Brings back memories of your earlier days when you start off the video with the farm animals and chores, it's a personal touch that makes it more than just a building channel.
Yes I remember when Al did all the filming on his own ,that was when Gina didn't want to be filmed. Gosh I've been watching for many many year's now. Best wishes from England UK 🇬🇧
@@caroledwards3465 Yes, that's what I was thinking when I posted this.
They still do that quite often just not every time
@@driver1421 Life evolves, embrace it!!!
That barn is all but buttoned up! Good job Al and Gina! I think you should name the chicken coop in honor of CWC! You made a good point on putting up the wire fencing at the airflow points! Thank you!
I would think it would be a good idea to put that mesh along all of that 2" opening throughout the barn.
oh so close to the finish of that barn Good luck
Al and Gina, love the build so much! Many have no idea! Al you’re killing me bud! Get a baker scaffold at harbor freight or tractor supply for under 200.00. You can roll around those barns and put away the ladder! I have a 13 foot tall garage was like my right hand during the build and even now I won’t take it down, to handy!!! Love the tin inside so nice!!!
Goooood afternoon Al, Gina, Olivia, and Lumnah Acres friends😊 Ariel and Eric at Simple Living Alaska, started heating their chicken coop in the winter after moving further north, and the egg production has been going really well, better than expected. It may be safe to say that it is not just the hours of light chickens get in the winter, but also the temperatures they are exposed to that affects egg production.
Hi Forrest
Love Ariel & Eric. They have an amazing channel 😊
@@annettegregg8654 Hi Annette!😄
Good evening Forrest! 👍🏾🤩🐶
@@TheKamakuraGardener Hi Robert!
When it comes to designing space for the outdoor chicken run, count your birds and for each one about 8 square feet is good. I don't know if hawks and other predatory birds are a problem there, so I would recommend surrounding the run on all sides and in the ground with tight mesh wire. What was used for the vent screen is a good type. Just remember to dig down 6 to 8 inches and put the wire there facing outwards in the shape of a backwards L .
Hi.... Thanks you for showing your video homestead bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋👍👍👍
When you showed that pile of logs i was half expecting to see Figaro standing up there. I miss that little guy.
New clean barns are so cool looking!! That will change😃.
I know absolutely nothing about raising chickens, but your coop looks good. The ceiling is a really good idea, and I like the use of your “waste” lumber when you built the coop.
Miss the old coop with all the license plates that several of us sent in (me being one) It was fun to be a part of it!
Miss seeing the animal chores and interacting and cooking, along with the construction. The animals for the daily grounding and then your construction for learning, improving and moving forward and then the food prep preserving, more learning, and last, the meal- reminding us of what all this is for. Was very inspiring.❤️
Did you take anything from your last place? Are you selling or renting your old place?
Miss your greeting " gooood morning modern steaders" what happened to stop you from using your cheerful iconic greeting to us?
God bless❤️
They still own previous property, that's where they were packaging the coffee in original coffee sales videos.
Lol its a youtube farming channel now, farming clicks😂 they don’t have time for actual homesteading anymore.
@@teenanrelshensari4033 thanks for your reply. They have always been a farming channel
Great idea with the hardware cloth Al. You are so right, we thought our new winter chicken coop was secure and a weasel got in and killed two of our hens. Found the spot he came in and it was just a little slit just smaller than an inch. Lesson learned. Fortunately, (that has been a few years back) we haven't had any more trouble. When you live in the middle of timber and creeks/ponds, you have all sorts of critters running around. We live in an area much like yours. We love it, however, when making homes for our animals, we have to be mindful of other critters around too.
Hardware cloth all around the building would be nice insurance. For now and future additions
Good morning Lumnah Family. Definitely looking more and more like a prison build than a barn. Looking forward to seeing what it looks like when it is finished. Chickens are supposed to get a break during the winter months from egg priduction. So many people have lost connection with the balance of nature. Take care and have a blessed day. 🍀
Blessings,
Teresa 🦉
I love the look of the new "chicken palace". This will be a great location for raising the baby chicks. Al, you never look like you don't enjoy doing something. That surprised me when you said you didn't like doing dry wall. LOL. Does anybody like doing dry wall? Thanks for sharing the coop build....until Thursday, have a Blessed day.
Gina's getting spring fever! My bullfrogs and peepers have started waking up. We had a warm up here and I sure do hope it stays. They were predicting a bad snowfall this year for us but we've only had about 6 inch in one storm. God bless all y'all.
Good morning Lumnah family. 9 Degrees is cold. Barn is looking good. Those lifts are a big help for over your head work. Your getting closer to having the barn done. Thanks for another great video.
Gooooood Morning Gene. I’m hoping we don’t see that cold weather but I’m betting we will
Spring has sprung here in the south. My trees are leafing out and my maple tree is blooming and my bees are loving life again. Thank God winter is over. Great looking barn.
Good afternoon Lumnah family from a cloudy Pacific NW. Good afternoon viewers! Just got a whole bean "In the Woods!" It's delicious! I only like dark roast guys. Your friend does a great job! I agree with you that snow squeaks when it's really cold out! Everything sounds different. Putting up a ceiling in the chicken coop room, nice, it'll keep the chicken dust out of the rafters mostly. Whoa, what was those lights across the sky? Do you have a telescope recording the night sky? I think you are so smart to put that hard cloth up too! A hair cut in winter? That light looks great. Showing the chickens at the current coop was nice to see. Thanks for this video Lumnah family!
@@4Classie It's New *Yolk* City!!!
The 3 smaller doors in the barn…how will you seal the wood or finish them on the inside?
There are actually 4.
Al, I can understand the chicken coup area being totally enclosed, with full=height walls, but why in the cow and pig areas? I like the galvanized walls because pressure-cleaning excrement will be better. Will you silicone-caulk the open areas between the wall panels and the floor to protect the wood framing on the concrete? This is in no way a criticism! I just would like to understand your reasoning.
He has stated Numerous times that when it STOPS freezing he’s gonna do that, chill out
It's a coop not a coup! Completely different things, please use a dictionary.
Hello. Um , i have a good tip . Al , i have noticed that you don’t use a drill to drive in hook 🪝 screw . If you use a drill & put it in the vise of the drill it will make your hands happy! Keep up the great videos. May God bless everyone!!!
Nice to see the animals! Very pleased your coffee announcement was from the harvest house living area; Gina has put things on the walls !!! Yeah!
I'm a little surprised you don't have or are using a portable heater such as one hooked up to a propane tank. We have one that heats up and blows the results out to the space and it does an amazing job of taking the edge off a cold room.
@@4Classie Well when we do it, we run it for a while then shut it off for filming. I don't know what type the were considering or already had but heating the place for a bit then start working and filming would be easy enough.

