You are really knowledgeable about the Mississippi River. It's about a mile from my house. I bet I've listened to many boats going up river at Memphis. The sound was relaxing and I enjoyed the engine hum me to sleep as a kid. Thank you Captain for showing us part of what u know and do!
The more I watch these videos, the more I realize I missed my calling. Drove them damned ol' trucks, instead of goin' to the river. Makes me wish life had "do overs"........ Oh well. Thank's for the videos Capt.
Hey marktwain Thanks for posting these . I'm going to be kayaking the length of the Mississippi in 2 years and understanding what barges should be doing in a given situation might very well save my life
For a long list of very good reasons. Before I knew the river and it’s history, I didn’t fully understand that also,, As you learn, they have made cutoffs and such, and will continue as they can. The river dictates a lot.
marktwained Thank you for the info. I’ve been boating around Pittsburgh for 30 years. Learned a lot about how tows operate from your videos. Didn’t know about the flanking rudders until you explained them. Keep up the Good work.
Thank you for responding! Are those Z-drives or rudders on the vessel? Another thing, do you typically have to go in full reverse to pivot around the turn and increase your turning radius?

I live in nc but my mom grew up on the river in Mississippi, so I've always been fascinated with the rivers size and power
a maestro on the sticks!
Nice, slow and safe..great video Capt!
Awesome job Capt Kyle
Great job cap! marktwained man would I love a chance at the sticks of one of those big boats.
What about ùp river...? I imagine its not real easy steering?
On major curves like that, do you normally let the current just guide the boat through the curve-steering and all? I always wondered that?
Adam Fowler if set up correctly the river does most of the work, but flanking is an art that takes time to learn
I must admit i was pretty scared going around that curve near Cape, when you see them aiming straight for the bank.
I've decked on the ol' brittney. One of Westerns nicer boats for sure. Broke in and found out what tramping really was

Good job, nice video!!!
marktwained.. why doesn't the core just cut across those crazy switchbacks and straighten them out??
For a long list of very good reasons.

How does the swing gauge work? What is it referenced from?
Shows the rate of turn in degrees per minute

I have actually learned more about my job, by answering questions. Explaining things helps me to learn subjects more in depth. 👍🏻
WAS DOWN AT HENRY, IL ON 3/20/19 AND FOUND 3 NAVIGATION BOUYS STRANDED IN THE RIVER BOTTOMS
What type of propulsion units are you using? How much horsepower? How do you handle the turn going the opposite direction?
In this video I was on 3,850 hp vessel. Northbound we run out wide on this turn to reduce the angle and widen turn as much as we can.
Thank you for responding! Are those Z-drives or rudders on the vessel? Another thing, do you typically have to go in full reverse to pivot around the turn and increase your turning radius?
+Johnray Strickland stationary wheels with kort nozzles, and rudders ahead of wheels for backing, behind for steering.
We get vessel to speed of the river current for the turn. Back harder at times, and none at others.
