How Poor Island Became World’s 4Th Richest Nation (Per Capita)

  • You may have seen pictures, comparing present-day Singapore with how it looked in the 1970s. Are you also blown away by the progress this small nation has made in such a short time? But as I dug deeper, I discovered there is more to Singapore’s success story than meets the eye.
When Singapore declared independence in 1965, most of its residents lived in slums. Around 70% of them.
But they had something that not every nation has: a visionary leader. Lee Kuan Yew had a difficult task ahead: ensuring Singapore’s survival in a region dominated by formidable neighbors.
Weeks later, the leader of the newly independent nation of Singapore gave a speech that will forever be remembered.
Today, Singapore ranks as the world’s fourth-richest nation per capita. With an average income of $106,000, Singaporeans are twice as wealthy as Americans and beat most Euroepans, too.
But is this the whole story? What have we not been told about Singapore’s success story? How did a small, poor country in Asia with almost no natural resources become so rich? I’m heading to Singapore to find the answers.

    1. Singapore's founding father Lee Kuan Yew and his team had far-sighted strategy and developed Singapore with clean , creative and effective leadership. The second and third generation leaders have inherited the good nation-building spirit. They really cared for the well-being of the nation and people.
    2. Many THANKS for preparing and uploading this video.

Many find good aspects of Singapore but still need to find something negative to say about it. It seems there needs to be a "balanced" view. Words like authoritarian or draconian are used without truly understanding why Singapore succeeds and is successful. In Singapore what is important is the well being of the community and Singaporeans are not like Westerners who put individualism ahead of the community. That is why different ethnic groups with different belief systems can live and work together. This is a very short presentation focused on how Singapore has progressed economically. There are so many other areas not considered like the hard work needed to improve the environment, racial and religious harmony and how despite being highly urbanised Singapore still has wildlife living in the city.

Basically, Singapore got LKY and though Singapore was poor than, it started on a clean slate.

Socrates was not a big fan of democracy …
Democracy is a luxury that young nations can’t afford to have.
Back in 1965 every Latin American nation was in better position than Singapore and richer. Look at Singapore and compare it to Latin America now, people have all the right to laugh.
We don’t need to look at an extreme example like Latin America; Singapore has a higher GDP per capita than the USA and the UK which was the former colonial master of Singapore, how about that?
Singapore is the 3rd most important financial center in the world after New York and London respectively.
Singapore must not abandon discipline and/or follow the nonsense of Western nations.

Actually having a dictator as a leader is ok. In fact far better than a liberal/democrat. What is most important is that dictator must love the people and plan for the good of the country, not for himself or his cronies but for every one of his own people. Its like you having a very strict father, being strict is perfectly fine, as long as that strictness is out of love. We should accept it and work with him to make the family and everyone in it happy and prosperous.

The artistic nature and sensibilities of the Malays. The legal framework and proprieties of the British. The business acumen of both the Chinese and Indians. The endurance and high tolerance for suffering hardship of the Chinese and Indians. It was very much bottoms up. The values of the first generation filtering through the second generation. Yes I love China too, C drama, foods and people but .....I beg to differ, Singapore though majority Chinese is not China. China is communist in ideology and practice, Singapore is a Republic who has election every four years to choose their leaders by citizens, unlike...... . Nepotism and corruptions are not tolerated. (Skater fell down one in Olympics one Leh). MPs who are found to have affairs or mistresses are told to resign, not tolerated to have mistresses while holding official office. Chinese tourists already have made much complaints about being fined until bankrupt ,while touring for a few days only. Also the Chinese chicken who thinks China and Singapore are same, asked our police officer to guess?😂 same same but different. Though our DNA is the same, different values have diverge well mostly, we still teach our children ancient Chinese values and ethics and also accept and learn from the world who has good ethics and values too, Singapore don't discriminate in learning from the world. Temples, mosques and churches are respected, not pulled down wily nily and don't attempt to rewrite bible and choose own red bishop, which is in the jurisdiction of God. We diverge mostly.😢 Lastly, Singaporeans are complainers, always complain about government😂 so how to be happiest?

