In the early seasons (before they had money) a lot was inferred. You never saw Rob Stark win a battle. You heard about it. You saw Tyrion prepare for battle then wake up after it. The first battles we saw was the battle of black water bay and the battle at the wall. That was deep into the show.

It would've been great if it were a 10 episode season with 9th being the Battle of the Gullet and 10th being the fall of King's Landing. Just imagine the ending of the 10th episode with Raenyra sitting the iron throne and all six dragons flying over KL. Also Aemond arriving at Harrenhall to find it empty and learing that KL had been sacked. Leaving him very angry. It would've been a contrast to the finale of Season 1 where the greens had the upper hand.

I can't believe I'm saying this but this show makes me miss Cersei. No more excuses going into S3.

You guys have to remember that they write the whole season long before they start filming, HOWEVER they had 2 MAJOR upsets after the season was written. The first was that HBO decided they only wanted to do 8 episodes to a season instead of 10. On top of that, HBO cut the budget from $25 million an episode to just $20 million for a season total of $160 million. And while that sounds like a lot, this show is making 3 films' worth of content for 1/3 of the budget. Is it any wonder they cut to the end of the battles instead of spending a lot of money showing them? Or that they spent so much time at Harrenhal, getting their money's worth out of that set they built? The second major thing that got in their way was the Writer's Strike. Even though the British team was not on strike, Condal and Hess had to put down their pens and just stay with the show as producers/showrunners, unable to tweak the writing as they went along (the way they normally do). It was kind of out of their control, so in order to fit better into the shorter season, they had to to cut about 3 episodes' worth of content and stretch some storylines to be able to cut things off at the 8th episode. They had planned for 2 *BIG* battles this season (Rook's Rest was one of them, and I'm guessing the Battle for the Gullet was the 2nd one). The fact we only got one seems to indicate changes had to be made to fit the limitations they had this season. On the podcast Condal said that this season (which only takes place over a few weeks, remember) has done all the character work and the players have explored every last avenue for getting out of having to go to war. There is no path left to them, so war is coming, and that is what next season will be. The orchestra has tuned up, everyone is in place...all that's left is to start the dance.
One thing Alicent conveniently forgot to tell Rhaenyra was about the triarchy. She was in the very meeting where Aemond said Tyland needed to talk with them so she is aware they are asking for the triarchy to end the blockade of the Gullet. King's Landing is a feat Rhaenyra deserved to get for herself. To have Alicent give it to her is not just moronic, it takes again Rhaenyra's agency and triumph. Alicent also is selling out everyone she loves, not just Aegon and Aemond. Daeron, the son she was so happy to learn was kind is coming to fight for the faction she started. Her brother is also marching for their cause. Her father is in jail which I don't know how, but he is a traitor to the realm and he will have to be executed as well. He was the Hand and he crowned an usurper. She sold them all out because she couldn't handle all the hardships of a war she started. She also wanted to protect her dear Helaena from Aemond, but she left her alone with him. History won't paint her a villain. She reached for more than she should. She is the antagonist. Even if they try to whitewash her, the moment she put on the green dress and started to undermine Rhaenyra as the heir, she created the entire situation that now dooms them.
Actually, at the end of this season, I feel sad for every character in this except Aemond. One misunderstanding from Alicent made this all happen. I feel sad for Alicent, Rhaenyra, Daemon, and even for Aegon, because the only one who cares for him was his dragon; his own brother betrayed him. A perfect ending for season 2.
@jeevan The misunderstanding from Alicent did not cause the war, when Alicent told the green council that Viserys made Aegon his heir Otto says to everyone else in the room “Then we proceed with our plans with his blessing.” So regardless of whether Alicent misunderstood what Viserys said Otto and most of the council were planning to have Aegon usurp the throne.
Don’t you at all think that Alicent just may be lying? While she makes this talk, Larys already moved Aegon away, this could be their plan. Rhaenyra would get the starving city and all problems of its ruler and the greens would play for time and try to convert new riders from her side. They know they cannot win now in direct fight so that would make a decent plan.
I agree with this. In my opinion, Larys let the bastards leave because they are useless without dragons which they need too and he could negociate a deal with them later since their only loyalty is really to themselves. He was def waiting for them to take out Aemond. Larys is playing 3D chess.
@@bigjoh02 Yeah I think Larys got his own plans and everyone else is running for cover or causing chaos. I don't know if I buy Alicent's act. She's only doing this because she thinks she's on the losing side. If Aemond wasn't uncontrollable and let her be on the council, she would not have left.
And instead made up pointless crap for others. What is this crap. Just do three seasons instead of four. Last scene of this season should have been Rhaenyra on the throne with a little bit of blood dripping from a cut she got from the throne rejecting her. That would have been cool.
35:19 This kind of narrative style is so similar to the books, the 'actiony' action sometimes takes place before a chapter and the viewpoint character has to deal with the aftermath, which elevates the stakes and makes for better drama honestly
Vhagar is big but she is not invincible. The book makes it clear that while she is big, she is also old, heavy and tired. They even imply Meleys could have won against Vhagar if not for Sunfyre's interference. Caraxes is ruthless and he is faster and younger. Also, Daemon has 3-4 times more experience riding than Aemond. He's been a dragonrider for 30+ years while Aemond in show canon has been riding for 6.
Daemon saw it all. Including how he died. And it finished making him a new man. What a pay-off for a side quest a lot of people did not like throughout the season.
You could have resolved that subplot in 2-3 episodes, not the entire season. They wasted so much time on everyone doing the most monotonous things possible until it was too late to actually have any payoff.
Not alot of people realise the fleet commander for essos is a trans youtuber Abigail thorn, who makes content on philosophy. It was funny when she asked what kind of man the lannister was? A philosopher?
34:56 I think those final shots emphasized how Rhaenyra and Allicent have almost completely switched mindsets at this point. Rhaenyra has adopted her father’s vision of ruling at any cost (for the sake of the prophecy), and now Allicent only wants to be free to make her own decisions. Further emphasized by all the scrolls on top of Rhaenyra, like the history is holding her down. And then the open sky above Alicent, as she’s finally ready to fly free.

