    I planted garlic in a raised bed last fall. They have been a no show this spring. It was one of the coldest winters that we have had with the frost line going down 7 feet. I was wondering if I can get away with a spring planting. Thanks for sharing! Happy Mother's Day!

    • @LearnToGrow1

      dakotabob10 Hi, yes plant them right now. Hardneck garlic does better in cooler climate, so plant a softneck variety. Next fall, mulch your garlic bed with at least 6 inches of dried leaves, straw or whatever you use. We had a cold winter as well down to the teens unusual for us! Thank you very much for the greeting by the way! Hope you get them planted soon!

    Hi learn to grow! I love planting cloves of garlic in the spring (Michigan, May to August/October) I put a dozen or so per 24 inch rectangle planter. They wont mature in to heads with multiple cloves. But what I do get is delicious single bulb garlic. They grow to about an inch to an inch and a half in diameter. The sprouts get about 24 inches high by the end of Summer. Then a couple weeks after the sprouts have turned brown, I pull one out and check it. Then after the sprouts have been brown for a couple of weeks, I just keep an eye on the weather and let the bulbs keep growing as long as I can. Excellent mild tasting bulb of garlic, great for cooking.

      @LearnToGrow1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jeffrey, I ended up leaving the bulbs and harvested the following summer. That’s a great idea using the immature bulbs. I did the same with elephant garlic , delicious! Thanks so much for stopping by, have a good night. Stay well and safe!

    Hi Misilla =) Yay, I haven't missed out on the garlic planting. I was going to give it a try but wasn't sure if it would work during the summer. Do I have to wait until I get some sprouts coming from the bulbs or can I just plant them? I bought some beautiful purplish striped garlic from the farmer down the road and was going to experiment with one of the bulbs.

    • @LearnToGrow1

      Debi Lee Hi Debi! No you don't have to wait for it to sprout, just plant right now...Is is a softneck? The hardneck garlic generally does better when planted in the fall (cool climate type). Please forgive me for the late reply! Have fun and thanks for watching :) Misilla

    • @stormsmyst
      @stormsmyst 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Learn To Grow Hi Misilla and No Worries about the response!! =) I have been so busy that I totally forgot I asked. LOL Well, I think I have both types. One I bought from the grocery store and from what I just read those are usually softneck. The other we bought from a farmstand, it has beautiful purple streaks down the sides of the bulbs. So, not sure if that is hardneck or not. I do know that there was a small stem from the middle of the later that was very hard. If that helps. So I suppose the grocery store garlic I can plant now. =)

    Hello 'Learn To Grow'. I liked your video. (Easy to follow, and instructive). I've planted cloves of Walmart purchased garlic. (I think it's grown in Calif, and cloves have slight pink skin). Planted it on 12Mar16, and last night (3Apr16) it snowed. ¿Does this mean it's lost for the season? Also, I've yet to see it begin to sprout. I don't know if it will grow. Any thoughts welcomed. Thank you and keep up your good work.

      Hello Learn To Grow (Misilla). Thanks for the well wishes. The garlic
      did grow, but not as good as I see in your garden. I believe the
      trouble was an arborvitae tree near the garden area spread its roots and choked out my garlic crop. I can tell, as I had to chop all its roots
      that had spread over the garlic I planted in ~MArch. If I plant garlic
      there again, I'll have to make sure I either cut that tree down, or
      greatly reduce its root system near the plantings. Thanks again for the well wishes. God Bless your home. tonyd\.

      @LearnToGrow1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! I ended up leaving the immature bulbs in the ground and harvested the following season. If they don’t receive enough chilling time, the bulbs will not grow big and fully develop to divide into cloves. They need at least 40 days of of temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit in order to produce robust bulbs. Thanks for watching!

      Thanks.
      Have you tried the stratification (cold treatment) in the refrigerator like with apple seeds? And then planted them?

      Hi Robert, Yes that is true. This was six years ago and it was my second time growing garlic. It was a good lesson and the bulbs were immature, like green mild garlic. Thanks for stopping by. Misilla
