Yep, riding the tube is limiting in so many ways. I hang my needles pretty far and use my eyes to “measure” distance from the tube and via the total needle hang as you describe. There is also some feel to it. I also use my finger that is just under the tube/machine to keep my depth steady and consistent, I rest it on the skin as a guide to keep that needle steady. Good stretch is very important also, I get “tennis elbow” feel in my left arm from stretching 😂 great video and tips!! ✌️

Today was the very first day that I held a tattoo machine and practiced on fake skin. I've been lucky enough for the tattooist, who owns the local studio here where I live, to give me a bit of a shot at practicing in his shop today. It was such a great learning experience! So different to using pencils and sketching on paper. I did a totally shit job on the fake skin haha, but I was invited back to the shop tomorrow to keep practicing. This video is so helpful! Thanks so much for posting this. I really need to get some tips and to learn more and I'm going to try some of the of these techiques tomorrow. I tried to do lining and shading today. I'll admit that the result was pretty horrible, and it was really difficult to do. But anyway, it was my very first day and I have absolutely no experience tattooing, but having said that, I loved every bit of today, and I'm so excited and keen to improve and do more tomorrow.
With the inception of my expedition in to tattooing being but a few days - despite my background in graphics, I am a complete novice - I am gathering a phenomenal amount of knowledge and wisdom from your explanations and demonstrations. Inking skin may seem to be a mechanical process; however, and it isn't just about confidence, rather the reason of thought - the experience - behind the function of many tattooing aspects that you explain cleanly and purposefully, allowing clarity and certainty to guide me and help remove my initial hesitations. Great video, I used to ride the tube a lot, if it was a long line and not a lot around it it worked great but if it was around detail work or small lines it was a no go for me.
With metal tubes if you ride the tube it can make a double line from ink dropping in where the tube tip drags across the skin. It was also seen as lack of a steady hand and good eye. This is good information to put out.
I like to float my needle tip, if I didn't do deep enough into a line, I can always go over it again with good precision! Great vid & thanks for more tips!

I think two other factors make a big difference. Stroke length of the machine and the voltage you're running at. You might line with a 3RL on the Valhalla at 6.5v for clean lines. But put in an 11RL I may bump that up to 7 or 7.2v. There's a big difference from lining with say a 2.5mm stroke, which I rarely do, vs lining with a machine at 3.9-4.2mm stroke, which are my preferred liners.
Absolutely i think it goes without sayin that machine stroke and even the type of motor the machine has can make a big difference when it comes to lining. But to often we want to blame the machine or needles and what not when most of the time it comes down to us as people making the errors and having the difficulties and not so much the machine. But again Really Really great point Dan and thank you for sharing that!! 🤘🙏🤘
I can say I've done all of those. I prefer the way that you said, kinda in the middle. All that went out the window on Sunday when I did my first knee cap. I could not figure out why the skin was not holding ink. I eventuality got it to hold. But man knees are nothing like other skin 😆

I only ride the tube when packing colour in big areas tbh but it's how I got started but now I like seeing the exact placement of the needle when outlining .
Man, I've been tattooing on fake skin for 2 and a half months now. Not gonna lie tattooing is really difficult to do neatly and safely. Appreciate all the videos, need as much advice and practice as I can get.
Thanks man I really appreciate the info. I’ve only been at it a couple months and don’t have the time to do a full on apprenticeship so I have to learn by trial and error. So far anything I’ve done on fake skin or myself has turned out pretty good. Yesterday I did a piece on my wife and it was fuckin horrible. I previously was setting my stroke at 3.6 to 4.2 , volts at 7 to 7.5 … but learned yesterday machine won’t pick up ink in the tube after about 15 min. So I shortened the stroke to the lowest setting . It helped a lot but man this is definitely a process . So again thank you all your info is invaluable!

