For a directorial debut, i'd give Anna props for making a solid start in for her directing skills. The parking lot scene was very suspenseful and creepy af especially how she used wide shots to shot her character walking away from the serial killer, really good stuff. If she wants to continue to direct, i'm very excited to see what she does
Im so tired of the movies that glorify and make the killers into celebrities... there is nothing we need to know and understand they are sick weak people who pray on children and the weak. This movie shows us how tough it was and venerable the victims were they were desperate people... the run away needed a friend... Cheryl needed a career boost... and its sick and depraved individual who takes advantage of people in those situations. There is nothing more we need to understand
Hmmm… all serial killers were turned into celebrities by the media of their day. Look at Ted Bundy and even the real-life killer in this movie was made up to be famous/infamous
@thewebstylist exactly I'm so tired of that BS making serial killers celebrities when they are the lowest form of life on earth... so what you were hurt as a child that is still ZERO excuse to harm and kill women and children, and I really couldn't care less about them. I love this movie Anna Kendrick showed the heart and soul and challenges of the victims and how they had hardships which put them in these vulnerable situations KUDOS Anna for telling the stories of the victims
@anaalicia5029 yeah I agree let these serial killers be monsters they are modern day boogie men scary as hell nothing more nothing less. That all they are real life Freddie's and Jason's and micheal Meyers.
The cinematography was sharp and smart. Anna showed what needed to be shown, and frankly I'm happy to see a movie centered on the victims for a change. Serial killers are vile, weak pieces of s. They aren't intriguing. They have nothing to teach us except maybe about ourselves and why we'd rather see a story centered on a hollow trash man than the people he destroyed.
The backstory of Anna's character contextualizes the misogyny she had to navigate, which is directly relevant to Rodney's ability to just take whatever he wants (irl he was reported and the women were not listened to).
I agree 1000000000% on the horrible Netflix look. Their obsession with sharpness remove any type of cinematic feel. It's the soap box cheap tv look without the 60fps.
This movie was not interesting to me. With all the serial killers podcast out there now that do a much better job at digging into these people- I just wasn’t feeling this story. It’s awful and he’s a piece of 💩- but…. It was boring. I’ll never watch that again or recommend it to anyone-
Same here. There had been many serial killers, and except for the fact that this one had appeared in a TV show, there is nothing about him that justified making this movie.
@@VintageScreenGoddess I pointed out in another comment that the serial killer just wasn't believable. He was barely convincing, charming, nor creepy enough to be fearsome. And you're correct, because of that he was ultimately just boring. I never felt he was any serious threat nor believable as a guy who could somwhow seduce 130 women to go into quiet places with him. And some guy replied that I was hoping this movie would worship/glorify serial killers. 🤡
Never understood her popularity, I never saw pitch perfect so maybe that’s it by srry but sans a lot of makeup average looking n she can’t even smile and annoying voice in my opinion and too confident in interviews but hope she’s grateful 100 and must have phenomenal manager and work ethic
You are literally my favorite YT critic other than myself. I love how you drag Netflix week after week, except this wasn’t the same thing. You mention that Netflix gets the rights, and this felt like a Lifetime movie, but this was a film festival acquisition for them. They did not make this. A lot of these end up being better as a result, like It’s What’s Inside and His Three daughters already from this year. They also acquired Amelia Perez, and didn’t make it. Just FYI. This isn’t their typical in house garbage. Woman of The Hour could have just as easily been picked up by A24 or Neon and given a theatrical run.
Ive just watched it, Adam. I thought it was very worthwhile. It’s scarier than I’d expected. And I knew about this murderer. Maybe women will feel that more -every nice guy could be a dangerous monster like this. The danger of men to women is palpable in the whole movie. I was glad about who survived (don’t want to spoil it.). I won’t forget it tomorrow! It creeped me out.
This movie didn't quite work for me. I found the story to be very underwhelming. I would rather see a series based on Rodney Alcala much like the Dahmer Monster series. Daniel Zovatto was miscast as Alcala. Rodney Alcala had a very infectious smile. He also had the voice of a high school English teacher. Zovatto's portrayal of Alcala was way too bland. Many viewers who are not familiar with Rodney Alcala may find Woman of the Hour quite compelling. I rather just watch the documentary about those events.
Agreed. I've watched a documentary on Alcala before and it's obvious how he got his victims - handsome, charismatic, and of course smooth AF. Zovatto looks like a guy you walk past on the street. It's not even remotely close. No hate to the actor of course. Just miscasting
@@k.im.b9205 or maybe, just maybe, we want a portrayal that actually makes sense instead of mid chubby guy somehow being able to seduce every (130 presumed) woman he meets? Why would an accurate portrayal be "glorifying" him? Isn't this show trying to warn us about men like him? If this is the reality of how serial killers can do what they do, then making it accurate warns people that beautiful/charming people can be deadly. Which, you'd think, is the point of a docu-story like this? Or are you the kind who easily gets triggered with a mental breakdown if any story is remotely reflective of historical reality?
I agreed with your review. I was left feeling like, so what's the lesson here, what's the point.... But I think it was beautifully shot and Daniel was great in the role of Rodney. But yes, I was left wanting something with more depth.
I saw it. It was okay, just okay. I felt it fizzled at the end and I didn't like seeing her be a b***h on the dating game, but one would be dater was a killer so all good. It was okay, it just okay, but it fizzled at the end. This was Anna's first directing outing and she did well. I didn't like the nonlinear style.
Hey Adam! Love your channel! Imo…THIS WAS A SUPERB encapsulation of what victims of assault, homicidal and/or sexual crimes encounter, endure and/or survive. 100%- Kendrick made the right choice to not glorify or ‘win’ the audience over by emphasising on the serial killer and his trickery/seduction. This is much more than just a movie. Casting & performances were excellent. Zovatto did incredible well at switching from average Joe to making one wish they could just teleport safely home. Anyone saying they were bored by this movie, are pretty much vapid gore & violence craving-junkies or ppl who have the luxury of ignorant bliss from never once feeling true fear for their safety or useless lives. Don’t know whether to cry or laugh at y’ll smooth-brain-couch-turds, whining like little brats about being bored about actual real life dangers. 5:36 Adam absolutely nothing was lacking. The goal was to recreate what women feel/sense and actually encounter, when being *edit: predaciously ‘HUNTED’! So asking for more from this re-creation of gruesome past events is like saying that you wanted more than a stab in the back after you jokingly dared someone to just stab you once in the back. LOL
I really liked the movie. Anna Kendrick is a really good director. I did think it was a bit overdone in the way she presented women as perpetual victims. That was definitely a bit of emotional manipulation. Are these the same white women that happily got black men lynched back in the eras of the Reconstruction and Civil Rights movement? My point is that women are equally capable of manipulating men to do violence as well as being victims of it.
I usually agree with you but not in this case. You make great points but missed what this movie is really about. It’s not a serial killer movie - the name gives it away - it’s a movie about women dealing with the demeaning nature of the patriarchy and the undercurrent of violence that comes with it. Notice the treatment of the women characters by not just the serial killer but the boyfriend and the security guard and the tv host and the neighbor and the policeman and contestant #2. Notice the help Kendrick’s character got from other females - the waitress and the make up ladies. This movie was not about the serial killer.
Have you done a review of “Lake Mungo” ever? Just curious if so and what you thought of it. It has a 95% rotten tomatoes rating. Haven’t seen it but watched another review on it that was thoughtful and the guy was genuinely creeped out by it himself. He isn’t my go to reviewer though so now I want your opinion. Didn’t see it on your lists. It’s an older movie though. 2000’s I think.
