    My partner is an historian, and we live in Edinburgh. He has done a lot of research on this kirkyard, at the behest of the Scottish Government. In fact, this was a graveyard, before there was a kirk there. The population petitioned Mary, Queen of Scots, to build a kirk there, and she granted permission. The land has been built on, and built on for hundreds of years. Every time the kirkyard was full, they would cover it in earth and start burying people again. The kirkyard abuts Candlemaker Row, and used to be the same level as that street, whereas now, it is about a high as a double decker bus. My partner says that a conservative esitmate of people buried in the kirkyard, is about 250,000.
    There is a mass grave there, but the covenanters who are buried there, were mostly hanged at the Grasssmarket, nearby. The monument which has been built for them in Greyfriars Kirkyard was put up some years later due to a political movement which demanded acknowledgement of their unfair deaths. George Mackenzie was actually the first to propose that births, death and marriages were documented in a registry, and he was also a proponent of public libraries.
    Then true story with his mausoleum, and why it is chained up, is that a couple of goths broke in - there are about six or seven people buried in his mausoleum - and stole a skull. They were playing football with it, and the police were summoned by local homeless people. The judge at their trial came down hard on them as Mackenzie was an important historical figure.
    The story of the haunting Mr Ballen told today is a good yarn, but most of it was invented by an enterprising tour guide. The exorcism attempt is factual. Colin Grant did indeed go into the kirkyard, to perform an exorcism, and after his death, the Edinburgh City Council locked up the covenanters prison. The official reason is that homeless people were sleeping in the kirkyard, and since the kirkyard was becoming a tourist location, the homeless sleeping there would look bad.
    It is a shame that they did so, as the homeless who were sleeping there were actually taking care of the kirkyard, and they prevented vandalisms like the goths who stole the skull.
    Gosh, this is a long post, but my partner and I passionate about history, and especially Greyfriars, since my partner has done so much work on it. If you got to the end of this post, thanks for reading.

    That is the cemeterywhere Bobby (a Skye Terrier) laid on his owners grave for 14yrs. Bobby followed the funeral precession and watched his owners coffin lowered into the ground. Bobby would spend every night laying on his owners grave crying. The local townspeople would feed him. When dog catchers tried to catch him for being unlicensed a noble who loved dogs permanently paid for his tags. There is a statue of Bobby near the cemetery as well as a bar named for him.

    I'm no expert, so I'm just gonna say what I see in this photo.
    The photo is taken with extended exposure, no bright camera flash. There's a second point light source to the right of the camera, evident by the glare from the panel beneath the window. It's colder than the rest, likely a maglite or similar flashlight held by the journalist. Looking at the intense and colder exposure of the front of the hand holding the candle, that's probably what he's pointing the flashlight at.
    You can see the red camera indicator, and the cooler light reflection glare, under the window. But the photo itself has a much warmer tone than if that cold light was directly illuminating the shot. It's visible as effects of the prolonged exposure time, not direct angle reflection. Had the latter been the case, the whole image would just be a big lightblob.
    What's seen in the window, is a shadow cast by the celtic cross, being partially illuminated by the narrow beam of the flashlight.

      @pr0xZen หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@vodyannoi At least the way I personally see it and understand the surroundings and context, a major portion of the "issue" causing suspicion here is the camera angle an lighting. But I believe those would be explained by the photo being taken only by prolonged exposure (from the camera orientation perspective), and there being another sharp point light source like s flashlight coming from a different angle. And I believe we have that here. Another conforming possibility is that the shadow is cast by that partial lighting of the priest's hand (that appears not directly reflecting but overexposed but by a/ that second light source, as it's not directly lit parallel to the photo angle).

    I had a reading from Rev Colin Grant at my friends house in the mid eighties, nice gentle man! I also had a strange encounter at the Kirkyard gates maybe a year or so later. My hubby and I had the kids at Edinburgh museum for the day, then we walked along to see Grayfriars Bobby, ( The dog who got freedom of the city) we decided to walk down to the grassmarket to get chips from the chippy, on the way back up Candlemakers row, there’s a side gate into the Cemetery , it was a gorgeous day no wind and no other people in sight! My hubby and the kids were in front of me as we passed the gate, I was at the back taking in the sights, when all of a sudden my bag of chips seemed to be knocked clean out of my hands and landed on the ground! The boys thought it was hilarious that I dropped my food, but, I didn’t drop it! It was knocked out of my hands! That was when I realised we were right outside the side gate to the kirkyard! Couldn’t get out of there fast enough! Not an exceptional story but that was forty years ago and will never forget it! Xx