You can ride the tube, why not…It’s just one of techniques…Simple and clean if the artist know what he is doing…Only contra is that you can’t do the details with the tube riding…Proper speed ( voltage ) combined with the needle position and hand speed is more important than the line technique you use…Good video dude 🤙🤝

I started to use my middle finger to keep a consistent needle depth by placing it right next to the tip of the cartridge on the skin, and then moving my hole hand along the line. Even though its very exhausting for the hand, but it helped me a lot in terms of consistency. Did you ever try this yourself and did it work for you? Again much appreciation for what you do✊
Your videos are always helpful... I would like to see a video on the best ways to hold the machine with the fingers.. How to place hand and fingers on the machine.. Im so messy and not so accurate and im not sure if im holding it right. I have long skinny fingers😏

Get tattooed by the person you wish to apprentice first. Get to know the tattooer and the studio staff, make a genuine connection and one day ask him/her/they to look at your portfolio and just ask for feedback or tips on where to get a good apprenticeship. If it was meant to be, they may ask you to work for them, or even guide you somewhere that would be suited better for you. You will also get some feedback on your portfolio from good tattooers. Be persistent and don’t give up easily. I’m an apprentice too. If you are hungry, you will make it. No matter how you do it. The apprentice path isn’t for everyone and many legendary tattooers were self taught too so don’t be dismayed, many tattooers don’t want competition and may try to put you off, so that’s why get tattooed by the artists first and ask many questions and get to see if the tattooer is genuine, humble and kind, because many mediocre tattooers aren’t. Don’t know if this helps. Just saying what I have learned. Good luck!
I definitely watched ur first video did a practice skin hated it then prepped to do my first tattoo on my ankle. Helped me realize need depth and how it changes and so much more. Was i scared to fuck up or blow my lines yup the whole time but i think i did pretty great and now my dad is letting me use him a practice (his choice cuz i was just gonna use myself). Fakes skins have taught me how much damage to deep of a needle can cause….i tatted the skin and my 300$ nightstand 😭lessons learn knowledge gained
Hi Dave, I’ve been loving watching your channel, and it’s helped me give several tattoos, each one getting better than the last. I’ve been using a coil machine, and was wondering if you had any suggestions for needle packs that offer a wide variety, between shaders and liners, kinda like a “kit” or variety pack, ect to try different needles as I’m learning. Have you tried long taper short taper bugpins textured curved mags n flat mags aswell as the 3RL for whip shading,stipple and ofcourse 15RS for linework? I've seen pick n mix type needles where you choose different brands and styles, surf the Web. Try 5 needles of 5 different types on evil Bay but from an actual tattoo shop. Lots there.
I'm using traditional Spaulding and Rogers coil machines. They sell a variety of premade needles on bars and stainless or disposable plastic ink tubes. They're very low cost, and you can just order a selection of different needle bars and tubes. Which I've done and been trying out on synthetic skin for a bit now. Haven't used any on actual living skin yet, but pretty soon I'll be ready. One thing I discovered is that a higher needle count will not necessarily lay a heavier line. It depends wether the needles are left laying parallel or pulled tight together at the points. So a three round can lay a heavier line than a tight five. You could order one of every type of needle bar available to try each one out and see what they do. They would run in any machine that uses traditional needle bars.
Hi Dave! Could you by any chance do a video about varied lineweight? Like when lines go from thick to thin (this is done with anime pieces a lot especially) and how you normally would attack that without going over lines/overworking the skin too much?
Couple questions I have.... What's the importance of using A&D or the like when tattooing? Is it normal for the needle to hang out of the machine when you first load the cartridge? I don't know if it's my new cartridges or my pen but for some reason no matter what my needle is hanging out. Ever happened to you?

Great that you ask that question. I dont know either, so I tested them on my skin just to see what the real difference is. That video should be coming out next weed as it is almost healed and I should be able to tell you one way or another by then.

