Velos (D19) began life as USS Charrette (DD-581)
The Fletcher-Class USS Charrette was commissioned on 18th May 1943, spending her early War career on portals and escort duty.
On 5th May 1944, she assisted the USS Fair (DE-35) to sink I-175 with Hedgehog anti-submarine mortar, the first ijn sub to be sunk by the weapon.
12th February 1944, she raided a Japanese base before returning to support duties.
Her final action of 1944 was to take part in the battle of the Leyte Gulf. Where she would guard the carriers.
She would end the war in San Francisco, being decommissioned on 15th January 1947. She earned 13 Battlestars during her service.
After modification, on 16th July 1959, she was formerly handed over and commissioned to the Hellenic Navy as Velos (D16)
Her career with the Greek Navy saw her sure with nato Fleets but her most famous moment in Greek service came on 25th May 1973.
Under the Command of Nikolaos Pappas. She was taking part in NATO exercises off Italy.
While on patrol, Commander Pappas decided to munity against the military junta in power in Greece at the time.
The crew claimed asylum, with some refusing to join out of fear.
On 25th July 1974, the junta fell, Cmdr Pappas returned to the Navy reaching the rank of Vice Admiral.
Velos was decommissioned on 26th February 1991, being persevered as a museum ship in 1994 as a Museum of the Struggle against the dictatorship.
She is moored at the Naval Tradition Park in Palaio Faliro, Athens.
The ship is anchored in Thessaloniki about 3-4 years now

Velos (“Arrow” in Greek) (D16) began life as USS Charrette, the USS Charrette (DD-581), a Fletcher-class destroyer of the United States Navy, was launched on 3 June 1942 by the Boston Navy Yard, sponsored by Mrs. G. Charrette; and commissioned on 18 May 1943, with Commander E. S. Karpe in command. Entering service during World War II, the ship spent its career in the Pacific theatre. Placed in reserve following the war, it was transferred to the Kingdom of Greece in 1959 and renamed Velos (D16), remaining in service till 1991 before being preserved as a museum ship at Palaio Faliro, Athens. The USS Charrette (DD-581) received 13 battle stars for her World War II service.
The ship was involved in a mutiny on the morning of May 23, 1973, as the Greek destroyer warship Velos was floating outside Sardinia, Italy, participating in a NATO exercise, its commander Nikolaos Pappas and his officers were listening to the radio in angst.
The radiowave was terribly ominous for them: back in Greece, the authoritarian regime of the Military Junta arrested and brutally tortured Navy officers who had organized a Movement to overthrow the Dictatorship imposed by the Colonels, back in April 1967. As a result, the crew requested asylum in Italy, with some fearing the fate of them or their families being tortured, refused to join.
It wouldn’t be until July 25, 1974, when the regime collapsed, and Commander Pappas was reinstated into the Hellenic Navy, ultimately reaching the rank of Vice Admiral. On February 26 1991, Greek Fletcher-class destroyer 'Velos' D-16 was decommissioned and became a museum ship, now anchored in the Naval Tradition Park at Palaio Faliro near Athens. Last year, strong winds and waves caused damage to Velos’s moorings and stern, which resulted in her being towed into the city’s harbor for repairs.

It plays exactly like the Euro line -- except it also has a smoke to disengage, and the torps do more damage... If you play that line well, you'll play this well. The gun DPM is fine -- it has 1 less gun than a Fletcher, but fires 20% faster. And the torps will go 74 knots on a proper torp build -- the fastest for the tier. Coming from someone who wins most with torp DDs, I think it will be fine in the hands of someone with experience on that line. Most people do horrible on the Euro DD line because they think it's totally fine to open up in a 1v3 fight...
I’ve played almost all the euro dd there’s a huge difference your dpm is similar but when you compare to tier the 8 (can remember name) has a radar and very rapid guns and 10 torps and is much more tanky this ship is just really bad
Smalland has the fastest torps.
@coopergoebel9943 I'm working on unlocking smaland but from I can tell smaland is very strong in tier 8. Which doesn't make velos bad, just not that good.
As someone who is newer to the game and has no tier 8s but got lucky with a kidd in a champion box im looking forward to playing it. Plus I've been maining french and pan eu dds so used to difficult play style

0:35 the 2nd pronunciation was right ( I'm greek) and I honestly think they should buff this ship a little bit... It's kinda mid rn at its current state. Or make it a t7 it would fit in t7 better than t8 I feel like...

