Carl, you should really get and read a copy of the factory service manual, there are specific loosening and tightening sequence for the head bolts so the head doesn't warp. Also I'd go easy with the rattle gun on bolts in 45 year old aluminum. Cant wait for more videos.
I wish you and your family a happy holiday season and the merriest and best 2023! (and a lot of videos about wasting your money on bikes of coarse ;-) )
49 minute mark, Carl that was an awesome physical demonstration of the inner workings of the Z1-R Tranny. I would bet that your the first on TH-cam to show just what an amazing mechanical marvel this tranny is. I found it amazing. I fully understood your explanation and I don't know if your going to film the tranny being brought back to life by the specialist or the lower engine end being worked on. I hope so and I think that would add a lot to what you have already performed. I was always wondering just what tricks these engine and tranny, dare I say mechanics, do to make your engine appear as though it just came off the line. Great Video. Thanks, Gerard👍💪
Carl, it is highly likely that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the transmission. These transmissions will not shift into 2nd gear without centrifugal force. You cannot shift them into 2nd gear without the motor turning over. Hope this helps. BTW, I have owned a ‘78 Z1-R since new and also own ‘75 Z-B and ran into the same issue that you did. Fortunately, I searched the internet and discovered that there was nothing wrong with the trans before I tore it apart. Good luck and I am enjoying the videos.😊
How's the temperature over there? I read that the whole of the US will suffer from temps way below zero (Celcius): Are all the engine's depleted from plain water or supplied with anti-freeze ?. Just to prevent the enginges from freezing to scrap metal...
Late December in Massachusetts -4 to +1 C is normal. Today is an oddball due to a storm coming in, 14 degrees C. Yes everyone uses anti-freeze in the Northeast where I live.
Carl you are a legend, the best KZ motor strip down on TH-cam.

Also I came across the same thing with the 2nd gear and found out that that is just the way the bike is made.

Thank you yes I eventually googled it and figured it out.
23:50, as 'we' say in dutch: "kapot gerepareerd!", meaning make it worse while making an effort to repair it. ;-)