This is the first video I’ve seen of your channel. As a professional tattooer of 14, soon to be 15 years, I have to say you seem like a genuinely nice guy. That being said, I’m pretty amazed you didn’t mention the most important aspect of lining once in this video. I’m not going to say what it is here because I think if any of your fans are too daft to have a clue what I’m talking about, which I guarantee they don’t and you might not as well, they probably don’t need to know anyway. I also think it is rather unfortunate you are providing links not only for equipment, but codes to make that equipment even more available. Now believe me, I’m not a tattooing gatekeeper. Honestly I could care less how flooded the industry is with wannabes. If anything, they don’t take business away, they provide it with all the new tattoo fixes and coverups that come my way. Tattooing is what you make it and that’s what drew me to it the most. But it is insanely irresponsible and a bit sociopathic to be perfectly ok with helping provide complete strangers and unqualified dumbasses the keys to tools that will only perpetuate their extremely unsafe tattooing practices. Hepatitis is very real. And so is just fucking someone’s tattoo up.
What is the best way and materials to hand copy your stencil from a paper drawing, money is hard to come by to get a stencil machine and am looking for the easiest and most effective way to copy over to the stencil.
I have a question. I really want to be a tattoo artist and Im trying to get an apprenticeship and I was wondering, with a portfolio, would it be better to have a mixture of digital designs and paper or just all out with either? Also with digital what is the best software to use?? I have a wacom tablet and I use photoshop and illustrator. Should I invest in an ipad and procreate? Thats all i see on social media when it comes to tattoo designs.
What do you do for ghosting? I keep doing ghosting and I cant figure out why I dont have 'full" lines, I need to go back over and over on the same lines & I keep seeing the ghosting anyway. What's your suggestion? Thank you
Why is lining done with longer strokes? Does it literally put the ink deeper in the skin? I'm using a mast flip and it just seems that if I want smooth shading or pepper effect to use a shorter stroke and if I want a more spaced out stipple look to use a longer stroke. I know I'm comparing lining and shading but it's my best example.
so i was tattooing my sister on her fore arm and i noticed that her skin was really stretchy and literally as soon as id touch her with the needle, the skin on her whole arm would shake and i wouldnt be able to see the stencil, any tips for that?

Great video as always. Thanks a lot. I started to use my middle finger to keep a consistent needle depth by placing it right next to the tip of the cartridge on the skin, and then moving my hole hand along the line. Even though its very exhausting for the hand, but it helped me a lot in terms of consistency. Did you ever try this yourself and did it work for you? Again much appreciation for what you do✊
Your videos are always helpful... I would like to see a video on the best ways to hold the machine with the fingers.. How to place hand and fingers on the machine.. Im so messy and not so accurate and im not sure if im holding it right. I have long skinny fingers😏

Hello I'm super new to tattooing and I just want to say, You make this look easy lol. Thank you for posting your videos. They really help me figure out what works for me and that there is no one way of doing things.. I don't have the time to get a traditional apprenticeship, So your vids help me follow my dream. for now I'm staying on fake skin and practice, practice, practice. NO problem Tsubu glad the video and channel could help you out. I have a video talking about my experience during my apprenticeship, but I may have to try and make a video talking more about it for those who are trying to find a good one.
Get tattooed by the person you wish to apprentice first. Get to know the tattooer and the studio staff, make a genuine connection and one day ask him/her/they to look at your portfolio and just ask for feedback or tips on where to get a good apprenticeship. If it was meant to be, they may ask you to work for them, or even guide you somewhere that would be suited better for you. You will also get some feedback on your portfolio from good tattooers. Be persistent and don’t give up easily. I’m an apprentice too. If you are hungry, you will make it. No matter how you do it. The apprentice path isn’t for everyone and many legendary tattooers were self taught too so don’t be dismayed, many tattooers don’t want competition and may try to put you off, so that’s why get tattooed by the artists first and ask many questions and get to see if the tattooer is genuine, humble and kind, because many mediocre tattooers aren’t. Don’t know if this helps. Just saying what I have learned. Good luck!

I definitely watched ur first video did a practice skin hated it then prepped to do my first tattoo on my ankle. Helped me realize need depth and how it changes and so much more. Was i scared to fuck up or blow my lines yup the whole time but i think i did pretty great and now my dad is letting me use him a practice (his choice cuz i was just gonna use myself). Fakes skins have taught me how much damage to deep of a needle can cause….i tatted the skin and my 300$ nightstand 😭lessons learn knowledge gained

Hi Dave, I’ve been loving watching your channel, and it’s helped me give several tattoos, each one getting better than the last. I’ve been using a coil machine, and was wondering if you had any suggestions for needle packs that offer a wide variety, between shaders and liners, kinda like a “kit” or variety pack, ect to try different needles as I’m learning. Have you tried long taper short taper bugpins textured curved mags n flat mags aswell as the 3RL for whip shading,stipple and ofcourse 15RS for linework? I've seen pick n mix type needles where you choose different brands and styles, surf the Web. Try 5 needles of 5 different types on evil Bay but from an actual tattoo shop. Lots there.

