It sounded from an interview with her manager, that they genuinely said they'd take the 33% pay-cut that the whole show was getting (overall). Because, she really didn't want to leave. To be honoust also, that looks like a fantastic job really.
I feel sad for her too. Apparently they even said to her that they’ll survive without her and she’s even banned from the studios apparently. Why though she did so much for the show and now the bosses are treating her like she’s done something wrong.
@@alexlazebat839 she wasn’t but she’s been on the show since the early 90s and has surpassed Carol through years being on Countdown (not sure about episodes though because she didn’t become permanent lexicographer until 2003 and she took maternity leave in 2007)
The last Countdown Conundrum revealed during Carol's last episode was ERACLOSES, which is very fitting for the last episode before Carol left. (Era closes is similar to era ends)
It's really sad that Carol's departure from the show was not under amicable circumstances. And they took a big risk in having both Carol and Des depart at the same time. Plus a new look to the show when it returned, could have seen big rejection from the audience. As it turned out, it seems that the format is able to take the hits, so long as the game and the general attitude remains the same. But I don't think the Richard and Carol partnership will ever be bettered.
You can see very clearly throughout this video and all the parts of the episode, that Carol is emotionally angry and upset about the fact that this was her last show. It's just a pity that she was just carelessly forced out like that. It could have been a lot harder for Des even though he wasn't forced out like Carol, he simply chose to leave in order to do other stuff. I always hope maybe one day they'll bring Carol back for a day or two for in Dictionary Corner.
It’s very unlikely to happen. I’ve read an article that says she doesn’t watch the show at all or even miss it other than the good times she had with Richard back in the day.
I know this is an old comment but Carol was 22 when she started on Countdown and Rachel Riley was older than her when she started so I don't think it was ageist or a big f off, it was just the beginning of a new era in the programme. Plus you could say that no one could of replace Richard Whiteley but the show is still going strong, change is inevitable although it is unfortunate how some things change.
No she was told to take a 90% pay cut... A basic F you, they also told her they survived without Richard (Whitely) they can survive without her!!! Disgusting way to treat someone after all them years!
I've noticed how in both Richard and Carol's last programmes, the conundrums seem to represent it, Richard Whiteley conundrum: LIFEFAIDS = Falsified Carol Vorderman conundrum: ERACLOSES = Casserole pretty strange huh
Richards was the only strange one as nobody expected him to pass away when that episode was recorded, so it was entirely coincidental. Carols on the other hand, it was known she was leaving the show so was done deliberately to represent that
I thought she was earning 200k a year at that time. She's likely living the lifestyle of someone whose earning that much. 33% pay cut fair enough, but it can be hard to adapt if 90% of your income evaporates overnight.
It was a Catch 22 situation after 26 years on the show, take a 90% pay cut, or don’t renew your contract - was told due a reduction in advertising revenue. It was her choice to leave, and hers only, neither sorry for her. That’s life.
Countdown was never the same without Carol... In my opinion, she made the show! I've tried watching the new ones without her, but I can't, the energy isn't there anymore. A very sad day indeed...
For your information, that trophy is dedicated to the memory of a Countdown icon that passed some time ago. It has been presented to the winner since 2005.
I am torn. On the one hand, if she really did receive £900,000 a year, that's ridiculous. That's way too much for the job she was doing. £250,000 would be a lot. On the other hand, if they gave her that kind of money every year, they could not possibly expect that she would accept to suddenly work for £90,000.
You are going to need a maths degree and be of reasonable attractiveness. Not to mention you're in the public eye. So you'll have to deal with being constantly recognised. So I'd say 100-200k is quite reasonable for that job.
the show was not the same since this loss of richard he was mr countdown and the show shouldve ended there and then as it could never be the same again
IF Countdown was having its very last episode a good conundrum for it would be ENDOFITAL. A bit too bad it doesn't have room for ALL but that's okay, isn't it? Can anyone work out what that conundrum is?
So sad to see Carol go. She is and will always remain the Queen of Countdown. Its just not the same without both her and Richard. And kudos to Des, he was a very worthy replacement, the 2 of them would have kept the fires burning for many a year. But alas as the great dumbing down of Britain prevails amongst subversion, Countdown degenerates to an all time low, with a cringeworthy 8 out of 10 cats. Which is just too painful to watch .
Carol Vordaman only chose to leave Countdown because she didn't feel the same co-hosting Countdown after Richard Whiteley died in 2005; she didn't like Des Lynam that much because he had no sense of humour, and although she did get along well with Des O'Connor, she couldn't bear to bond with another presenter, so she decided to leave Countdown at the same time as Des O'Connor.
@jeffrey44 mmm sort of, I still don't like her she's still dresses slutty, I was more angry because I dont like change, especially because it was an ageist issue, no-one can really truly replace Carol I mean like she was there for 26 years and to hire someone else way younger who isn't as good as Carol is like a big 'f**k off' to her. Jeff Stelling is brilliant though he's hilarious!
i was sad when Carol left, after so many wonderful years and now we have rachel riley...whom i'm very fond off. i love countdown
I felt so bad for Carol here. She clearly didn't want to leave, but being asked to take a 90% pay cut with no negotiations is ridiculous.
It sounded from an interview with her manager, that they genuinely said they'd take the 33% pay-cut that the whole show was getting (overall). Because, she really didn't want to leave. To be honoust also, that looks like a fantastic job really.
Well Obviously they wanted to get rid of Carol cos they wanted someone younger to fill her shoes. Not that I'm complaining I like Rachel just as much.
@@sexydudeuk2172 i like her

