    My Mini DV camcorder has eaten a tape. I got it out but won't try again. I purchased a PCIe firewire card / cable but I need a new camera with firewire. The ones on Amazon are used / sketchy 10+ years old. Where to find a new camcorder that supports Mini DV + firewire? Is there a better way? I need to save some old tapes to my NAS and backup to the cloud.

    Hey Daddyo! Thanks for the info. I went ahead and got the thunderbolt adapter and I plugged in my JVC gr dvL820u. The IMac made the usual plug and play sound but when I looked for the device it wasn’t there. It is in the device manager and I updated the driver but the computer is still not letting me access the camera. I went over the camera user manual and I did it by the book. Still nothing. For clarity, I am running windows 10 boot camp on a 2014 IMac. I even booted into Mac OS SeIERA and that time the computer made no sound at all. Have you experienced this before? Please let me know. I have 20 mini Dv tapes I was hopping to transfer. Thanks again for the great info!

  • @SwingWestBand
    @SwingWestBand 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    One word of warning....If you have an iMac and have upgraded the operating system to the latest Catalina, it won't recognise a Firewire input. Apple have discontinued Firewire support. Way around it? Don't upgrade the Operating system, stick with previous Os. How do I know this? I have lots of mini DV tapes, but I upgraded the OS. Now I can't capture normal DV. Sometimes I can capture HDV format tapes using Premiere Pro, but not normal DV format tapes. I have yet to try capturing using a USB cable, or a Component cable plus I am concerned that the image quality may be degraded using these options.

    • @DadReviews
      @DadReviews  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @DadReviews

      You can, but I don't think you'll be able to control your camera. This give your more control and an old version if iMovie autosplits clips when the camera is turned on and off, which is something that I was looking for.

    Why do you want to control the DV camera. Just record the whole tape and take full control over the file

    • @DadReviews
      @DadReviews  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wanted it to automatically split up the files when the software noticed a cut, which is a feature in an older version of iMovie, and to be able to have that functionality, the camera has to be able to be controlled by the computer.
