I took apart my 18v DeWalt drill and spread everything on a picnic table with a huge paper tablecloth. I labeled each grouping of parts as I went and meticulously serviced, cleaned, replaced worn parts and labeled the tablecloth for reassembly. Just before I could begin the repairs, my 2 year old Black Lab chased a squirrel out of the yard and dragged the table cloth with all of my parts across the lawn with him. My new DeWalt Drill cost me $179 and I’m still mowing over missing parts strewn throughout my lawn.
Kinda happy to see a channel like this. Looking at fixing something instead of saying it doesn't work anymore, throw it out. A good step towards less waste. Thanks for the content

for entertainment only not worth the effort nor time for most who don't have the tools, time, knowledge to do this kind of thing and plenty of used drills in the used marketplace that are customer returns can be had for around $50 or less in pristine like new condition.
I like this sort of thing too but I could just never justify sinking that much time into fixing up an obsolete NiCad drill. It's not a matter of usefulness at this point its a matter of pride and/or fun. I got three air impacts 1" and 1 1/2" that were gonna be chucked out when we moved in to a new yard. Worth about $1,000+ each, if they work. Didn't have my own - Worth repairing. Fixed 'em up, new vanes, new grease, new/fixed trigger assy's and repaired the fittings and off you go.
@Skodaman2 No, I needed to be more clear. If you already have a new dewalt lithium battery drill and want to convert an old one it is easy. They sell a thing that snaps into where the old NiCad battery was and then you just slide a new Dewalt Lithium battery on that. Only use charger for lithium batteries. If you don't have a new drill then cost of converter, battery, and charger might be a bad idea and to expensive.
Used one of these heavy beasts through my electrical apprenticeship. Affectionately referred to it as “The Wrist Breaker”. Drilling out 6” soffit can lights, if you weren’t prepared, it would take you for one hell of a ride.

Outstanding! It seems like you know this drill inside out - Dewalt . So many parts and their assembly could make the engineers who designed this dizzy! But you did it in a spectacular manner. Way to go!
Outstanding. So many parts. At least you have your video to refer to. I cringed when you put them all in the cleaner/degreaser. Very , very well done. New battery requirement is no surprize. Thanks for NOT having music.
I restored one of these! I love how the gearbox and brushes can be removed so easily. You can still get brushes for these, too! Trouble with mine was the torque ring was busted - the slip ring was so worn down from constant years of use that it only does drill and hammer mode.
I don't care what anyone says, the old dewalt drills xrp stuff is the best for reliability, I still use dewalt xrp dcd950 hammer drill and my dewalt dc825 impact driver on a daily basis at my job, I've been using them for many years, they always work and never die, I only had to replace one battery 5 years ago due to water damage. I used a dewalt dcd996 hammer drill from december 2017 till June 2018 and it died, somthing on a microchip board blew up while I was drill a 1inch pice of oak with a 3/8" drill bit that was fresh. I switched back to my trusty old dcd950 and never had an issue since. My old dc825 impact driver has never given any issues what so ever. Great restoration on this drill it looks like a dc925.
Considering that drill goes for 150 USD without the battery I think you got a great bargain, nice job, never realized how many little gears there was inside. Thanks for sharing!
I wonder if all battery powered drills are this hideously complicated inside when compared to their AC mains counterparts which seem to have very internal moving wheels? Those battery motors also look a lot more tricky to disassemble for repair than the AC mains powered motors!
150USD? You can get DCD996 for such money. Brushed motors belong to the 90s. BL is cheaper to produce and when well designed, it will outlast any kind of motor by massive margin. And they can be made waterproof.
I buy, sell, and trade power tools all the time. That thing was worth about $15usd before the restoration and about $30 afterwards. Those 18 volt dewalts are almost worthless considering they run on the old style Nicad batteries. Any one who wants more than 5 min of run time out of their batteries goes with a lithium ion. Go on eBay, you can get a brand new Dewalt dcd996 (top of two line, professional grade) drill for about $90. That drill is worth no where near $150 like you claim.
Three thumbs up. I admire the dedication and enthusiasm that I put to his restorations, I also restore objects and the emotion that feels to return them to life is not paid with anything. thanks to share with us your proyects. Best regards. Henry.

not a regular 18650....only the ones with high current discharge rate !! otherwise you might hear some noises and find yourself with a torch in your hand....but if you do it, please record it and post it
You cannot simply replace NiCd batteries with 18650 LiOn batteries. You'd need to install a battery management chip to regulate the batteries if you could even fit the 18650 into the housing designed for "D" sized NiCd. You'd also need to find a new charger because you can't charge 18650s on a NiCd charger. It's best just to replace the NiCd with new NiCds.