I'm using traditional Spaulding and Rogers coil machines. They sell a variety of premade needles on bars and stainless or disposable plastic ink tubes. They're very low cost, and you can just order a selection of different needle bars and tubes. Which I've done and been trying out on synthetic skin for a bit now. Haven't used any on actual living skin yet, but pretty soon I'll be ready. One thing I discovered is that a higher needle count will not necessarily lay a heavier line. It depends wether the needles are left laying parallel or pulled tight together at the points. So a three round can lay a heavier line than a tight five. You could order one of every type of needle bar available to try each one out and see what they do. They would run in any machine that uses traditional needle bars.

Hi Dave! Could you by any chance do a video about varied lineweight? Like when lines go from thick to thin (this is done with anime pieces a lot especially) and how you normally would attack that without going over lines/overworking the skin too much?

Triple black is thicker and used more for shading and the regular used more for lining. Good luck!

This is the first video I’ve seen of your channel. As a professional tattooer of 14, soon to be 15 years, I have to say you seem like a genuinely nice guy. That being said, I’m pretty amazed you didn’t mention the most important aspect of lining once in this video. I’m not going to say what it is here because I think if any of your fans are too daft to have a clue what I’m talking about, which I guarantee they don’t and you might not as well, they probably don’t need to know anyway. I also think it is rather unfortunate you are providing links not only for equipment, but codes to make that equipment even more available. Now believe me, I’m not a tattooing gatekeeper. Honestly I could care less how flooded the industry is with wannabes. If anything, they don’t take business away, they provide it with all the new tattoo fixes and coverups that come my way. Tattooing is what you make it and that’s what drew me to it the most. But it is insanely irresponsible and a bit sociopathic to be perfectly ok with helping provide complete strangers and unqualified dumbasses the keys to tools that will only perpetuate their extremely unsafe tattooing practices. Hepatitis is very real. And so is just fucking someone’s tattoo up.

I always count 3mm of the needle out of the tube unless I make a bloody mess with a black pool
Hey brother, how do those Rhein carts work compared to kwadron? Specifically the smaller round mags.
Kwadron is the way to go in my opinion but then again I havent used enough Rhein carts to REALLY know.
What is the best way and materials to hand copy your stencil from a paper drawing, money is hard to come by to get a stencil machine and am looking for the easiest and most effective way to copy over to the stencil.

I really want to be a tattoo artist and Im trying to get an apprenticeship and I was wondering, with a portfolio, would it be better to have a mixture of digital designs and paper or just all out with either? Also with digital what is the best software to use?? I have a wacom tablet and I use photoshop and illustrator. Should I invest in an ipad and procreate? I use a few machines but in this video I believe I was using the CNC XWE.
Tattooing under the big toe. I find the ink lays in but after a couple of weeks it has all bled out? What am I doing wrong?😢
What do you do for ghosting? I keep doing ghosting and I cant figure out why I dont have 'full" lines, I need to go back over and over on the same lines & I keep seeing the ghosting anyway. What's your suggestion? Thank you
Why is lining done with longer strokes? Does it literally put the ink deeper in the skin? I'm using a mast flip and it just seems that if I want smooth shading or pepper effect to use a shorter stroke and if I want a more spaced out stipple look to use a longer stroke. I know I'm comparing lining and shading but it's my best example.
so i was tattooing my sister on her fore arm and i noticed that her skin was really stretchy and literally as soon as id touch her with the needle, the skin on her whole arm would shake and i wouldnt be able to see the stencil, any tips for that?
You NEED to stretch the skin a LOT if its bouncing then its not stretched properly or enough.