    I live in Edinburgh, have done for 30 years. Came here to study acting. In 2000 I was employed by the History Chanel to play the role of a Covenantor, myself and another 2 actors - easy gig, paid handsomely for very little work - just sit in one of the cells and looks hungry and miserable.
    Sadly, this was to be my one and only brush with Hollywood.
    Prior to that, as a drama student I slept the night there, drunk as a skunk - taken by the spirit of Smirnoff haha

    I have never had anything pertinent to add to any of these stories until now. Back in the early 90s, I was living and working in Edinburgh and have been to this Kirk, which is quite serene during the day. However, the father of one of the women I worked with used to be the curator of Greyfriar's Kirk, and he had one heck of a story to tell! It was his job to kick up the kirk each night, and open it every morning. He has done so for years and has no issues or experiences. However, one week he felt very uneasy in the kirk as he locked it up, and felt like he was being watched. Then one night, as he was turning out the lights, he saw a woman in strange clothing with a young child. They looked at him, and then the woman said to the child, "Don't be afraid, he can't hurt you." At which point the two of them turned around and walked through the wall of the kirk. My friend's father was so frightened by the experience that he made his son close up in the evenings because he refused to. Apparently, according to my coworker, there had been an orphanage on the spot of Greyfriar's before the kirk. I haven't done the research to prove or disprove that, but I did make a point of visiting the site as soon as I could. It was completely uneventful for me, but I love the stories.

    I actually feel like there's another perspective to this. George being buried there in a grand mausoleum on top of the graves of those he tortured is highly disrespectful . It's entirely possible that the activity is not George himself, but rather the spirits who are angry because of this. Perhaps even both. I feel like George's body should be moved elsewhere in a less spectacular grave and the mausoleum made into a memorial to his victims. Perhaps that would bring them peace and a sense of justice. That is just how I felt through this entire story anyway.

      I'm sorry for your loss, too. Especially since it was the passing of a family member and one so integral to your history. It's sad that your father didn't tell you; do you think that he was trying to protect you from grief or do you suppose he did it for another reason? Either way, it is my belief that your Grandma knows the situation and she wouldn't ever be disappointed with you about it. I don't know what your beliefs are, and I grew up without religion and any thought toward the afterlife. I have experienced so much that is unexplainable, however, that I am lead to realize that death is not the end and merely a gateway to something else. If it were just me and a handful of people, I wouldn't believe this with the conviction of which I do. It is a universal human experience, though, therefore even though it's a fallacy to draw conclusions this way, I can't but lean toward this explanation of what I think happens with us when this mortal body can no longer house us here. I saw something written on a wall that read:
      We do not have a Soul
      We ARE souls
      We HAVE a body
      or something to that effect. And we're made of energy which cannot be created nor destroyed, only transformed. This is from Newton's second law of thermodynamics. So my mom and dad still exist somewhere and that is why I talk to them. I don't care what anyone thinks of me, I know that they're there and that is all that matters to me. Similarly, I know your Grandma is somewhere and would be so happy if you talked to her, too. I have so many instances that confirm their ongoing existence but, for the sake of brevity, I'll have to end this. My brother did the same thing to me, btw, by not letting me know of the passing of beloved friends that we grew up with, and even one of my uncles. I don't know what his motive was but he's done some terribly mean things to me. This is to say that I know that feeling that you're going through, having not been told until so much later. It's a kind of betrayal and it hurts. I'm sorry that you're having such a difficult, stressful time. I'm sending you good vibes. They're waves of relief, happiness and the knowledge that you are going to be fine, they're waves of excitement about your training and a new beginning that can take you to great things! These waves of reassurance are being directed to you in your favourite colours, sailing to you on your favourite music, and they'll surround you as you sleep, so you can know that you are safe! I know it's hard right now, but you've got this. I wish you peaceful and lovely dreams tonight. When you go to bed, that time is YOURS, put today's events away. Don't let it keep you from your own time. Don't let it sneak in, either, it will try! No, this is it for you today. You've had enough today. What can you do overnight anyway, right? So banish it from you now. Sweet dreams, my dear!
      Ps: I know you'd rather have Mr. Ballen reply to your text. Oh well, ya got me instead. I didn't proofread this so there maybe typos or auto-correct in the text. Sorry about that, I just want to send this off asap. Sorry it's long but some things aren't easy to make short. Good luck with your training and congratulations for landing your new job!!! I'm happy for you!!!
      pps: I had to line that saying about souls properly. It came out wonky the first time. If you ever have time to get back to me, don't feel obligated too though, I was curious about your new job. What's it in? Just curious.

    Aww I used to watch “Greyfriars Bobby” at least once a year 🥺😭 for anyone interested.. the cemetery was renamed “Greyfriars Kirk yard” after a small dogs devotion to his master.. after he died, the dog would lay on his masters grave every day and they couldn’t keep him out.. they finally stopped trying and he became such a beloved character for the area.. there’s a little statue of him outside the kirk yard. It’s a tragic but beautiful story of a furry soulmate.