Love the video Spartan, finally they added a ship of my country, but it requires a lot of skill which may not be very fun in certain situations

The new French commander from the tie-in makes the French battlecruisers much better. Use mimbelli and Scott as inspirations. Use the commanders special trait in the third row. Also have fully packed

Now if memory serves me the Velos is the fourth destroyer/campaign ship for 2024. If one has a fully upgraded Fletcher, I don't see the motivation to pursue the Velos. This will be an easy pass for me, in what has been a very lackluster year of campaign ships...
I'd like to see a few premium Tier 8 cruisers over the next few months from the Japanese, British, Soviets, or Italians and maybe, just maybe a premium Soviet battleship for Tier 8, but that's just me. 😜
The monthly campaign is in desperate need for a ship that can cause a LOT of unilateral enthusiasm.
I also want to point out that the last match my torps got knocked out 1 min in because I actually made a tun mistake and was spotted. But hell no torps this ship is done.

They seem to work together pretty well. In this instance we just had a better team than they did

Good video Spartan I would have skipped this one but I buy out these campains so I can spend that update getting steel, I am saving to Mighty Mo, and I need a little over 4k steel I got 12, 525 steel as of now, but once I get her campaign ships like this can rot, Ijust get the backing not by it out, if I get the ship okay if not no loss.
I know some are excited it was a new nation, and if you come from there that is even more understandable, but to me this is just another Fletcher Class Destroyer I have 2 before I got this, so yeah another torp ship, great, but then I hear but it is a historical ship more of these, less paper ones or the reskins like the Montana we got this update as I look at this ship,
Well to them I say then get ready for tons of DDs because they were the only ships built in large numbers to fit that historical ship built so a port full of DDs, I mean there are a few sister ships left of BBs, CLs, and wait for it CVs to build like Washington,
Also by the way got this Montana this update reload to 19.6 stock still not maxed on the 1 insperation commander, and the commander that was for this ship I bet I get that to 18.9,
Oh.. I had so high hopes for this one, it actually saddens me to see this. Great video, dont get me wrong. But Ive been grinding for three weeks and are one percent away. Shoot..
The issue I have is how many would actually try to use that ram
I debated buying admiralty backing for this b/c the ship seems meh, but did it for the increased bonuses throughout the campaign. Would have been cool if they gave it some sort of ramming ability where the ship doesn't take much damage, since that's how the old triremes fought.
Yeah its almost always worth the 2500 and grind out campaign if you don't want the ship you can always sell it

Alright a bit help from Greece here. Velos (Βέλος) is pronounced short /ɛ/ as in "egg" and in greek it means arrow. Mati Mataki (Μάτι Ματάκι) means Eye Small Eye and letter "a" is pronounced short /æ/ as is "apple".
You could swap out Sims for the Pan Asian guy for better concealment and more torp damage.. it could be a thing

hi just asking have you ever had the game rob you of two crates and other rewards after you finish a battle?
so was in contact with wowsl people they say I got crates and opened them which I never received so how can I open them if they didn’t arrive on my screen so I’m now a lying been playing game doing ok on the game for 5years waste of space paying customer. The crates not appearing is the issue not the fact that most of the time you only get paint or other stuff maybe a slim chance of a ship if this is happening to me who’s next ? But they don’t want to know.
So its a T7 Fletcher with less guns, one rack of torps, and it gets uptiered? Why? Also, I think this would have served better as a T6 in the store than a T8 campaign.

I think the ship gets too much hate if you make a torp build and don’t just yolo into the cap you will get decent results. Just play it like a ijn destroyer and you will be fine

Better to use the other DD cdr as you can get reduced spotting, the guns are floaty, and this ship is paper. You can only use this for spamming 5 torp every 39 sec with my build, space fishy, and Bey. That being said it really sucks.

They have naval ram on the front of the ship... I get it's for looks but why have it if ya cnt at least cause damage with it... Fuck up on wg part in my opinion.... Should be able ram light cruisers... Or DD.. considering they nurtured this thing.. would be nice counter as last defence... I'm sorry this triggered the fuck outta me

A historical ship ruined by wargaming’s tendency to do every campaign tier 8. Seriously the ship has nothing that it can render it tier 8 no good stats even consumables the lack of radar and sonar make the situation even worse. The ship should be a tier 7 and it will be a great ship . What is a fletcher doing in tier 8?

It's like a nutterd fletcher up tiered to tier 8 it's sad .u lose a gun and torps . Why even play it? I love fletcher but taking off one turret is not good and only 1 torp rack is bad. U could play kidd and get 5 turrets and a heal and better aa at tier6. They should have made it tier 6 not tier 8 idk what they were thinking
