When the centre of Hanley was pedestrianised and the Potteries shopping centre opened in March 1988 Hanley was such a nice town centre to visit. It slowly went down hill from 1992 onwards.
The town was fine up until about 2010 and then there's been a steady decline; things have kicked into overdrive in the past three to four years; I have never seen so many homeless people and addicts on the streets.
@@bobgenghiskhan2499 Pedestrianisation isn't the problem, nobody ever drove from shop to shop, they parked in one place and walked round (or took a bus in). The problem is the lack of free or very low cost car parking, when you can go to Festival Park or Wolstanton Retail Park and park for nothing.
I finally moved out of Hanley last year I couldn't take anymore of the druggies and the depressing state the town has become. For a city centre on a Saturday this is pitiful. I now live in Yorkshire and was the best move I made. Sad to leave in a way. I loved Stoke when I was growing up but now it has nothing to offer.

I guess it's all been said in the comments, but like mary i remember when Hanley was the place to go, in the 70s & 80s, i lived in Etruria in the early 80s and used to frequent Hanley a lot, i moved back to my home town of Leek 15yrs ago, never go to Hanley any more, im so sad to see how run down its become 😢
4m09s. The four stories above Boden's Newsagents was my Uni Halls of Residence- Thompson House- in 2000-2001. Hanley was a great place to live back then, busy at the weekends and the nitelife was absolutely buzzing. It's such a shame to see what has happened.
Not looking too bad in parts Thanks for showing the old town Not visited there for a long time but to be fair the weather is miserable always Some of the flats which could house people if renovated no need to keep building Say there is a housing shortage People could live there
I lived in Hanley for a year back in 1987 to '88. Never ever been back, but I"m sorry to see the way it has apparently gone. I lived on Lichfield Street in what was a grotty house that I know was later slum-cleared. Not sure if that particular land was ever properly redeveloped - it was opposite a factory that I think made industrial rubber goods. I recall Hanley being the tidiest of the five towns and spent many hours in its park. Now I'm back in Hull - another city with a not particularly good reputation, but you get the feeling that Hull is at least on an upward trajectory. Not a single TH-cam video I have seen about Stoke gives that impression. So sad.
It's a shame what Hanley has become, it used to be a nice place. Now there are so many boarded up places. The state of the old bus station and all the dustheads around there. Nobody says let's go up 'anley duck anymore.
One a separate rant. Wilko's - there was a public enquiry as to why the Wilkinson family wound up the business. But, the biggest mistake - closing the business months before Christmas. Don't they realize they could've kept the business afloat for a while longer, if only to get the staff through that difficult period? They were desperate to offload it, and I bet they personally walked away with lasting assets. Very sad.
I was born in Hanley. Left Stoke-on-Trent in the 1980s. Hanley is largely unrecognisable to me today but with one exception, The Market Tavern pub, my old social haunt. Can’t believe it’s still there and it looks exactly the same ❤️
Was shocked how many shops were empty at the Potteries centre. Appreciate it was January but back in the day at 3PM it would be rammed in Hanley in the 1980's on a Saturday. So sad. All the retail is in Festival Park these days. Yes that Yates and the bars and restaurants in that cul-de-sac was the place to go. It has since burnt down after your video so that road is closed off when I walked past as I was in Hanley for business.
What a decline i remember it from the 50s and 60s we used have a great day out with my mother now a sad reflection definitely not a place to visit now unless you want mugged

Not exactly the "metropolis" it used to be is it? .... am surprised with that footfall the shops presently there are still open. Nick won't mind the lack of footfall though ... he looks like he's on a mission bless 'im. ;)
It did used to be that you could consider Hanley/Stoke an in-between for Birmingham and Manchester, like we had some decent chain stores in the Potteries centre and it used to be bustling. Nowadays it's dead. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the Potteries centre got used for housing or was bulldozed to make room for housing because there is just so much unused space there.
As sad and run down as parts of Hanley may look, there is still something verey endearing about it. 'Anybody know if there is aone pub in Hanley where Valiant supporters go on match days?

At 5 minutes it's Radio Stoke, not Signal, just pointing that out. In the 90's where Yate's was, I remember a bar called the Pig & Truffle.
