Massey Harris 44 Special or Just a 44 - What IS The Difference - Precarious Offload? You Decide

  • Another dead tractor is unloaded on the inclined area in a very safe manner. At least for me it is. I do not suggest anyone else takes the things I do for the full 'safety approved' method of doing anything at all...much less unloading a tractor.
    Yes, of course the tractor is currently not among the 'living', but with a little luck and a few bucks, hopefully it will become another reliable daily driver. So many times I need a little more oomph pulling a load around the shop or moving a heavily loaded trailer out of the woods. THIS old guy will be the ticket to paradise if paradise is described by someone as 'having the means to move a terrifically large pile of anything'....if necessary. Wheels are optional on the load, btw.
    Actually the holy grail of tractors to ME is the ever elusive model 55 Massey Harris. Now a 55 would make this 44 Special look as anemic and weak as the 44 will do to the little model 30's you see me use here on the property continuously !! Well, think about it, the 44 is 98 cu in larger than the little 30 and the 55 is 105 cubic inches larger than the 44 Special. So yeah, it's almost an apple and oranges comparison. (-;
    No lives were lost in the making of this video, even though my own was a bit in jeopardy when the Missus figured out she might've been scammed a bit by the 'tire' story. LOL, Good thing for me that she's a good sport !! But anyway, look at it this way...we will be resurrecting an otherwise dead relic and giving it a chance at a new life far away from the abuses it has suffered getting to its current deteriorated condition !! Yes, this is going to be for the good of all mankind...and you will see it right here on Tractorman44 !!

    Any 44 or 44 Special can easily go down as one of the most durable, reliable tractors of all time. The 44-6 was a nice tractor to operate, but not nearly the torque of a 44 or Special. We had a 1950 44 Gas Standard when I was growing up, and then augmented it with a 30 Standard. Then a 44 Special Gas row crop wide front which we converted to narrow front so we could use it on our Haybine. Just masterfully crafted tractors.

      I agree the MH 44 series tractors were the true workhorse of the line. The sixes had a shorter stroke and smaller bore resulting in less displacement, so the huge bore and long stroke of the 4 gave it great lugging power and torque. We ran two 44's a 101 Super and a 101 Junior. I have the Super and my brother has the Jr and one of the 44's, the other 44 got away, but at least a buddy of mine has it. MH had it together for sure through the period of time between the late '30's through the mid '50's. Just for what it's worth....the 44 in my username is because it's my all time favorite tractor!!

      I ran with only a hand crank winch for many years Nelson. Then I installed an 8000 pound Ramsey and had solenoid after solenoid burn out. It needed something every time I used it. So I bought the cheap Harbor Freight APEX 12,000 for $299 with a 20% coupon off that a couple years ago. For the first time I went with the synthetic rope and so far it has been great !! Gotta keep it protected from rough edges though, but wind it good the first time and it seems to wind on the reel perfectly after the first 'stretching in'. By now a 3/8 cable would have some burrs hanging off and be stretched and winding badly. BTDT. Make sure you snag a couple old snatch blocks for loading too. Here's why, but you gotta look closely: th-cam.com/video/vx6a6a0OJmo/w-d-xo.html Thank you my friend for such a fine comment !!

    going on with part looking & instead tractor buying & coming home with. My wife
    when I say I'm getting or already bought & coming home with / all she dislikes

    Nice save. I personally never ran a massey harris, but had a neighbor that farmed with 2 444 and a 33. Another neighbor had a 101 Sr. Liked the deep rick sound their exhaust made. Funny. Back when i was a kid, I could tell which neighbor was working by the engine sound. AC's, Olivers, Farmalls, Fords or the Massey's. We had 2 cyl. JD's

      I know EXACTLY what you mean Alan. They all have their distinctive engine sound for sure !! The six bangers in the Supers and Seniors sound a lot like the Oliver sixes though. Mellow as can be compared to the bellicose note of the 44's exhaust when running a straight pipe. All of them sound much more mean if you let 'em breathe !! There wasn't a lot of JD around this area, but you wanna talk about a 'distinctive' sound....those are the guilty ones !! LOL

