Kendrick's directing changes the game. When
true crime focuses on the gory killing of victims,
while it's terrifying, it almost allows viewers to
disconnect, as it is so outrageous we can't
imagine ourselves in the position - likely a
subconscious safety net. Kendrick's talent shines
light on the universal experience of all women.
that split second when the energy shifts, when
alarm bells start screaming in our mind, primal
instinct of danger. The wrong word that gives a
man away, that certain glare where theirs eyes
change, the slight touch, the pace of a man
walking behind you. Our sensory systems a
flooded. Quickening breath, high alert, increase
pace, can I scream, can I run. Which will get me
Killed, slow and quiet or fast and loud. We have
    all been there.

Anna Kendrick's fantastic movie deserves to win her an Oscar (even though it won't because it won't run in theaters) or an Emmy- but there was no reason to portray Jim Lange like that. Tony Hale even dressed up like him but even though the name was changed to Ed Burke, it still made no sense. I knew about the Rodney Alcala story, so watching the portrayal was interesting. I would've asked why she fictionalized so much of the story.

    • @kycone

*SPOILER: I noticed the actress's hand in the movie scene when she realized she was tied. I thought, "Oh no, did he break or mutilate her hand?" But it wasn't a focal point, and she wasn't impeded, so I didn't think about it again. She was terrific in the movie, and her character was so brilliant!

I know this isn’t the right spot for this comment. But Kelly, can you reach out to Andre 3000? He is so talented and the world misses him! I still don’t know what happened or why he disappeared from the spotlight. I just tried to find out and all the sources I’ve found are contradictory. This man needs to be interviewed! He inspired so much music, and the movie Idlewild, like where did he go? Did Diddy do something? Like can we all agree that Andre is extremely talented? Because he just is! He had a voice for his music but now he’s not talking or doing music? What happened?

I thought it was really well done from a technical standpoint. What I didn't like was how it deviated quite a bit from the true story in some important ways. My understanding is that it was a male executive producer who actually didn't want to bring Rodney Alcala on the show but a woman advocated for him because he was so good-looking, but then she eventually came around to seeing how creepy he was. So it sounds like lots of people on the show realized he was a creep and when Cheryl backed out, it was not a shock. Also, it was lenient laws that kept putting Rodney Alcala back on the street, despite the cops' wishes. And it sounds like they fictionalized the host and basically made him a caricature. He may represent different people Anna Kendrick has met, but he doesn't represent the actual host of The Dating Game. So the movie bends the true story quite a bit to fit its feminist narrative, which is kind of ironic, if you think about it. They had to bend the truth and turn it into essentially a complete lie to make it feel relatable to people. I don't deny that there is a lot of ugliness out there. But you also can't deny that it's the ugliness that is often being reflected back to us in the media that we consume, and that's what we sometimes focus on. And sometimes the voices in our heads are not much of a help either. There is a lot of heroism in this story, and I think if people watch the documentary Dating Death and look at it with an open mind, they might see that society is not against them. Men are not against women. Some men are. But I think people tend to believe the lies that they are told. Also, I really did not like the fact that the movie omitted so many of the victims' stories. For example, Robin Samsoe was reduced to a little footnote at the end. She was referred to as a "12 year old girl" he killed, and that's it. And I know it's a difficult thing making a movie and including all the facts of the case and wanting to be sensitive to the real people, etc. But for the past several years, I have really found myself wanting to hear the victims' stories, not the killers' stories, not the detectives' stories, not the story of how some random woman who once lived next to the killer tried to get the police to check him out but was ignored, etc. Not all the juicy gossip. I just want to hear the human stories of these victims and focus on who they were, not what was done to them. And I think this movie tried to do that and did it a little bit but ultimately went back to making them faceless anonymous women, with the exception of maybe Sarah who was the one I really found myself feeling the most for. I thought Autumn Best did a great job too, but the movie set her up to be the one to bring Rodney Alcala down, and she was not. Robin Samsoe's death was the reason he was ultimately locked up for good. I also hated, hated, hated the Laura subplot because it was so contrived, and it made no sense, and it felt just so disingenuous to me. This woman doesn't even know for sure if it's actually him, and if it is, she doesn't know for sure that he's guilty, but she has a hunch, and if the police weren't able to get evidence on him, then there's nothing they can do about the fact that she has a hunch anyway, and why didn't she spend her time waiting to warn Sheryl after the show instead? That would have been time better spent. And her character was complete fiction, but more than that, totally twists the reality of the case to fit a very simplistic, pessimistic narrative about men. If Anna Kendrick or the other people involved in making this movie wanted to tell a story that felt true to them, they should have made a fictional story or based it on their own experiences instead of manipulating the facts of a true case to tell a story that never happened. But that was my takeaway from this. I don't speak for others. I read at least one of his victims didn't like what the movie did with the facts, but I don't know about the others.
