Unreleased Vectorman Playstation 2 by Pseudo Interactive (September 29, 2002 Prototype)

  • Like Sonic, Mario and Zelda before him, Vectorman (famous robot from SEGA on the Mega Drive) should have had its transition from 2D to 3D on Playstation 2. Today, please find 11 prototypes and a few Game Design Documents for this Unreleased PS2 game !
Developed by Pseudo Interactive (the same as Full Auto on Xbox 360), the game would ultimately be cancelled. Maybe it looked too much like the Master Chief of the Microsoft game Halo !
Initially, the game was more in line with the two previous Mega Drive episodes, one of the elements retained being the aesthetics of Vectorman's orb. This more faithful approach lasted only 3 or 4 months before development was restarted.
You can download several Playstation 2 prototypes for Vectorman and read all about my research by following this link:
    en.sega-dreamc...
The video was made with the emulator PCSX2.

...this is surprisingly better than the footage that leaked earlier. It at least resembles a Vectorman game, with a character that resembles Vectorman. The most distracting things here are the arm poses and those ridiculously long strides he's taking.

Music 2: DJ Tom Stevens - Odysee
    Music 3: Rodd-Y-Ler - Lifesigns

What a shame this never came out, it looks like it had so much potential for a 3d Vectorman although it’s direction shift in the later prototypes unfortunately would’ve been what was released so maybe it was for the best.
Interestingly enough looking at all thiese prototypes in order is a clear example of Vision vs. Company around the 2000’s.

It feels like the footage is running a bit slow to me.
Might be because of the editing but I do think that the game could look a bit better with a slight increase in animation speed.
I also feel like there was a missed opportunity to apply cel shading because with the more conventional lighting shown here the game looks a bit flat and a revision of the art direction would elevate the simplistic environments and character models and make the graphics pop a bit more.

I loved Vectorman on the Genesis and it is awesome to see a prototype of the unreleased Vectorman 3D. I'm curious as to why development on it was cancelled. I would love to see a reboot of Vectorman on modern consoles even it has been nearly thirty years since the first game. Sega seems to rebooting many other classic franchises, so why not Vectorman?

    • @zrexx9428
      @zrexx9428 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think its probably just that, Vectorman as a franchise IP probably just doesn't have a lot of appeal. I dunno, it just seems like a game that would be hard to market to people. Maybe it's just me because I personally never cared about Vectorman, but Vectorman seems like one of those games that only managed to be sellable at the time it came out in. It basically sold itself entirely because gimmicky advancements in graphics technology were in.
Vectorman was sort of like the "Donkey Kong Country" of the Genesis in that the main selling point was it was doing very experimental fancy stuff graphically. But whereas Donkey Kong Country still had a lot of unique or at least interesting gimmicks (e.g. partner system, animal buddies, certain level design tropes like the use of barrels to launch yourself), Vectorman was mostly a generic game, basically almost your run of the mill side-to-side shooting platformer game. It had very little to sell itself on beyond just the novelty of the graphics. Not even the artstyle had a lot going for it... just literally how technologically impressive it was at the time. It was like the obsession with wireframes they had for a time... it was literally mostly from a technological standpoint that everyone was like "wowww" at wireframe 3D graphics but once the impressiveness wears off, it's not something people are begging to come back to y'know.
I guess my point is, who really exists as a demographic to the game sell to? Like I myself am a nut for run n' gun action heavy games. But you'd have an easier time marketing, say, newer Gunstar Heroes games if you wanted to do a "modernized run n' gun" as opposed to doing another Vectorman. You have to look at it like this. The "arcade shooting" genre, or however you want to label it, was already kinda niche in the PS2 era. Franchises like Contra survived but they had to stylize themselves and try new things and even just an IP like Contra just has more universal appeal. Considering that PS2 games were expensive back then like games are expensive nowadays, making a new Vectorman was just kinda like, asking to be a failure. At least it would've been hugely risky.
I kinda liked when developers would make newer titles that have a more classic sorta style to them. Super Monkeyball was a great example where they did something novel but for all intents and purposes it was a small-scale arcade-style game built on a very simple concept. Any game with that "retro feel", that has that kind of simpleness, was inherently at a disadvantage during that era where people wanted to buy bigger, larger, and more complex games. Your game needed a certain style or interesting concept to make it work. But Vectorman just didn't have that and I think Sega knew that. The only thing they could've done was market on nostalgia (e.g. PS1 frogger) but Vectorman wasn't like a widely known classic.
When you think about it, it's even kinda surprising that they managed to make games like the 3D Shinobi games on PS2 (though I don't know whether those were flops or not). It's really just about the climate these games were being released in that made it difficult

Damn, even if the direction shifted for Vectorman 3, they should have stuck to this direction and rolled w/ it. It has so much charm. Not very many games has inanimate objects, main characters and enemies moving to the music. The excuse that it looked like Halo too much isn't even a good excuse for how it got canned. Nothing about this screams Halo to me other than Vectorman being green.

I dig this a ton. Super blurry memory here, so the details on all this could be complete garbage: I remember one of the canceled Vectorman sequels was going to be this gritty shooter where the devs were talking about how all of limbs were now grafted on because of... I dunno mid 2000's edginess? I was just super confused reading it at the time wondering then how this guy was supposed to be Vectorman then? The whole point of the original games wasn't that he just shot a laser, it's he shot a laser while randomly turning into a bomb, tank, or a literal fly helicopter thing.