Good morning. The inside coop will be a very productive space. I love all the uses you have planned. Thanks for the info on the chicken door to the outside. I was curious about that. Loved seeing the chickens current coop again.
have you thought of putting an I beam in the roof with an electric hoist for any lifting stuff in the barn? you could also add storage in the roof accessible by the hoist or ladder. i also think you should remove a few of the roofing panels and replace them with polycarbonate versions for natural light.
We have the pole on the outside of the barn if we need to lift anything heavy bit we also have the tractors for that too
@@LumnahAcres i was thinking for lifting in the barn also.
Those roof trusses don't look strong enough to support anything like that and plastic goes hard and brittle after a time. There are some things you shouldn't make out of plastic.
@@derekbarratt the roof trusses individually but when you spread the load over multiple trusses with a beam, they will hold a roof up. or snow and wind loads, so a few bags of grain hoisted into the rafters, no worries. as for plastics, if they are UV treated they last a long time. like on almost every fighter since the 1960's. the older roofing plastics weren't treated well so fail like that. modern ones will still eventually go there just as tin will rust. the thicker sheets last longer just like the steel.
I must admit that I didn't like the look of those trusses the moment I saw them. They seemed far too flimsey. In England we don't have much home grown wood. Henry the 8th saw to that when he had everything cut down to make ships. Most of our wood now arrives from somewhere where the trees grow the quickest and are sheathed in plastic, (to retain the moisture and prevent distortion) so we have a lot of shrinkage and twisting as they dry out despite being kiln dried.
Both Al and Gina are now almost middle aged and wont want to be replacing roofing sheets when they are in their seventies.
Nice hammer drill. You have done a great job on this barn.

