Robert Smith's personal favourite is the cover recorded by American alternative rock band Dinosaur Jr (...) The band's frontman J Mascis explained, "We recorded it for a compilation album, but when we finished it we liked it so much we didn't want to give it to them." Smith said, "J. Mascis sent me a cassette, and it was so passionate. It was fantastic. I've never had such a visceral reaction to a cover version before or since," and even said the cover has "influenced how we play it live".
Hey, this is my favorite cover of Just Like Heaven. I am a huge Cure fan, and though I agree that many people who cover The Cure do a very crappy job, this song is not one of them. If it sounded exactly like when The Cure does it, then it wouldn't be a good cover. Covers are supposed to be different, the band covering a song should twist it with their own sound. Kay?
Ah, to the haters, someday you'll grow up to find that the world is not all sweetness and light and pretty dress-up bands. To each his own--if humor and passion isn't your thing, so be it. This is the shit. Period.
Dinoesaur JR doing The Cure. This couldn't be more perfect! And what I like most of all is how they've taken the song and really made it their own, instead of just porting the song. Some serious killer wah action going on too!
this live version of just like heaven is one of my favorite ones ever. Dinosaur Jr in my opinion made their version way better than the original. i watch this video almost every day. rock on
OMFG incredible cover of one of the best rock songs ever written. When two things as awesome as this song and this band happen at once, good things are bound to happen.

the absolute best cover of this fantastic song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
I'm a huge fan of The Cure and Dinosaur JR. This video is the fusion between these two groups ! GREAT Great right foot on the Wah !!! I'm going to see that live in Luxembourg the 25/08!
@Lemonhead86 the best part of your statement is "i liked a band called Dinosaur Jr ".......yes in concert there is a band playing...but all his music is recorded and performed by him and him only.. J.Masics IS Dinosaur Jr..
Totally agrred with that. in my opinion the best cover ever. D ino jr put a lot of the bands formula for not make a poor copy of the original song, like always the band do.
i was talking to a friend and i said i liked a band called Dinosaur Jr and he burst out laughing at the name. He has no idea what a fantastic band he's missing out on. DINOSAUR FUCKING KICKS ASSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!
Just got back from seeing them in Oxford. Wow, what a surprise that as a last encore they covered one of my favourite Cure songs... As memo8774 said, so cool to have Lou back with them, it's been a long time since we've been together in the same room ;-)
That's the point. They covered this song years ago - way before Kurt Cobain etc. Note the similarities, the Fender Jaguar, the Rickenbacker Bass - almost as if Nirvana copied them.
The whole reason of doing a *COVER* is to recompose it in a way that makes it their own... because cloning the sound of the original would be pointless! Good examples are Jimi Hendrix's version of Bob Dylan's "All along the Watchtower" and Johnny Cash's take of Nine Inch Nail's "Hurt". They're the same songs, but redone in a way that adds their personality to it! IMO Dinosaur Jr. does this cover admirably!
@klacker47 And they (D Jr) only did it kinda by default because I think their song "freak scene" pretty much follows the same chord progression, n that.
dinosaur jr is a great band, afi is a great band. i like both covers, personally i like afi's cover a little better because it sounds more like the original, but that's just me. i'm not an emo, not really much of anything actually though i prefer punk rock. my question is, why y'all gotta hate?
I agree, but to regard someone as 'better' from a a technical standpoint is a very hard thing to do, and feel its over used not only in mascis' case, but everywhere. I enjoy listening to dinosaur more than shit like evh cause thats my taste, not because of technicality
want to know something soooo strange (apparently)?? i listen to, and thoroughly enjoy the cure, dinosaur jr, AND afi. woooaaahh. crazy i know. i should be mamed. sheeesh calm down people. opinions are just opinions - agreeable or otherwise. i love this version, along with the original. i'm glad they made it their own (unlike another cover of the cure *cough311cough*) they didn't write it, after all.
this is a Jazzmaster (you can see it by the shape of the pickups which are bigger and other things), anyway I agree with you , Nirvana was just another good alternative band but no breakthough in my opinion
I'd just like the point out that Robert Smith has said on numerous occasions that this is his favorite cover of the song, and that Dinosaur Jr has in fact influenced how The Cure performs the song live. Don't know much about AFI, hadn't ever heard of them before, but I wasn't a big fan of their cover. I wasn't offended by it or anything, but I didn't dig it. Then again, I like this version way more than the original, which the AFI version was a near copy of.
thousand times better thank the others covers. When you cover you have to pass your own style not just to copy carbon the original. They do it perfect. And the wa wa is tooooooooooooooo much exciting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

❤
I like how Dinosaur JR has always covered this song in their style. If I wanted to hear it done like the Cure i'd just listen to the original
There's a few versions of this on TH-cam, and I've heard them do this song live a few times... but this version is AMAZING! Love it.
I cant tell you how many times people have told me J Mascis is the greatest guitarist of all time.
nymetsrock he doesn't make many top 100 lists. he's underrated
He's in the Rolling Stone Magazine top 100 list of greatest guitarists at #86.
I credit j mascis and Kevin shields for inspiring to buy a jazzmaster
😂squier got a not very expensive J Mascis artist signature jazzmaster, that makes me want one more badly
I love these guys and this song. J is a genius. Thanks Cleve to introducing me to this way back in the 90s.

