Many find good aspects of Singapore but still need to find something negative to say about it. It seems there needs to be a "balanced" view. Words like authoritarian or draconian are used without truly understanding why Singapore succeeds and is successful. In Singapore what is important is the well being of the community and Singaporeans are not like Westerners who put individualism ahead of the community. That is why different ethnic groups with different belief systems can live and work together. This is a very short presentation focused on how Singapore has progressed economically. There are so many other areas not considered like the hard work needed to improve the environment, racial and religious harmony and how despite being highly urbanised Singapore still has wildlife living in the city.

In 1972 I was 23 yrs old. Just starting out like Singapore. I have seen Singapore progression from than till now 2024. ‘Sentosa’ was call ‘Blakang Mati’ than. Not develop into a tourist destination yet. My basic military camp was here. 😳 Basically, Singapore got LKY and though Singapore was poor than, it started on a clean slate. These are the 2 main reasons why Singapore IS one of the richest country today. Singapore knows no corruption than. Corruption is like cancer. Once it set in, it’s difficult to eradicate. This is one of the main reason why countries cannot progress and remain in the ‘3rd world’ stage.
I wote my Bachelors Degree thesis on why Singapore was able to attract foreign direct investments (FDI) and multinational corporations ( MNC) from 1965-2019. I learnt more about LKY's efforts in developing Singapore from scratch. LKY is and was a gem for Singapore. Jealous people discredit his democratic system because he was a hardliner law enforcer that made this to work on the ground in Singapore. LKY is/was the best leader ever that emerged from Southeast Asia.
Cant say Singapore is democratic since it has no government change since its independence. Singaporeans are under surveillance all the time, even throwing trash with get you fined to 10000 Singaporean dollar. At best its an authoritarian state, not a democracy.

Singapore always incorporates greenery in their buildings and every corners of the country for the last few decades. Saying in 15 to 20 years Singapore is not liveable and workers cannot work outside is shortsighted and laughable. Singapore does not have large areas of forest or jungle when it was colonised, to start with. We are not like jungle Borneo. We don’t have jungles and we can still live without it in decades to come.

It is not all LKY. The people back in the 60s and 70s had a LOT to do with its success. I grew up there during that time. Lots of energy, can do attitude, always on the move, learning, improving, borrowing the best of its ethnic cultures. Chinese hungry for success in a foreign land. The artistic nature and sensibilities of the Malays. The legal framework and proprieties of the British. The business acumen of both the Chinese and Indians. The endurance and high tolerance for suffering hardship of the Chinese and Indians. It was very much bottoms up. The values of the first generation filtering through the second generation. The growth now is driven top down. Capitalising on the weaknesses of the west and China. Fate and luck drives it now. No longer bottoms up driven growth.

16:50 Heat is not an issues for us Asian as we live near the equator. Primarily we adapt with the heat. There's only to season here in Singapore, it's either wet or dry and it's just summer all year round. In recent case of heat wave in Greece, we do not see any concrete forest like in Singapore and yet there's more case of heat related heath issues. In conclusion, it's about adaptation.

Correction. Singapore being an English speaking country has nothing to do with the British presence here. It was all due to one man, Lee Kwan Yew. He had the foresight to see that English is the primary language of trade worldwide and decided that all should learn English. English is our first language in school, and students are also required to study a 2nd language. Many here speaks our version of English which we proudly named Singlish, but in business you would be surprised that most are able to speak and converse very well in good and fluent English.

Singapore has one key resource, the Chinese people who are at the helm in politics and business. Like China, they are the phoenixes who rose from the ashes. Like him or hate him, no one can deny that LKY was one of the greatest leaders the world had ever seen.
Yes, Singapore is hot because we are close to the equator. We have the occasional heatwave and can get as hot as 36 C but that doesn’t happen often. Regular daily highs are more around 33-34 C. Many people don’t really feel the heat that much (unless they have to work outdoors) because most public buildings, malls and public transport are air conditioned. Because we are hot the whole year round, air conditioning in many places in Singapore is very effective. Unlike countries like Japan or China where they have to cope with unbearable summer heat for a just a month or two each year, so their air conditioning often isn’t that effective, so people even die from heat stroke. We never get extremely hot temperatures in the 40s C like Thailand, the Philippines, India, and even China and Japan occasionally do. Even next door Malaysia usually feels hotter than Singapore because they have a much bigger land mass that traps hot air. So heat is relative.

