The Wild Side of the Salton Sea

  • There are a million videos and blogs about the weird and wild of the Salton Sea. I haven't covered them all ...however I hope I've given you some sense of the wonder that is here.
In this video I go to Bombay Beach, the most visual collection of destruction that remains. Within the rumble on the beach, art installations mingle with trash...which sometimes became art.
What surprised me most, however, were how many people still live here. How many people drive through and around this little town, and like me, stare from within their vehicle and take pictures. I was a little sheepish but wanted you to see both the weird and the wonderful.
Next I go to Slab City. 4 miles from Niland, CA, Slab City is another tourist, gawking, opportunity. I was not brave enough to spend the night and because it had rained a lot the day before I also did not go to far in.
Finally, I stopped at an abandoned building I had seen along the highway. The gate was usually locked. But on this day ..it was open.
This is the first is a series of videos that will take you all around the lake...south, west, north and then east. Each has a different niche and demographics.
There will also be one video on camping in and near the Salton Sea.
    Subscribe below to get updates.
Thanks for watching. Hope you enjoy.

Cool video, I have been to the Salton Sea several times starting in 1985. I have met Leonard Knight who built Salvation Mountain. He was a kind soul and was so passionate about continuing his creation despite his age. We always took a can of Bush's Baked Beans for him when we stopped by because that was his favorite meal. The last building looks like it was a store due to the loading dock out back. Looking at the graffiti there are some pros in the area. You can see the number 13 which is a gang tag, not good at all! Take care Sue and keep rocking on down the highway!

But who are the real MISFITS? I beg to differ with the majority of society. I'm in recovery 15 yrs now from iv heroin addiction. I lived in the slums of Chicago as a white girl I was out of place in a gang and drug infested neighborhood. I grew up privileged in white suburbia and private school. Was 16 when I met people of color. I just want to say I was treated with more respect in the ghetto than I was ever shown in the burbs. What someone looks like on the outside rarely is what you encounter in the inside. If u believe otherwise life has some surprises for you

Thank you PerSue for your take on the Salton Sea neighborhoods. And if you should read this the segment about the man who didn't want to be filmed and his garden is what I found most interesting. Oh Don, I think of this encounter often and wish I had known more about water filtration so I could have asked questions. I was just stunned and delighted the whole time. Ha. He built a series of pools (3 I think)out of cement block, lined with pond liner stuff. The outside had stonework so it looked like a well. The top pool took in the raw water which he totted from the Colorado River. There was a bubbler in that pool i think and larger rocks with course sand. That water flowed into the 2nd pool, went through a finer filtration and so on until it got to the last pool which I took a drink from. Rocks, Sand, Charcoal. He had a way of controlling the flow and diverting water to the irrigation system...tubing throughout all the garden beds. Thats what I remember. Hope that helps. I think of him often and wonder if he is still there and thriving. Thanks for asking!

From yours and other videos Slab City makes me think about dystopian futures depicted in science fiction. AND I also thought, the heart of an artist. Sometimes desolate and destroyed, yet a deeper look, filled with life and awe inspiring beauty. People are complicated and danger can be random. The cairns were really neat and I enjoyed hearing about the sincerity of those creating them. Even though they were smelly heh. So many people leave out the other senses when being descriptive. From the intro I thought this was going to be about the migrating birds that now rely on the Sea. Many of the wetland areas have been converted to farms. Even though the Salton sea was an accident, it is about the only rest stop available to the birds.
I wonder if you couldn't get a lot at the Salton Sea even cheaper at a tax lien sale. Maybe even one with a mobile home on it.

Wonderful video! I see a lot of videos of people either gawking disrespectfully at the people who live at the Salton Sea/Niland/Slab City and I thought you were very respectful and extremely informative! I really enjoyed this. I am so interested about the Salton Sea, its inhabitants, and the surrounding areas, as it kind of does seem to be the last frontier for true freedom, especially in Slab City. I watch any and every documentary I can about the place and my favorite so far is “Plagues and Pleasures on the Salton Sea”. It’s a great documentary and I recommend anyone who’s interested to check it out. I have been wanting to visit so badly and interact with the locals (if they’ll have me) and just spend time with them and get to know them, just as you did. Others can say what they will about the place but I’ve never heard anything but good things about the people that live there and I’ve heard that they’re generous and kind and always willing to allow you a peek in at their way of life. Can’t wait to see it all for myself one day, especially Salvation Mountain. I know there are pictures of it all over the internet but I want to be able to witness it and enjoy it for myself and see all the work that Leonard put into it. He seemed like such a kind and amazing man. Anyway, like I said, great video and thanks for sharing! :-)

Very interesting video. From the appearance of so many Christian references in Slab City, if the residents actually live up to the signs and symbols, it is probably some of the safest real estate on earth. If you were to get killed there, it would seem you would be more likely to be killed by yet another outsider. Perhaps a drifter from Vegas. Lol. With the obvious outward appearance of a religious community, I would actually have been more shocked to find a population of rude & cantankerous people, or possible murderers. I’m from southern Georgia, but have traveled all around in this area, Death Valley, Mojave, Joshua Tree, time & again. I’ve never noticed any sign or info mentioning the Salton Sea or we would have definitely given it a tour out of sheer curiosity. Looks to be an eerie and novel place, even if a bit short on visitors centers, gas stations, and hotels. I kinda like that aspect though. Lol.