Exactement et celle de blink 182 de e Letter to élise et superbe
"Alright thanks for comin' everybody; goodnight!" Funny shit man. I love this band!
Ah, to the haters, someday you'll grow up to find that the world is not all sweetness and light and pretty dress-up bands. To each his own--if humor and passion isn't your thing, so be it. This is the shit. Period.
Dinosaur jr is just amazing .

This is the best cover of a song on earth. Period.
They have aged physically but not mental. I know this from 10 years ago but I just saw them 3 months and they are still just as amazing.
Dino jr's coming to halifax in a couple of weeks im so excited.
i saw them in pittsburgh 3 years ago.j,lou and murph r the hardest hitting band i ever saw.and i have seen plenty.luv em
Amazing band covering another amazing band's song, the result? Freaking epic.
Best version
OMFG incredible cover of one of the best rock songs ever written. When two things as awesome as this song and this band happen at once, good things are bound to happen.
i love listening to this song in the morning, it gets you pumped up for the day,
His wall of Plexi's and his pedal board are things of sheer beauty...

the absolute best cover of this fantastic song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
He doesnt over use anything. This is their way, like it over leave it. I really like that wah-tremelo sound.....bit funny-spacy sound
Love the wha wha pedal, it's nice to hear this song with a harder edge, most people try to go softer with it and this is better.
I'm a huge fan of The Cure and Dinosaur JR.
This video is the fusion between these two groups ! GREAT
Great right foot on the Wah !!!
I'm going to see that live in Luxembourg the 25/08!
Dinossaur Jr. rules!!!!

Dino Jr along with Sonic Youth and Nirvana Perfected the 90's
dinosaur jr cover is the best cover of this song
Amazing cover. Even better live.
(I never thought in my life I would see a version of Just Like Heaven with a guitar solo in it)
best rock band EVER!!!!
I can agree. I love it cause it's unique.
Me too. Great time. Great song. I just love it!
Seen these last night in MCR Ritz and they were GREAT

I want to live in this video.
Same

uuhhh will never get tired of this fucking song
I can't wait to see them in Belgrade next week!
Thanks Sgt pepper. Glad you cleared that up!! lol.
J Mascis is amazing. I swear he is getting better as he gets older.
just saw them yesterday killer show, im know you'll enjoy it
Dinosaur Jr and AFI shouldn't even be spoken about in the same universe.
The Wah-Wah makes it an awesome song
That's the point. They covered this song years ago - way before Kurt Cobain etc. Note the similarities, the Fender Jaguar, the Rickenbacker Bass - almost as if Nirvana copied them.
best live track ever heard
Good shit. I wish I was there.
Ah, J...you fucking rock old man.
lol at haters thinking that this ruins the original when mr. smith said himself it was one of the better versions of the songs recorded.
wow, you really, REALLY hit the nail on the head. The 90s wouldn't be shit without those bands (excluding Radiohead)
This was released in the late 80's
THAT's EIGHTIES
The audience shredded the poor monster into pieces.Lol
This is... awesome.
Definitely one of the best if not the best Cure cover I've ever heard (there are tons of them, so I can't be sure, lol)
bwaa bwaa bwaa bwaa rockin the jr
this is so beautiful..

Hells yeah, that's bad-ass
@Nercrophage EXACTLY. Not liking this video does not equate with not liking Dinosaur Jr, folks.
Agreed. I love this cover, too. :3
brilliant! genius
AMAZING COVER
Love both versions
And they (D Jr) only did it kinda by default because I think their song "freak scene" pretty much follows the same chord progression, n that.
Amazing.
love
AFI < Dino Jr...in every way.
modest mouse can get some love....they are great.
I realy like this cover.
@klacker47
And they (D Jr) only did it kinda by default because I think their song "freak scene" pretty much follows the same chord progression, n that.
DYNAMIC WAH ENTRY. Excellence.
Absolutely transcendent.
i agree!
Also, it has been said, by Robbie Smith no less, that he loves this cover.
Guaauu, ¡menudo pildorazo! El tema de The Cure, magnífico; la versión de los dinosaurios..., una fuerza de la naturaleza. ¡Dale, daleeeee!
dinosaur jr is a great band, afi is a great band. i like both covers, personally i like afi's cover a little better because it sounds more like the original, but that's just me. i'm not an emo, not really much of anything actually though i prefer punk rock. my question is, why y'all gotta hate?
It rocks!
Freeking Sweet !!!
damn, this was pretty cool. i would like to thank an inividual who recommended them to me. :)