    Even before you mentioned Scotland, when you said the cemetery wouldn't stop hurting people, I knew EXACTLY where this was on the planet. Edited after listening to the rest of the video...dear Mr Ballen, you said the cemetery wasn't considered haunted until a homeless guy fell in the pit in 1998. I grew up around there in the '60s and '70s, and the cemetery WAS considered generally haunted back then. Maybe the specific Mackenzie haunting started in 1998?

And I've not experienced anything scary in there before. However even when it was just me and a friend in whatever area of the cemetery when no one else was around we'd always feel like we were being watched and could hear talking nearby. I have experienced apparitions in the Edinburgh Vaults before.

    • @talon8911
      @talon8911 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, I don't think so. If you look, the shadow from the camera flash sends the shadows from the cross gravestone down and slightly to the right. Same with the shadow from the Rev's hand on the gravestone to his other side. And if it had been the shadow from the cross gravestone in the window, you'd be able to see the color contrast of the shadow on the white parts in the window pane, but you don't. Not clearly, anyway. I don't even think you could potentially argue the light source for the window-shadow being the candle because the flash would drown that out, too.
      It's definitely weird, but I'm quite ready to say that's for sure a ghost, either.

    • @talon8911
      @talon8911 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      On the other hand, you might not be wrong, either. I forgot about the other 11 candles on the ground, too. But it's still odd that the shadow doesn't appear to actually cross the white parts in the window pane, either.

    • @slidetek
      @slidetek 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yep, just said the same. I’ve been doing photography over 50 years and learned to see how shadows will fall from a fixed position on camera, and the cone shape they follow. 100% tombstone, no doubt in my mind. And I’m a believer.

    It's a shadow cast from the candle he's holding, from the gravestones.
    Ive watched you since the very beginning Mr B, back when you had less than 1000 subscribers... Your content is THEE BEST, I cannot wait for every video. Every podcast, every TM, but today, alas, this is not paranormal.

      I love his stories and stuff, but everytime It's something "Paranormal" I just don't get excited at all. It kinda ruins the whole idea of "True horror" kinda story.

    I am a descendant of Clan Muirhead, the following has been said of my clan:
    "James Grosset Muirhead [1706-1776] is also credited with the recovery of the ballad of the "Laird of Muirhead" which recounts the story of the defeat of the Scottish army by the English at the Battle of Flodden, in 1513. The Muirhead clan had the signal honour of serving as King James IV of Scotland's royal bodyguards during the battle. King James, and his son, Alexander, were both slain, along with the flower of Scottish chivalry, including the Laird of Muirhead, John Muirhead [ca. 1443-1513], and over two hundred of his clansmen also perished in the battle."

    I’m from just outside Edinburgh and this was a scary place that we went as teens on an occasion or two. The sad but heartwarming tale of Greyfriar’s Bobby along with the hauntings that have occurred show two very different sides of the same place.

    I got the pleasure of visiting Scotland this summer, and visited Grey Friers cemetery.
    We even went up to George Mackenzie’s mausoleum and knocked on the doors saying hello.
    Scotland was beautiful and has a rich history, would definitely recommend it to anyone who has considered going.

      I think it can be different if you go there at night. (I've been there too, in Edinburgh and visited that cemetery, but in daylight and with people around). I too recommend visiting Scotland, of course.

    I mean, it's like the saying about having a heart attack in a hospital, we all gotta die someday, dying in a cemetary seems like the most logical off-ramp.

      I work at a cemetery, back in 2016 a guy drove in to visit his wife I guess or other loved one, he parked not far from where me and my coworker were planting flowers. We heard his horn go off and it didn't cease. We look up and notice his head is resting on the steering wheel.
      He happened to park not far from the sales office, one of the workers called for an ambulance. We sat there for 20 minutes kinda watching the guy sit in his car horn blaring when the ambulance comes flying in and locates him immediately, paramedics get out and pull the guy out of the car, we're watching this. They check him over but we don't see him moving, they put him on a gurney and then drape a white sheet over him. They then stand there for approximately 45 minutes talking. Guys still on the gurney behind them with a sheet, they haven't put him in the ambulance yet. They wrap up their conversation and put him in the back of the ambulance, then without sirens or lights slowly drive away. His car remained for 4 days before a tow truck came to retrieve it

      @@mrbeefy604A dude slumped over a steering wheel with the horn blaring typically means "I need CPR immediately", maybe not as entertaining as "kinda watching" him die with your thumb up your ass for 20 minutes, but maybe try acting like you give a sh1t about another human from time to time