    I grew up on a 40 cow 🐄 dairy farm in Western NY. We farmed with a Massey Harris, 44, 30 and a Mustang.
    I can still hear the whine of the square cut gears. If you have a massey don’t let that whine scare you. The gears were square cut for improved strength. That’s why they make that whining sound.
    It’s been a lot of years since I’ve done farm work with a MH tractor. But I do have a MH 44 that sees some use on my 60 acre hunting/camping land.
    I picked it up at auction for $700. Someone had repowered it with a 283 v8 Chevy. With power steering, 3 pt, hydraulics and pto it’s quite a useful tractor. It has a standard 3 spd GM gearbox between the engine and tractor transmission. It allows me to underdrive the tractor trans to turn higher rpm’s while keeping my ground speed normal. The little 283 will produce 195 hp. But I try not to spin the tractor transmission input shaft faster than it was originally designed for. At least not when I’m working it for long periods or using the pto.
    I’m not a fan of putting v8’s in tractors. But I bought it that way and I have no intention of changing it.
    Great information in your video. Thumbs up for saving a MH 44 Special.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We came up in similar ways. We ran a Holstein dairy herd about the same size as well, but also raised hogs and beef cattle. We had two 44's, one with the MH loader, a 101 Super that I still have, and a 101 Jr my brother still has and the old model 25 which was the first real modern-ish tractor our granddad bought. Well, that and an old cross motor Case. The Case and the 44 loader are the only ones we don't still have. My brother has the other 44 and a friend owns the loader tractor.
      That 44 with the 283 sounds kinda unique but useful as you describe. With the stacked trannys I bet it's stretched out a little. But as long as its useful, heck fire I'd use it too !! Thanks for the cool and detailed comment. I appreciate the time you've taken to watch and reply.

    The top link for the MH was called a yolk for the power shaft to go through.
    On the farm by the time I come along we also had: 33 tricycle with live power and Super Six all hydraulic loader, 33 diesel with wide front and live power and a 55 with a wide front.

      @@Mopar-Pioneer No, the 55 has a 382 cu in 4 banger. It is a real beast. The regular 44 had a 260 four, the 44 Special swelled to a 277 four along with the 444-4 then the 44-6 had the flathead 6 along with a 101 starting in '39 then continuing with the 101 Super in the early 40's. Then the final in the series ended up with a 101 Senior. The 44-6 and the 101 Senior had the same Continental engine and the 101 and 101 Super had the Chrysler industrial. The 101 Juniors started with the 124 -4, changed to a 140-4 early on then ended production with a 160-4 when the MH 30 entered the scene with the same 160-4 and 5 speed tranny. Btw, is there much value to a '64 Polara four door? I've been gifted a rough one owner non-runner but haven't picked it up yet. It's fitted with the 318 wide block with automatic tranny. Not the original engine I think.

    Wasn't the Massey Harris built in Racine? Amazingly, the engine is the exact same size as a DC Case and Case had to increase the bore to 4 inch aluminum pistons, put in a foot clutch and slap on a better seat in 53 and 54 in order to try to keep up with the competition.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, MH had a Racine factory plus another one in Canada. I believe the DC had the same cubic inches as the standard 44 at 260 cu. in. The Special, like this one has 17 more at 277 cu in. I agree the SC and DC Cases were good tractors, but they hung onto the hand clutch a bit too long. Most of them I've seen in this area has the big steering arm that sticks out front broken and repaired. I guess they'd smack a tree or a fencepost at the end of the fields while turning.

    • @don66hotrod94

      @@tractorman4461 In regard to engine size, the 3 7/8 cast piston engines were 260 cubic inches. The 4 inch aluminum factory equipped engines were 277 cubic inches and the 4 1/16 M and W equipped engines were 284 cubic inches. Case built too many D series tractors and had to "superize" them to get rid of them. IMHO the biggest weakness was having only 4 speeds. The Massey-Harris factory in Racine was the old JI Case Plow Works factory where Wallis tractors were made IIRC. Massey Harris were good tractors, there was a local dealer who sold a ton of them, but he didn't survive long as a MF dealer.

      @@don66hotrod94 Yes, I knew the 3 7/8 bore was the 260 on the 44, but I mistook what you said earlier and thought you meant they changed to the 4" aluminum to get the DC up TO the 260 cu in mark, meaning the DC had to have had a shorter stroke. My mistake. I'm not a big 'old' Case guy anyway so most all this is new input to me. Thanks again for the new wrinkles in the gray matter. Btw, my older brother has a 37 Challenger and a '37 Model 25 both of which still have the Wallis U-tube crankcase design. The 25 came from our farm and he traded for the Challenger years ago.

So I looked under rhe gas tank and saw the carburetor? It has a shotglass looking thing that is I believe the float? And no fuel was in it. So I took it apart because they built things awesome back then! Cleaned it out but I'm unsure of if there is a lever (like on a motorcycle) or something that I need to do to get fuel running into that glass float just under the fuel tank. The fuel line connectors sit just above the glass float and has a mesh screen in-between them. Also, there is a clutch pedal on the left and a wide pedal in the right which may or may not be the gas pedal? There is also some type of lever by the steering wheel that looks like is the actual throttle?