That's ok you don't have 12 foot use what you have that will save you some money going to get more lumber.

Good morning Sam!

Al looking south out the barn doors there is a tall pyramid like mountain in the distance. Do you know the name of it and how far away it might be?
You had a shot of the water nozzle with the chickens clip, the question I've had, I assume that the shut off valve itself is below the frost line, what happens to the water that is above the valve? Is there an internal drain so the water level drops down after you shut the flow off? It can't just sit in the pipe because it would freeze and then you wouldn't get any water making the whole idea useless. Are you planning to build an egg laying box in the end wall like you have in the coop in the field?
that's called a frost proof yard hydrant and the pipe goes about 5 feet below grade so no freezing. It drains into gravel each time it's shut off.
Al you have switch plates on in the barn, but you never put the switch plates on in your house. 😳🤣
Good morning Lumnah's that barn is wonderful! Love watching it all coming together! God bless y'all!
Hi Al, Gina. NIce work there Al not a quick job putting the tin on the top but it looks good.
The animals will be happy when they get in there. Take care happy family.
How about putting a solar-powered vent fan in the outside wall of the chicken coop. That will pull the dust to the outside. You should also plumb a water line into the coop that can pull from an outside tank or the main water supply. If you plumb in a float valve that will auto top off the water as the level drops it will cut a chore out of your day. Think of how a toilet keeps the water level filled.
Man, those chickens are going to have a 5 star , hotel !!! I LOVE YOU GUYS !!!! 🥰🥰🥰

Morning al and gina, are you going to put 2 big fans up in middle of barn to keep air circulating and to help keep barn cool during summer? I know here in Maine most barns have a couple fans to help keep cool in summer and helps move the barn smells out some. Just a idea to think about while still building. Barn looks great. Much respect from central Maine
During Summer no animals will be in barn , also they are able to open 6 doors!!!! Have you not noticed?
@@tonygrimes13 actually yes but even in winter they have fans going to circulate the air .HAVE YOU NOTICED???????
Helped a neighbor rebuild a new barn after loosing the old one to a tornado. He had the hardware for the doors but was concerned that it would get bent in a big storm. Bought a ton of construction sand, used feed bags (plastic/nylon), and burlap bags. Made the burlap bags smaller by my wife. Resized the feed bags with a heat sealer. Put 50-60 pounds in each bag and sealed both the inner feed bag and sewed the open end of the burlap bag. They went at the bottom of the big doors to make a seal and provide extra support. His children were in ag progress program raising projects. The bags helped seal openings down by the ground. One thing he did in the chicken area was put down a wood floor at the interior wall. Chicks tended to use this area in colder weather and the farmer claimed better yields. Just an idea.
Good Morning! Looking good Al and Gina. The barn is really coming along, the chickens should enjoy their new home!

Ventilation covered in video, did you not hear?
One homesteading utuber ended up with chick eating rats then had to retro fit thier chicken brooding and other barn areas. So, so much better to recognize up front that even in the best neighborhoods and barns that small predators can be a problem for both live stock and feed.
@@4Classie Long story short, my sister got 2 chicks, my father build a large 5 sided coop area, and 2 chicks morphed into many chicks 'cause you got 10 free chicks (Cornish crosses) with every 5 pounds of chick feed. We were not farm based and despite our caging, something(s) began to eat through the chicken population. Like Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny, one night my father went racing out in his pj's, long handled rake (?), and flashlight then kneeled to look under the coop only to be looking at the back end of a partially raised tail of the biggest skunk he had ever seen. Because of the coop, it couldn't adequately raise its tail while racing forward, my father racing backward over the rake handle, and the flashlight going every which way which only incentived the skunk to move faster towards his breach in the fencing.