You could say it’s the Final Countdown
I don't look forward to the day they have to replace Susie.
but she wasn't an original

or maybe for a throwback special where she replaces rachel for a show or two
Funny how the conundrum was ERACLOSES
Brought a tear to my eye
Susie Dent has been in Countdown since 1992
countdown will be never be the same without des and carol
ooh carol you are best ever and I feel sad you about you leaving countdown also I like you carol very much for your hearts.
How come Les got a best bits montage and carol didn’t
Painful to watch, so sad to see Carol and Des to leave...
While Carol is a legend, Rachel has done a really good job!
This episode is the last time I watched Countdown

I've never noticed before that the conundrum was homage to Carol lmao.
She was countdown.. Stunning and cleaver..

I just noticed the Connumdrum actually said
ERACLOSES (ERA CLOSES)
Countdown returns to floor when it's new presenters on 12th January
floor?!?!
I was glad they got rid of the pink striped set I never liked it
Didn’t Carol just refuse to agree a pay deal with the show’s producers. I loved Carol she was brilliant but nobody is replaceable.

nice anagram solving website buddy
Am I the only person that thinks that Casserole was Carol's last conundrum is hilarious?
wait a second, isn't there a clip on here of charlie using a certain w word in one of his letters games?
u not seen rachel riley? ur missing out m8
Instead of goodnight- the final word of the season was "sorry" - this is as close as we will get to a Canadian adaptation
@mclarenguy22 There is two, deflation and defoliant
lol at the awkward expressions of the contestants at the end
what a lemon the winner is just standing there with his trophy - where's the clap for Carol man?
He couldn't clap holding a trophy......
He could have held it under one arm
or put it down on the desk for a moment.
I observed his foot tapping before the credits. I think he was tapping his foot to the clapping as an alternative...
i don't get it.
I'd rather have £1000 than a shit trophy
Miserable bastard! LOL - That made me laugh! :-D
For your information, that trophy is dedicated to the memory of a Countdown icon that passed some time ago. It has been presented to the winner since 2005.

I think that should be the conundrum for the very last episode of Countdown (if that were ever to happen)
Very sad. Carol's good and so is Rachel.
Never be a presenter like her again...
Who noticed how the conundrum was given to the contestants
Carol should come back on 8 out of 10 cats, as one of the Celebs :-)
Its 8 out of 10 cats. It took you 84 years for this correction.

Ariel Lee to be honest I liked rachel alot at first, but watching these old countdown videos has made me appreciate carol alot more I agree with you

They also wanted to bring in Rachel Riley so they made Carl take a 90% pay cut which she refused and she left the show instead
I just seemed quite an anti-climactic word to end Carol's reign.
ah, the wit...
boo fing hoo.. I would cry to if I had a 90% pay cut..
@jeffrey44 prob crying because shes lost her £1million a year salary lol