@@JonnyRicter I'm guessing the NiCd chargers would hardly ever damage the Li-Ion batteries considering the they had memory effect and all kinds of quirks, so Li-Ions should be fine. Buddy of mine did the Li-Ion conversion years ago and she's still chooching like crazy, batteries from old laptop batteries, still holding fine :) In the worst case you have more powerful batteries that will for sure last longer than the old NiCd junk of technology, no fire if you know what you're doing and you're not pushing it.
Emiliyan Yankov impossible. You cannot charge lithium batteries on a NiCd charger without destroying them and here is why. NiCd battery cells are 1.2v each and lithium cells are ~3.7v each, you cannot fully charge a 3.7v cell with a charger that is trying to fully charge a 1.2v cell....and that's just the beginning. Let's pretend the charger has the correct voltage now, the battery pack must have a BMS chip that is able to communicate with the charger because LiOn charge completely different then NiCd, they must charge the battery with constant current to near full, then slowly reduce current to a fraction of constant until the battery reaches full, all the while maintaining a constant and correct voltage (between ~4.2v to ~3.2v). Also, NiCd chargers float charge, meaning they constantly charge the battery cells to maintain full, if you do that to lithium it will explode. A lithium battery must be discharged and then recharged, it cannot be "topped of." Finally, lithium batteries reach a higher temperature when recharging than NiCd, so unless the NiCd charger has been altered, the heat detection circuit will trip and cause the charger to stop charging because it thinks the batteries are over heating. So like I said in my previous post, you cannot simply pull out old NiCds, throw in some LiOns, and be on your way, it's much more complicated than that and in most cases it's simply better to just replace the old NiCd batteries with new ones.
I have the exact same drill. When the original batteries died, I replaced them with DeWalt DC9180 lithium battery packs. Bought a 2 pack plus charger from Amazon. Advantage is they don't self discharge and can sit on my workbench for months ready to go when I need them.
My man how did you get the Chuck off? I can't get mine off for the life of me Edit: I got it off using the technique you used. Thanks for this video my drill is running better than ever!

I hate that when guys do demo's and just blab on. Talking's fine if it adds to the presentation. Well done!
Fantastic job! After your video I've purchased same used drill for 20$ and I'm going to restore it and upgrade battery with 5x21700 lithium ion cell's 4000mAh capacity for 21V fully charged. Thanks for your great work
Nice on the effort. I bought one used on Craigslist battery and charger barely used at all. $25 bucks... But, nice effort. I still support your channel you are very good at what you do. Yes, they are heavy for most jobs I use my small Snap On 7.2 volt screw driver much lighter.
I have that drill in a combo package with a 5-3/8" circular saw, a reciprocating saw, 2 batteries plus charger in a hard case. The Ni-Cd batteries are harder to find but DeWalt has an adaptor transitioning to the new Lithium-ion. That was an amazing successful restoration that AvE should watch!
You made this look way to easy. Great job making the video. I have a bad drill been kicking around. This makes me wanna try and take it apart. Just for the challenge.
I coulda used this a decade ago. Tossed that drill and have gone through 3 since. You are clearly a wizard with puzzles. And you also invented a new tool. The rapid file. Just need to attach your round file to a sawsall that doesnt oscillate and you can get it done as fast as it gets done in fast forward. Maybe oscillation will work but either way that musta been painful filing that socket 😂🏋️♂️
The hammer drill function sucks on those drills though. Its only useful when screwing while reaching 10’ away from your center of balance because it helps drive the screw home. Its also a good function if your a limp wristed guppy.
i took my 20v electric cordless Trimmer Apart - 300 pcs motor was SHOT !!!!!!! after putting 2 complaints to DEWALT nd a CASE # finally sent me a new one - Not worth replaceing MOTOR too Expensive
It looks like the same cells were returned to the battery assy. They must still be holding/taking a charge. But generally, NiCads suck. I never had a NiCad pack last more than a couple of years, even with careful charge-discharge cycles. I trashed all my old cordless tools for newer, Li-Ion powered tools. 4 years now and still on the original batteries.
@@RichardFallstich .. I've had very good luck with Ni-cads ... I'm on my third battery for the model OLDER than the one rebuilt here .. well over 20 years of use ... charge doesn't last near as long but plenty to work with ... I screwed down thousands of 4" long roofing screws 5 years ago .. still using that battery
It's amazing how much effort you put in to restore that drill. That restored one should cost as much as the new ones. Really enjoy watching those videos. Keep up the good work!
