Just started to digitize 32+ hours of VHS-C & mini-DV tapes. One Mini-DV is damaged. So thanks for the tutorial. Also, thanks for the stress relief moment as well. :D
“The Golden Present” by Jesse Gallagher! Initially, I had a different song but youtube gave me a copyright claim so I had to replace it using TH-cam’s studio editor, and this song was long enough to cover the entire video. Glad the music resonates with you haha!
Screwless tapes are glued or ultrasonically welded; so, a very sharp razor knife will open it with just a few passes across the seam. Have a camera running to capture what the layout is as you open it, so you know how to piece it back together. Or disassemble a donor tape for practice first. (After you dissemble the case, you can also replace it with a one that has screws)
Thank you so much for this!! I will be trying to fix my tape tmr then 🙌 quick question tho! For the tape that you can see through the case, would that be the end of the film or the beginning of the film? I was thinking of just manually rewinding my tape instead of rewinding it on my camera, cuz it somehow always gets jammed (I think that’s cuz of the somewhat damaged film) 🥲
I got one for you: the kids got a hold of a mini-dv tape and ripped the tape out of the cassette casing. It's currently bagged up into a mangled pile inside a zip-lock bag at the top of my closet. Is that footage ruined or is that repairable?
If most of the tape is mangled with scratches or creases, it will be very difficult to repair. However, if only a section is damaged, you can cut out that part. This tutorial is only applicable if there is still an undamaged section of the tape remaining!
I feel really stupid after clicking on this. I've fixed VHS tapes this way for years, but had been told by someone I trusted that mini DV tapes would not tolerate being touched and that I would almost certainly ruin them trying.
I watched your tutorial and was able to remove the two spools from the damaged tape, but could not open a new tape case. Would you have an opened case that I could purchase and place the two spools in it? Let me know and I will send payment and shipping address. Thanks!
Hello I have ordered a replaceable dvc tape and the cassette was broken so I had to take the reel out . I wanted to ask you how long can I keep the tape outside of the cassette or is it safe to keep It. I'm keeping it in a low temperature
What if the damaged areas of the tape have video data. You just lose that part of the video? I’d rather find a way to restore the actual tape rather than disposing of potentially good footage.
Unfortunately, yes. However, you can try stretching the damaged area or pressing it with a stack of books and leave it for a few days. But I cannot guarantee that the “damaged” section will be recovered.

You should be fine but try to avoid too much heat or light, as it can damage the tape. Somewhere cool and dark should be fine
@@BreakifyTV nowadays its hard to find a case with screws so if I use it with one with no screws how do I place it back again.
Thanks jobs done.
I don't have any screws in my mini dv
Зачем её было резать, можно было разровнять 🤔
