      A white version of this would be the difference between these two sentences.
      "Fucking 'A', man!"
      "Fucking a man"
      😉 Very different meanings based on which part of the sentence gets stressed.

    Tonal response is inflectional,as seen here.
    I do this very same thing..
    Culturally spoken,this is Our language. HOW we "communicate ,without
    saying too much " is a skill folks learned from the early days of slavery to maintain connectivity and "privacy".

      We brought this practice, this normative aspect of communication among us, into enslavement with us; no different than the plethora of other abilities. We used them to help us through the fire but they were not created in or because of it.

    I'm a chronically online Australian English speaker. I know the two meanings of each set, but I don't know which was which. Australian can also be quite tonal but the way I would change my enunciation to communicate the same nuance in meaning is completely different to this video, and that is so interesting to me.

    We have not made it easy for them...

    • @berenicesaquet1870
      @berenicesaquet1870 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      English is my second language, not AAE or gulla geeche or other creole based English no matter how 'connected' they first seem to English ( despite having a grammar of their own).
      nothing too feel bad about. those are different language. and you have not make it 'hard' you see. you are not in this picture.
      it's like if you said about a video on occidental Yiddish ( for example ) that 'germans made it harder for non germans to learn' no sense.

    This is why, in linguistics, we define phonetic concatenations to semantically define a noun, action, or general
    part of a sentence to differentiate between the ambiguities that might arise when speaking in any language.

    So that’s what the word for that is! I am very far removed from speaking AAVE but I think I understood at least the left side pretty well. I’ve noticed that some people in my life just can’t understand or distinguish ‘mmm’s or other similar not-words by their intonation and it always surprises me when they don’t get it. Have no idea if this is an actual example of language evolving or just preference but it’s really cool!

    We can let things be people. If people do not understand our language that is natural and doesn't require a free education.
    We shouldn't seek the validation of understanding, it does a lot to undermine the value of our productions.
    This is the language we are teased in school for but also used by others in marketing.

    Holy f-ing algorithms, TH-cam just LOVES showing me old videos... That's okay because I'll keep watching them. I've accepted that however many I thought I saw, I still haven't seen them all from this channel... Now, on to responding to the actual video!
    Tone, intonation and stress are so important for human interaction... I'm convinced it's 90% of why things can get so heated online... My brother and sister once didn't speak to each other for a year after he was bad at using word choice to convey tone in an email. It never occurred to me, before watching this channel, that certain ethnic groups might use that particular communication tool more than others. If this is related to use of tone in some African languages, I wonder if Chinese first English speakers have different tonal inflections, too, since Mandarin is also tonal?
    This was a great demonstration.

  • @jaydengreenberg9618
    @jaydengreenberg9618 ปีที่แล้ว

    I thought this was a female thing since I often observe women in general using more intonation than men regardless of race, expecially younger ones.
    Australians also seem use alot of intonation.
    But intonation in general is a part of English in general, as well as most languages. Almost all english speakers will use intonation differently on questions and when putting emphasis on certain words, that doesn't make it tonal. Tonal would be an individual word having a different meaning if the intonation is different, not the meaning of a sentence.
