I gave an oral report back in high school about these battles between students and townspeople of Oxford. Even my teacher thought I was making this up (I was well known as a writer of fiction, even in my teens). I had to bring in all of my reference material for a follow-up presentation to show that this was historical fact, not some flight of fancy of mine. Neither my fellow students nor my teacher could believe that student riots were very common, with murders, rapes, all kinds of madness. And as far as the king coming down on the side of the students and the university, I would've told that old bastard to go pound sand.
It's not nice, but I see why the King sided with the scholars. His power rested on the military support of the aristocracy and his legal authority on the Church. The students were mostly sons of aristocrats training for the church. Injust but plus ça change
I love the history of English universities. They seem so ancient and the students really sound rowdy and romantic in the early modern era specifically. Can't wait to watch it all!
Yes I heard Oxford College had that whole gang thing going on in the middle ages. Getting into battle royale with the townspeople. I can picture that opening to the movie Gangs of New York.
A dark tale, indeed! I'd love to see you in a sumptuous BBC4 documentary, trekking around the relevant Oxford locations with a few student battle re-enactments as a background to your wry narration, perhaps!
What an interesting history. I was a student at Oxford in 2000 for a 6-week overseas study program, and heard some of the history of the city and the university, but not this part! I wonder if this is the origin of the traditional disdain that Oxfordians have for Cambridge, using the epithet "the other place" instead of saying "Cambridge"?
I would love to make a tour to an old library and being the one who finds a secret pasage to a secret wing of the building fill with books and archives.
A grim history of Oxford I had no idea of... I have been half in love with the idea of Oxford for half my life (ever since I read Northern Lights!), and since my sister started studying Archaeology there a few years back I finally had reason to cross the globe and spends some time there. And it is genuinely one of the most amazing places I've been, so weighed down with history. Just found your channel today, but really liking what I've seen of your content, both the deep dives and the short essays. Thank you for your work!
Cinzia, I love your library. I would love to look at every book in your library. My library is pretty large as well. I love books. Nothing like a good read!
Wow!.. But also telling towards the Religious Adherence of Today..! Professing Morales while engaging in Amoral activities.. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Good and entertaining Post!👍🏾
I'm not sure of the exact legal position in England but if it's anything like Paris University on which Oxford was modeled then many students joined because that way they were outside the jurisdiction of regular courts and only subject to canon law. Many never became priests and used their education for secular purposes, they were the foundation of the civil service of the time.
This is unbelievably fascinating and I need to find books and articles about this! I'm going to go on a nice deep dive into English academia- old school.
TH-cam didn't tell me until 6 days after you posted! How dare they. You're far too fantastic to be late to! Please excuse my late arrival. I enjoy (nearly) all of your videos very much including your mythological long-form videos.
I realise it’s already fairly well covered, but the story of Horace De Vere Cole is an interesting one. He went to Cambridge not Oxford. Percy Bryce Shelley did attend Oxford until he was expelled on suspicion of atheism. Another amusing story.
Great video! Just chiming into say that r*pe and SA is not just about sex but about power. Therefore being able to afford to hire sex workers does not really cover those who get a sense of power through assault.
...WTF?! We had one murder at my university and the whole campus was filled with a dark and sad atmosphere. Was it made a 'sport' by Oxford because all of the people there were rich nobles?
Nothing glamorous about Medieval Oxford in 1298. Street brawls, sex workers being stabbed, English, Irish and Welsh fights, knives fights… just like what we are living in 2024. Nothing has changed.
well the optician has never said anything about myopia caused health issues and I saw them just five months ago so I think I'm good. Perhaps you should go and see one yourself?
But they're fine. Because an optician said so just a few months ago, Whereas you are not an optician, have no equipment, and are seeing "protruded" eyes where there aren't any so... I think you should go get yours checked out, desperately.
Even criminals need an academic education. 😂 this must be there [Blood & Books] chapter. 🤔 I wonder if they had gang names or did they just go by their fraternities names? 😏
Thank you for your video. While I was watching it TH-cam interrupted your paid sponsorship with their own advertising. Not your fault, I know. Just thought you might like to know.
I think my class prejudice may have been activated. I kept thinking 'Frustrated posh boys becoming violent and getting away with it. Fancy that'.
I absolutely adore how you bring the term used for an "aesthetic" to a far more historically accurate usage.
Agreed!

Wow! Didn’t know Oxford had such a violent history! As always you make history very interesting!
I had no idea there was such a history to Oxford. Wow! Fascinating.
This was fascinating. A little clip in time I would have otherwise never known about.
Thanks for this fascinating gruesome Oxford University video Cinzia! 😱
This was highly entertaining, thank you! Have you covered the medieval scholars in Paris? Naughty, dark magic, Harry Potter vibes!
What an interesting, if dark and gruesome, topic. I never imagined such a thing could have happened.
Pretty wild....never would have thought that at all.

Good timing. Just decided to do a day trip to Oxford tomorrow.
Such an unexpected yet intriguing piece Cinzia, thanks for sharing!!
Cinzia, I love your library. I would love to look at every book in your library. My library is pretty large as well. I love books. Nothing like a good read!
Oxford makes Animal House look tame by comparison. Of course one was a movie, the other really happened. Great video!

Another instant classic, keep up the great work :)

Love your sweater! Those are some of my favorite colors all together 😊
Loved the video! You could easily do a collab with the channel Medieval Madness 😅
Wow! I had no idea anything this crazy happened at Oxford. I bet that place is haunted AF!
always an excellent presentaton...thank you.........
As an American this is one more instance I can say, "I never knew that!"
This is unbelievably fascinating and I need to find books and articles about this! I'm going to go on a nice deep dive into English academia- old school.
So student activities were a bit more drastic than today. Wild
Another splendid video, a pleasure to watch! thank you.
Im so glad you made this video, i have been interested in this topic for a long time ❤

I really love your storied videos.
Very interesting!
I just pressed like before watching the video, cause I know I'm gonna love it.
That was really interesting. May I pique your interest in the University of Salamanca? Is one of the oldest universities still working.
Love your videos-thank you
Honesty, way more interesting then the Secret History.
People were really crazy in Medieval times.
That was fascinating.
I cannot put in words how much I love your accent lol
This was an amazing video! Great job
Thanks for another amazing video!

Interesting sponsor spot! Now, whenever I think Squarespace, I'll think "murder"
Awesome vid!
I need a book in the style of Umberto Eco
Good stuff, Kiddo.
I can't think of Oxford now without thinking of Sir Humphery from Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister.
Do you ever study/discuss the works/life of Sappho?
So Inspector Morse isn’t as fictional as I thought.
...WTF?! We had one murder at my university and the whole campus was filled with a dark and sad atmosphere. Was it made a 'sport' by Oxford because all of the people there were rich nobles?
No surprises then.
I enjoyed shows like Endeavour, but always thought the murder rate in Oxford was exaggerated. Maybe they just need to set it at an earlier date?
Is that a traffic cone??

When did you start wearing glasses and what's your prescription?😢
...wtrf?
@@CinziaDuBoisYour eyeballs seems to be strained and protruded because of myopia
well the optician has never said anything about myopia caused health issues and I saw them just five months ago so I think I'm good. Perhaps you should go and see one yourself?
@@CinziaDuBois Myopia is a serious illness and I want to cry for your beautiful eyeballs that are destroyed by the homework and exams😭

Oh no ...
The Church invented violent incelism 😮
For the algo😊
Sounds like a proto-Bullingdon Club
so students/ academics have always been revolting.

🏃🏽♀️🎓🔪🗡️
Please call them full service sex workers, not prostitutes.