38:29 nah man, the thing is that all of the drama that plays out in the episodes essentially boils down to war, wether to win it or avoid it. Battles are a the culmination of such drama and also at the end determine the way forward. If you don't have a battle then you should show how you avoided it(shogun) but here we have a clear sign that there will be a battle but we still didn't see one, which shouldve been the season finale.Alslo Battle scenes are different from mindless voilence, it involves mind games, tricks, last minute saves, character confrontations etc
Won't go into details but there is a scene in Game of Thrones if anyone remember where Joffrey spoil a lot of big moments of House of the Dragon in the form of a history lesson from his perspective.
I've seen so many people complaining about this finale and the season overall but I really enjoyed both. I thought the character building and the battle lines being drawn was great storytelling. It's all been leading up to S3. My one complaint is that I would have loved seeing Rhaena claim the wild dragon. I thought Emma D'Arcy was amazing all season and especially in this episode. Now the wait for S3 begins.
@@milanmohan7731 Respectfully, I disagree. @KelliFranklin I agree with everything you mentioned. That's how I see this season, the character developments are important to establish before the action takes place. Or else any action, death and loss mean nothing to the audience, they did a great job settling up S3.

Jace isn't looking down at people. The reason he's harsh towards the dragonseeds is because he fears when his mother dies then they will just turn around and refuse to listen to him - possibly even try claiming the throne for themselves. He thinks this because he knows the rumours surrounding his own ancestry and him having a dragon was a way to show he's a legitimate Targaryen but now the Dragonseeds have bigger dragons which puts them in the same position as Jace. Aegon and Aemond, whom everyone knows and are Rhaenyra's brothers, took the throne frok Rhaenyra. One of the major reasons the Greens felt emboldened to do this was because they have Vhagar - the largest dragon. The dragonseeds could do the same thing. What's more is the Blacks don't know anything about them - except Addam.
Achara be like How Daeman and caraxes will face Aemond and Vhagar alone. Girl!!! you have no idea whats gonna happen dude you are infront of Daemon Targaryen.
Not so. There were supposed to be 2 more Episodes, but they were cut because of the Writers Strike. I think they did a great job of revealing important information & setting up Season 3 perfectly. It's not their fault there was a Writers Strike. I loved every Episode of Season 2, including the Finale.
There’s historical precedence for a king returning after a civil war and being embraced by the people. In the 1600s the parliament defeated the royalists in the English Civil war and executed King Charles I and the heir Charles II fled to France. But the victors were mostly Puritans and they passed draconian laws such as banning playing cards. These laws weren’t popular among most English people. After the puritan leader Cromwell died the people invited Charles II back from exile and the monarchy was restored.
Basically, it was the budget that limited all the battles we could have seen first-hand, but had to settled for the "aftermath" - The showrunners planned to end the season on a big WTF battle, but HBO forced them into moving it to season 3, which is why people are complaining about feeling like the season finale was more like an episode 8 of a 10 episode season, which it was originally planned as. It's tragic, but business is business :[
Alicent is the cause of the war. Even if you want to say it was her and Otto's decision to set things in motion that led to it, she sits at the top, no matter what angle you look at it from.
One thing I liked about it was that it felt like most of the episode was simply closing the book on the stories of this season, kind of making it a story within a story... yet used the last montage scene to just be like, "And this is going to be the focus of the next season. Bye. For now."

