    I know the lady speaking of the talipia. She used to own Camp-Run-Muck bar and convenience store. It was a fun place to hang out at on the weekends when I wanted to get out of the San Diego hustle and bustle. Sometimes I'd stay at the Sea & Sun Motel a couple of blocks from there. This was at Desert Shores on the west bank of the Salton Sea.

    IN THE 1980S , the salton sea was dying , now looking at the current environment it looks like it will be a drying sea.... a big dry salty playa in 30 more years,,,,... California is sooo past peak prosperity..... a lot of people there are in denial,,,,,

    By watching videos about the Salton Sea, I've figured out that, as a reasonable estimate, it would take the removal of enough salt to account for as much as 100 Great Pyramids of Giza, to bring the lake of the Salton Sea to normal salinity, Enough salt, at 17,000,000 tons per annum, with which to salt the roads of the US, for the next 35-years.

    What needs to be done is a dam cutting the Sea in half. One half will be increasingly fresher water over time, the other half will be an overflow mineral salt sump.

    The lady about 7 minutes in makes me chuckle because she honestly thinks that the tilapia (or whatever it is) is really valuable and that someone would or could commercially fish the salton sea.....a little deluded, her thinking is. They could probably dragnet the entire lake and it wouldnt be enough to make a living. Not to mention they are likely contaminated as all hell.

      I certainly wouldn't eat a fish that came from the Salton Sea. It is one of the most polluted bodies of water in the world. Look up the "New River." It is the most polluted river in the US. It is full of raw sewage, industrial waste, and contains germs that cause serious illnesses in very high concentrations. The New River flows right into the Salton Sea. There are videos here on youtube about the New River.

    Why don't people physically tear down the derelict houses? I'd be out their with a sledgehammer, an axe and so on. Then I'd BURN up the crap that is littering the landscape. The metal could be piled somewhere and eventually recycled. The point is YOU RESIDENTS of Salton Sea are ON YOUR OWN. Do something for yourselves. You talk of a a nice community, geez, a lot of what is there looks like a freaking graveyard. I saw a PBS documentary that stated that the fish in the sea are infected with botulism and so on. How unhealthy is that lake anyway? I know the sea has massive die offs of fish in the summers. Anyway, what a mess.

      I agree there many solutions to this. Property clean-ups, reducing agricultural toxin inputs, mandate that any sewage going in be treated. The county could enjoy increased property taxes after spending some money on this. Many people live here and they seem to enjoy the area.

      Judging how that man was filling up his cooler in the video I would say ,Yes.
      However I don't think I would care to eat them seeing how farmers flush their fields with some of the water that's entering the lake. You see farmers, they spray pesticides on their crops to control insects and weeds. Being in a desert there is the inevitable evaporation from the dry desert winds. That constant evaporation will tend to concentrate those pesticides in the water over time. There is no place for the chemicals to go so their levels have to be going up over time. That shit ends up in the fish. You know? That man catching all those fish might have a small store where he sells them. Not saying he does but that was a lot of fish filling that cooler. If I see small fish like that in a few hundred miles from that lake, I would think twice and then pass on buying them. Just saying.
      I suppose one could send a fish to a testing lab somewhere and find out if they are safe to eat. Interesting question though.

    • @sailingsolar

      ***** Avian Botulism spikes every August when the water temps are at their annual highs. That is what mostly drives the annual die offs. That and Oxygen levels drop with hotter water not being able to hold as much oxygen as cooler water. Been going on since the 90's. At least.

    • @alicehallam7949
      @alicehallam7949 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sailingsolar
      I heard that...the botulism in the birds comes because of a yearly algae bloom due to the heated water. The fish eat the algae, and botulism is fatal. I don't think this type of die-off is unique to the Salton Sea, but "doom and gloomers" make it sound that way.
      Great post, thank you.

    Denial isn't just a river in Egypt...apparently it's a sea in Imperial Valley too...And FYI to you idiots pulling fish out of the Salton Sea...The New River flows into that water from Mexico...INTO IT! The Salton Sea is 240 feet below sea level...That equals toilet bowl...that's not salt...It's shit and piss...the fish are choking on it all the way to the shoreline where they beach themselves and die. Fukashima fish are less toxic.

    Instead of putting straw bales on the retreating shoreline (which does nothing) why not build wetland habitat along the entire length of the New River and Alamo River? That gives the birds somewhere to go. With regards to the Salton Sea why not increase the salinity by adding seawater from the gulf of California. Ever been to the Dead Sea? It is a tourism destination and has salinity much greater than the Salton Sea. Cover the entire length of Salton Sea lake bed with high salinity water and the air quality will get better. As the salt content of the Salton Sea increase you can incorporate salt harvesting just like they do at the Dead Sea. Anyone who thinks they are going to "restore" the Salton Sea to what it was in the 1960s is an idiot. Any solution that requires constant input of money to make work is foolish. Water from the Gulf of California flows down hill so there is no energy input. In fact you can generate energy with hydroelectric potential.
