Crusaders successfully established Kingdoms that lasted for centuries, I'd hardly say they failed.
They also completely removed the threat of Islamic invasion which was the reason for the Crusades to begin with, they were retaliatory

If you hide HUD, increase graphics to best settings, it's not that unplayable actually. It was simpler and easier to play. But, I loved technology tree, scholars, universities, economics etc of Empire Total War too.