Nice job laying every part out. I have to say "Kudos" taking apart that transmission, I won't do that even tho I have three of these XRPs...You are brave or experienced. Kudos.
For christ sake if pepole are going to trash talk a tool get your facts straight The type 1 units are no longer available from Dewalt if you're lucky enough to still have them there still running brushes will probably need replacing at some point yes. batteries will corrode. But it's a beast. Got SDS drills that have been battered from new still going strong one of wich mixes up plaster in a 16L tubs, sometimes upto 8 buckets a day.. The others ofter have to drill 4x2 timber or cast concrete etc I've Never replaced brushes in not one of them.. Why because there built to last. The new model power tools from almost every manufacturer are all trash, give them around 2 years max heavy use... They burn out battery's cost a fortune to replace. Great upload fantastic work. 👍 👍
True that... I have one of these DeWALT cordless drills, it has been abused but its still going strong. Knocked it off a roof once and it only had some scuffs on it. Mixed plaster with it. Drilled into concrete. Used a 2 foot long bit to bore into a fence post length ways. Put up more plasterboard than I like to think about. Built many a fence and shed, no trouble driving 5 inch screws in right to the scrotum. One of the 2 batteries it came with has started to get a bit weak but that is after almost 10 years of abuse and the other one is still doing fine... a replacement battery isn't a mint on eBay either if the mood took me to replace it.
Nicely done. Don't complain about weight! At least you got great product from times when Dewalt used to make things using higher quality materials. That is high quality drill especially because of gears made out of metal, todays drills have plastic gears. I'd always go for metal gears and bit more weight because of durability than plastic.
Very impressive restoration project, it was very rewarding watching you bring this drill back to life. With that being said, people watching this might want to think about buying Ridgid brand…all Ridgid tools, too include BATTERIES, are guaranteed for life! I started switching over all my tools about 10 years ago and have never looked back. Nice work!
This is fascinating.! I come from Denmark and I am born early 80’ My dad always rebuild all his stuff because we diddent have so much money and tools was realy expensive.! He still has tools from back then and he is realy good at doing stuff like you do.! Even today if we go to new shops like Bauhaus over the German borders he is like.! Wow have you seen all the tools you can buy today.! I like the idea of rebuild stuff and use again.! Nowadays we throw way to much stuff away that still can be used again! Realy nice work you do 😬👍
Weather it's dewalt , makita Bosch or milwalkee it's the tool holding it that counts , dewalt is fine if it does what it's designed to do and the tool on the end of it knows what they are doing.
The electronics have a special coating so it works in the rain. The gears are metal. It is 3 speed for a wide and accurate torque range and consistency of driving screws from a number 6 drywall to 2 inch hole saws. The plastic is nylon glass reinforce. The chuck is all metal with carbide jaws. The brushes are easily replaceable. That drill can do most of the work to build a house and and then some. I have both the 18 and 20 volt versions of this drill. It will break your wrist if you are not braced for a bind. It is a beast made in the US and retailed over $300. It is not a DYI drill.
What an astoundingly good video. Watched it w/o sound. Camera angles perfect. Attention to detail: perfect. Quality of rebuild: excellent. Very, very well done.
Please do a restoration for 50s or 60s or 70s or 80s or 90s fan because it’s very nostalgic and reminds us how much products was a good quality and how much they were serviceable hopefully someone notices that and bring them back just like Sony did when they rereleased the play station one
I wanted to clean some of the gunk out of my drill last year and had the planetary gear set fall out onto the floor. Spent 3 hours getting it back together because I didn't think to look up how it should go.
I have had some success rejuvenating nicad cells. Once you have opened up the battery so that you can get electrical access at an individual cell level, then I charge the whole battery and wait a few days to see which cells self-discharge. I then zap those cells (or maybe all the cells), one at a time. I charge a physically large capacitor of maybe 10,000 UF to - say - 5 volts with a small current - say 1 amp, then connect it across a nicad cell, with correct polarity i.e... positive on cap to positive on cell. The high peak discharge current from the cap into the nicad cell will tend to burn off the fine wires that build up within the cell between positive and negative leaving a more usable cell. You don't need to remove the individual cells to do this, provided you can get access to each cell, one at a time. In principle you could do the same thing with - say 30 volts on the cap to zap the whole battery in one go but I prefer to work at lower energy levels. Even doing it one cell at a time you should expect a fair size spark when you connect cap to cell.