@jeevan The misunderstanding from Alicent did not cause the war, when Alicent told the green council that Viserys made Aegon his heir Otto says to everyone else in the room “Then we proceed with our plans with his blessing.”
So regardless of whether Alicent misunderstood what Viserys said Otto and most of the council were planning to have Aegon usurp the throne.
Was anybody else expecting Alys to go behind the tree and the goat to walk out?!?!?
Alicent has never done anything smart in her life. I wouldn't expect her to be smart now
@@bigjoh02 Yeah I think Larys got his own plans and everyone else is running for cover or causing chaos. I don't know if I buy Alicent's act. She's only doing this because she thinks she's on the losing side. If Aemond wasn't uncontrollable and let her be on the council, she would not have left.
Alicent doesn't know that Aegon was leaving with Larys.
I feel sad for Alicent...the only one who always did what was expected of her...and now she is the one suffering most...
Son for a son already happen writers kinda forgot about Jaehaerys

35:19 This kind of narrative style is so similar to the books, the 'actiony' action sometimes takes place before a chapter and the viewpoint character has to deal with the aftermath, which elevates the stakes and makes for better drama honestly
Yes! Someone understands.
I NEED SEASON 3 NOWWWWWWW!!!!
Horrible storyline and ending to it... To be honest. What a wasted character.
You could have resolved that subplot in 2-3 episodes, not the entire season. They wasted so much time on everyone doing the most monotonous things possible until it was too late to actually have any payoff.
Exactly! I'm glad someone gets that.

Character building? They literally destroyed any character building these characters already had this season
@@milanmohan7731 Respectfully, I disagree. Imo I believe we got to experience the characters changing for better or worse based on the fact that there's going to be a war for the throne and how the whole war began. That's how I feel rn. I know a lot of people don't agree with me but I've never read the books and I just really enjoyed the storytelling.
@KelliFranklin I agree with everything you mentioned. That's how I see this season, the character developments are important to establish before the action takes place. Or else any action, death and loss mean nothing to the audience, they did a great job settling up S3.

Totally agree with you Jabi about the comparison with the Boys, that is over exposition for needless reasons but fun scenes, this is a story, not rushed maybe better explained with more episodes, a real drama, great reaction as always.... keep rocking and stay safe!!!!

After the puritan leader Cromwell died the people invited Charles II back from exile and the monarchy was restored.

less action yes, but my take is that building armies takes time. season three should be loaded with battles
Tyland's screentime was cray. Like why?
Basically, it was the budget that limited all the battles we could have seen first-hand, but had to settled for the "aftermath" - The showrunners planned to end the season on a big WTF battle, but HBO forced them into moving it to season 3, which is why people are complaining about feeling like the season finale was more like an episode 8 of a 10 episode season, which it was originally planned as.
It's tragic, but business is business :[
That's Daeron and his dragon Tesserion
Alicent is the cause of the war. Even if you want to say it was her and Otto's decision to set things in motion that led to it, she sits at the top, no matter what angle you look at it from.
@kennethharbor Yeah that is why her own council clearly already had plans in place to crown Aegon without her knowledge.
One thing I liked about it was that it felt like most of the episode was simply closing the book on the stories of this season, kind of making it a story within a story... yet used the last montage scene to just be like, "And this is going to be the focus of the next season. Bye. For now."
What stories? Most of the characters did nothing other than go around in circles or regress. One of the few characters with a semblance of an arc was Aegon
@@MrFredstt daemon changed. He completely changed and all his setup was paid off (except for him screwing his mom).
@@muhammedzayan4399 He spent the entire season having nightmares which could've wrapped up in a couple episodes
@@MrFredstt he left in ep 2, so 5 episodes of setup. Yep, it's too long. Could have been 4, could have removed him with his mother, and definitely could have added way more political scheming in the riverlands. I just thought his final payoff was great. He finally has a sense of direction.
@@MrFredsttimagine daemon changing his complete ideology just because he had couple of nightmares. That'd be stupid. You're dumb bro.
When the track of the Children of the Forest started playing, I was ❤
They finally laid the path for the entire next seasons: Three Eyed Raven vs. The Winter of Dark and Doom

I don't like Ulf's vibe. Bro is slowly getting on my nerves
Seriously, it doesn't even feel quite believable, sure he was a braggart in the tavern but all of a sudden he is acting completely clueless and a total buffoon, it was jarring and nonsensical -- just to make him extra unlikeable?
Jaby: “He’s getting me hyped! I can’t wait to see this!”
HBO: “Yeah, about that…”
😒😂
