked, or if the batt is just too dead...). Its a micro usb. I was wondering if I could cut off a piece of a charging cable, plug it into the port, and measure the voltage with a multimeter on the cut off end of the cable. I dont know how many wires are in a micro usb cable, but I'm guessing a wall charger may only have 2 (because its only function is to charge micro usb devices, and can only be plugged into a wall) Will this work to measure battery voltage on micro usb devices? If not I really could use the help, as I also have a few more lipo powered things that have no battery display, and are charged through micro usb. thanks if anyone can help!

I have a tablet and the batt is non removable, I need to know if it is bricked or if the battery is dead. How can I measure the battery voltage through the micro USB port? I have a multimeter and extra micro USB charging/data cables. Can you give me any advice?

I'm getting that error you mention right at the beginning. I have taken the screen off. Then charged it overnight. But when the screen is reconnected, on startup I still get the battery icon and then immediate shutdown. As you describe if there isn't enough juice in the battery to even start to charge it. How can I get my new battery up to operating charge?

sir good did you mean when you testing a good port usb you must connect the charging device to the usb port..no problem for that because you remove the battery..pls help me

Larry, he is checking the (mini) USB port to see if it works. The way the port "works" is it accepts power from the charging wire, and brings that power to the battery. He can't use the meter to check the charging wire, so he is checking if it is bringing power to the battery.

Did you connect the USB cable to an A/C adapter or computer USB port or does it matter?

Mac Cullete - it won't matter when testing for voltage. Both A/C charging blocks and USB from a computer both out out 5 volts. the current is what will vary. computers through a 2.0 USB connection charge a device slower because the current is .5 amps The Average charging block is about 1 amp. be wary of plugging devices into just any block though. be careful you don't plug a small device into a Tablet charger. they are usually 2 or 2.4 amps and this will usually cause the battery of smaller devices to have cells go bad or swell. best idea is always to check the factory block that came with the device for the "Output:" label and use a charger of equal or lesser amperage.

How about iphone 6 charging port, how to test it via multimeter?

    • @suddenleaf

U might have a battery problem because iPhone 6's tend to have..... Crappy batteries. I have one and it has battery problems and drains too fast, in some cases the percentage reading may be innacurate so that's why some iPhone 6's don't charge all the way up like they are supposed to.

@@suddenleaf iphone 6 test.... connect phone usb to 4v... 0,1amps.... connect power supply to multimeter and u place the ground on pin 8.... all the other pins shouldnt have any amperage.. tristar problem... initial boot of phone should also go from 200 and 300ma if its faulted

Help I did this just to test if it works because my phone charges properly and everything but it didnt not show me a reading the phone is an S5 and i did exactly what u said first looked at the battery to see which leads to test and it still doesnt give me a reading.

Carlos Ulloa that means the charger port for you phone isn't working.(try the charger on another phone to make sure it is functional) either due to water damage, the inside of the port being messed up or broken, or possibly the connections on the back of the port are no longer soldered to the mother board. take your phone to a repair shop and they will be able to repair it. I assume you mean a galaxy S5. if thats the case they may charge a few more dollar than normal for the repair because they have to remove the screen (which Is attached with a double side adhesive) from the phone's frame to get to the port. then they have to attach it back.

Carlos Ulloa oh you said the phone charges properly already. make sure you have a good connection to your multimeter and that you multimeter is functioning properly. touch the positive and negative leads from the multi meter to the positive and negative of the battery to see if it gives you around 3.7 volts first. if it doesn't, set your meter to the 1k, 2k, 3k, or 4k setting under the ohms selection and touch the meters leads together and the meter should show all 0's if the connections for the meter are good.

Lol thats the funny thing Alex Shockley i did all that and everything is working properly weirdest thing. battery is at 3.8volts universal charger was at 5.3v that only thing that isnt working is checking the leads to the battery on the phone a few times i moved the point around and it marked 4.7v but it doesnt read constant and the multimeter works fine from other tests ive done and the phone charges like a charm lol

Mine has voltage (and shows charging icon when connected) but on Ampere the current is 0. So it must be a software problem - right?