I have watched many of your videos on your channel and I think you do awesome work! Very well done sir. btw: I also like to restore tools. it is an awesome feeling to look at it after the restoration is done :)

Li -ion is the technology that almost nowaday power tool company using, the china li-ion cell is not expensive, remember buy the cell for power tool, about 2000mAh ,15A, don't use the cell for laptop
throw away tools these days, dont break the golden rule "if it aint broke dont fix it" if you open it up something will go flying or some brittle plastic will break... run er till she lets the smoke out then be excited to get a new drill amazing what they have improved on in just the past few years

No sé cuánto tiempo pasaste haciendo el vídeo, pero el tiempo que dura es poco por su trabajo y enseñanza, increíble...
I took my drill apart and now I just have 100 pieces.
hahahahhaha!
Need to take a video when disassembling so you know how to put it back together!
Always take pics while disassembling lol learned that the hard way
i took my 20v electric cordless Trimmer Apart - 300 pcs
motor was SHOT !!!!!!! after putting 2 complaints to DEWALT nd a CASE # finally sent me a new one - Not worth replaceing MOTOR too Expensive
You should only have 99 pieces. Lol
Terima kasih sdh memuat video perbaikan mesin bor dan saya semakin yakin mesin bor dewalt sangat bagus dan kokoh...💪💪👍
I'm surprised you didn't order JUST the cells and rebuild the battery :)
or just order another drill
Or just paid someone to fix anything you'd need a drill for
or just buy new thing instead of fixing it with drill
Kudos.
Oh thank you so much!
.. I always have parts left over when I do this ...It works Every time!!
😂
that's great you can make 3 drills out of 2 :D
Wow that’s great to see something restored in today’s throw away society. Good work I would have been lost figuring where all the parts go
For christ sake if pepole are going to trash talk a tool get your facts straight
The type 1 units are no longer available from Dewalt if you're lucky enough to still have them there still running brushes will probably need replacing at some point yes. batteries will corrode.
I have 2 old dewaits and there are awesome
You sure have done a few of these drills. No one would attempt this job with out some failures. Excellent rebuild.
Wow, thanks!
Just wanted to say: "You are a lucky man". But no, the batteries are dead)). excellent restoration.
Thank you!
You are okay, boy. Or is it time to call the rehabilitation center?
Let Me tell You Sr. You are amazing. Thank You for the video. I really enjoy seen people with the level of care that You took to restore that drill.
Wow, did know there were so many planetary gear sets inside. Nice rebuild job there. Thumbs Up!
Thank you!
Nicely done. Don't complain about weight! At least you got great product from times when Dewalt used to make things using higher quality materials. That is high quality drill especially because of gears made out of metal, todays drills have plastic gears. I'd always go for metal gears and bit more weight because of durability than plastic.
This level of work should be applauded. Great job!
From someone not easily impressed
I'm impressed
Thank you!
Alot more pieces than i thought old drills had.... no wonder they cost so much
who are you ? you are not a normal human. Awesome work and I took 3 days just to change the chuck for a working drill. Lots of respect sir.
WOW. That was amazing with all the small pieces. Enjoyed watching, thanks.
Nice work!
I can’t believe you got that back together! Well done.
Great job. I have this same exact model and it is old and rough looking. I got it new over 12 years ago. Still works.
Great job! You took it apart and it ended up being the battery.😀
That battery wouldn't have done much, if he hadn't repaired the machine though
Michael yes I was just playing.😀
@@Michael-Archonaeus he actually didn't repair or replace anything in the drill, he just cleaned it.
@@Scrippture not so sure about that, i noticed a bent bolt looking part that somehow became longer and blacker later on o.o?
This is fascinating.! I come from Denmark and I am born early 80’ My dad always rebuild all his stuff because we diddent have so much money and tools was realy expensive.! He still has tools from back then and he is realy good at doing stuff like you do.! Even today if we go to new shops like Bauhaus over the German borders he is like.! Wow have you seen all the tools you can buy today.! I like the idea of rebuild stuff and use again.! Nowadays we throw way to much stuff away that still can be used again! Realy nice work you do 😬👍
I just realized why Dewalt tools are expensive
Zana Hasan why
Why
Zana Hasan Dewalt tools are junk. Buy Bosch, Makita, Milwaukee, or Hitachi and never look back
Weather it's dewalt , makita Bosch or milwalkee it's the tool holding it that counts , dewalt is fine if it does what it's designed to do and the tool on the end of it knows what they are doing.
It is not a DYI drill.
my dewalt drill stoped working I will open it and give it a check over tmrw
You should check the battery pack and check the carbon brush set.
it's was working I been traviling for 1 year and wen I got bk and tryed to use it was not working both battery charge but nothing
My patience levels would have seen it hit the wall.
Same, I'd kill myself trying to keep track of all the parts.