Majority are more fluent in English than Chinese, our working language. Nepotism and corruption are not tolerated, 🇸🇬 has been ranked highly in least corruption index. Any mistresses or affairs for those holding official office are made to resign not kept in office. Plan may be good, but does that other country has the ability to execute the plan. For example, if you want to build a metro to benefit a lot of people but you cannot acquire the land because they are in private hands and you have difficulty in passing laws to acquire the property, then the plan is useless. China also learned from Singapore, especially the establishment of industrial parks (SEZ), and became even more successful because of the ability of the government to implement what they learn with some modifications (or as they put it, socialism with Chinese characteristics). Look at Shenzhen and see how successful it is today.

Many find good aspects of Singapore but still need to find something negative to say about it. It seems there needs to be a "balanced" view. Words like authoritarian or draconian are used without truly understanding why Singapore succeeds and is successful. In Singapore what is important is the well being of the community and Singaporeans are not like Westerners who put individualism ahead of the community. That is why different ethnic groups with different belief systems can live and work together. This is a very short presentation focused on how Singapore has progressed economically. There are so many other areas not considered like the hard work needed to improve the environment, racial and religious harmony and how despite being highly urbanised Singapore still has wildlife living in the city.

I wote my Bachelors Degree thesis on why Singapore was able to attract foreign direct investments (FDI) and multinational corporations ( MNC) from 1965-2019. I learnt more about LKY's efforts in developing Singapore from scratch. LKY is and was a gem for Singapore. Jealous people discredit his democratic system because he was a hardliner law enforcer that made this to work on the ground in Singapore. LKY is/was the best leader ever that emerged from Southeast Asia.

It is not all LKY. The people back in the 60s and 70s had a LOT to do with its success. I grew up there during that time. Lots of energy, can do attitude, always on the move, learning, improving, borrowing the best of its ethnic cultures. Chinese hungry for success in a foreign land. The artistic nature and sensibilities of the Malays. The legal framework and proprieties of the British. The business acumen of both the Chinese and Indians. The endurance and high tolerance for suffering hardship of the Chinese and Indians. It was very much bottoms up. The values of the first generation filtering through the second generation. The growth now is driven top down. Capitalising on the weaknesses of the west and China. Fate and luck drives it now. No longer bottoms up driven growth.

16:50 Heat is not an issues for us Asian as we live near the equator. Primarily we adapt with the heat. There's only to season here in Singapore, it's either wet or dry and it's just summer all year round. In recent case of heat wave in Greece, we do not see any concrete forest like in Singapore and yet there's more case of heat related heath issues. In conclusion, it's about adaptation.

Correction. Singapore being an English speaking country has nothing to do with the British presence here. It was all due to one man, Lee Kwan Yew. He had the foresight to see that English is the primary language of trade worldwide and decided that all should learn English. English is our first language in school, and students are also required to study a 2nd language. Many here speaks our version of English which we proudly named Singlish, but in business you would be surprised that most are able to speak and converse very well in good and fluent English.

Singapore has one key resource, the Chinese people who are at the helm in politics and business. Like China, they are the phoenixes who rose from the ashes.
Like him or hate him, no one can deny that LKY was one of the greatest leaders the world had ever seen.
Yes, Singapore is hot because we are close to the equator. We have the occasional heatwave and can get as hot as 36 C but that doesn’t happen often. Regular daily highs are more around 33-34 C. Many people don’t really feel the heat that much (unless they have to work outdoors) because most public buildings, malls and public transport are air conditioned. Because we are hot the whole year round, air conditioning in many places in Singapore is very effective. Unlike countries like Japan or China where they have to cope with unbearable summer heat for a just a month or two each year, so their air conditioning often isn’t that effective, so people even die from heat stroke. We never get extremely hot temperatures in the 40s C like Thailand, the Philippines, India, and even China and Japan occasionally do. Even next door Malaysia usually feels hotter than Singapore because they have a much bigger land mass that traps hot air. So heat is relative.

While we are majority Chinese, we are not China. China is communist in Ideology and practice. Singapore is a Republic, whose citizens elect their leaders on their own choice out of the many opposition parties. Majority are more fluent in English than Chinese, our working language.

For example, if you want to build a metro to benefit a lot of people but you cannot acquire the land because they are in private hands and you have difficulty in passing laws to acquire the property, then the plan is useless.
China also learned from Singapore, especially the establishment of industrial parks (SEZ), and became even more successful because of the ability of the government to implement what they learn with some modifications (or as they put it, socialism with Chinese characteristics). Whether one is better depends on your personal financial sit and resources. Interestingly, many folks who got cut during covid decided to NOT return to work when their jobs called them back again. Hmm. But many did, I suspect cuz they HAD to.

At 3:54 For the record, Australia has had this for at least 7-8 year as well. This is not something unique to Singapore 😂. You still have to interact with a immigration officer, as they need to take your fingerprints & photo upon arrival, not to mention processing your immigration card that you would have filled out on the plane….😂