I wanted to clean some of the gunk out of my drill last year and had the planetary gear set fall out onto the floor. Spent 3 hours getting it back together because I didn't think to look up how it should go.
ian scott 😂
🤯🤬😤🤔
A nightmare
Thank you so much for the solution.
I have watched many of your videos on your channel and I think you do awesome work! Very well done sir. btw: I also like to restore tools. it is an awesome feeling to look at it after the restoration is done :)
At 2:38 you can see the gear lube is new. It's a fake restoration.
Вот что значит не рукажоп! Красавчик 👍🏻 приятно было посмотреть 😉
Great job! Now we are waiting for a project to replace NiCd battery to Li-ion.
just buy the adaptor and use 20v li-ion battery from dewalt
@@bro589 it's too easy. We are not looking for the easy way.
KBAC The drill is an out dated piece of shit anyway. The fact that it’s nicd technology only adds to it.
The best restoration I have ever seen. Excellent job!
Thank you so much!
Incredible restore! My favorite! In awe of how much there was and how well you restored it. Also thanks for showing how some of the parts go together by pointing them out 🙂
You're welcome! thanks for watching and comments.
Ilyenkor szokott maradni nálam a végén pár alátét, stift stb. Ez szép munka, gratulation.
Best combi drill Dewalt ever made if you see one for sale grab it as you can still get all the parts
Thank you!
acespark1 it’s way underpowered by today’s standards.
Its amazing enuff he can restore these items to a pristine condition, but he remembers how to put it all back once its disassembled!
Good work!
Like from Russia!
Somewhere somebody at Dewalt factory just lost his job! Because you restored that drill and not buy one new :)))) Thats we call RECYCLE!
But it should call REPAIR!
@@terrortorn it's not even repair. Strip down, clean, replace grease and a new battery. That's more like refurbish.
is it worth saving a $50 drill though... I do appreciate all the hard work that went into restoring it though... I don't know that it's worth 50$ but never the less i do appreciate it....
Now $50= $200.
What was the chemical you used to clean the outside of the drill with. Baking soda???
Excellent! Now fix mine.
Lol
You are very skilled. I can't take apart a pb&j without missing parts
Much like my routine. Take out of case and with a damp cloth clean the yellow bits, back into the case. Job done.
After all that work to restore the original drill, please use the original battery case and replace the cells with the new ones.
why ? you buying it?
Хорошо у них придумано, блоками. Щелк, щелк и разобрал. Очень интересен список химии, которым он все делает - некоторые средства непонятны совсем.... ЛАЙК!
I’ve always wanted to know what was in there. What skill! You must have done this a few times.
What did you use for cleaning. some kinda of powder. Then you poured something on the one piece. Used a toothbrush to scrub it?
Lastly what grease do you use to lube everything back up?
More than likely...baking soda
These videos are so satisfying to watch kind of relaxing lol
Thank you. I got a whole dewalt set someone threw out. Getting new batteries and now I'm gonna refurbish them. What did you use to clean the parts? What kind of grease is that? Thank you so much
Good lesson learned: I am to never attempt to disassemble a cordless drill... I'd never get it back together....thanks for the video
I took apart an old engine and put it back together from TH-cam videos. Just take pictures of every step so you know how to put everything back together.
What is that you add to water when cleaning body ? Washing powder, baking soda or somethong else ?
Want to know as well, bought some drity drill and I want it to shine again.
un trabajo muy bien hecho, felicitaciones Orlando Vro
Ok. Used drill in excellent shape? Ok. I’ll give you $25. Nice job thought. I admire your ability.
I like it. I think You can use li-ion cell to replace ni-cd cell in the battery, you will have long time to use with it
Yes. DeWalt actually made lithium ion batteries for the older platform but they were very short lived in and very expensive.
Li -ion is the technology that almost nowaday power tool company using, the china li-ion cell is not expensive, remember buy the cell for power tool, about 2000mAh ,15A, don't use the cell for laptop
Excellent restoration video, work of art.
Many thanks!
Ace job mate, I need to strip mine down just for a clean and re-grease, it's seen a lot of work. 👍👍
throw away tools these days, dont break the golden rule "if it aint broke dont fix it" if you open it up something will go flying or some brittle plastic will break... run er till she lets the smoke out then be excited to get a new drill amazing what they have improved on in just the past few years
@@AndrewBrowner - Like Lithium Ion batteries and better torque ratios with Dewalt since its still a brand that is decent. Refurbishing this drill with these old batteries is kinda pointless but otherwise still interesting to watch.
I was amazed how many parts are inside that drill.
Proof that with some know how not everything is disposable.