    • @pringlessourcream9527
      @pringlessourcream9527 หลายเดือนก่อน

I love everything, china has very clever hardworking people, love C drama etc... But I really beg to differ on this misconceptions
While we are majority Chinese, we are not China. China is communist in Ideology and practice. Singapore is a Republic, whose citizens elect their leaders on their own choice out of the many opposition parties. Majority are more fluent in English than Chinese, our working language.
Nepotism and corruption are not tolerated, 🇸🇬 has been ranked highly in least corruption index. Any mistresses or affairs for those holding official office are made to resign not kept in office.
Chinese tourists have already complained they are fined until bankruptcy while visiting here for only a few days, and the Chinese lady who thinks China and Singapore are the same, asked our police officer to guess?😅and she pleaded guilty in the end.
Just pointing out the many misconceptions about our sameness. Though our DNA is the same, we have mostly diverge in our values and perceptions, but we still value our chinese ethnicity and teach our children ancient Chinese values and ethics, we also welcome learning from the world too. We kept mostly the English legislations and drive on the left, it is Prime Minister not President as our Head of State. Mr Lee greatly admired the English while he was a student there, he always wax lyrical on their honesty and integrity and stoicism, early on he always urged us to learn from them, the past.😂 Singapore don't pull down temples, mosques and Churches willy nilly, don't attempt to rewrite bible and don't choose Red bishop by ourselves, which all the political parties here knows these are in the jurisdiction of God. Lastly, Singaporeans are keen complainers. Complaining about government is our national past time. So how to be the happiest nation😢 Just pointing out the differences, we don't think alike anymore after few generations removed when we have integrated with people of our region. Singapore historically is part of Malaysia not China. Sir Stamford Raffles bought off the island from Sultan Hussein Shah of Johor for East India Company.

Plan may be good, but does that other country has the ability to execute the plan. For example, if you want to build a metro to benefit a lot of people but you cannot acquire the land because they are in private hands and you have difficulty in passing laws to acquire the property, then the plan is useless.
China also learned from Singapore, especially the establishment of industrial parks (SEZ), and became even more successful because of the ability of the government to implement what they learn with some modifications (or as they put it, socialism with Chinese characteristics). Look at Shenzhen and see how successful it is today.

What EXACTLY is the one word that made Singapore
UNLIKE most nations of the world?
    It’s PUNISHMENTS 😲 👋 👍
Only ONE WORD to answer your question.
YOU BREAK IT, YOU BUY IT!- Yes, you reap what you sow…
This is the etiquette of what living in Singapore means to you
What do you know about punishments in Singapore? While I have no intention to tarnish Singapore or put Singapore into a bad spot. What I'm going to answer are the facts known to people all over the world, including Singaporeans.
✓✓✓ 👍 CANING: While caning has been a thing of the past in most countries, many have forgotten about it except for some people, like Michael Fay, Swiss Foreign Talent and a suspect David Roach who have not forgotten about it yet. While Roach may have been spared from canning, it was the first fear he had about Singapore.
Although similar crimes committed in other countries may stop with a fine or jail, but not in Singapore… And this will go on.
✓✓✓ THE NOOSE: While most countries in this part of Southeast Asia still implement the death penalty, or capital punishment, including Thailand and the Philippines. The nature of the crimes, like minor drug issues and murder, like selling 15 grams of heroin or murders that seem common in many countries.
But not in Singapore, ask the family of a Filipina, Flor Contemplacion, or a Thai man, named: Damri Rinwong, a human rights group's leader who can relate the indescribable feelings to you when their loved ones were sentenced to face the gallows.
✓✓ THE FINES: People get to pay fines all the time for offenses or violators of the rule of law anywhere in the world.
Take a look at Singapore’s fines that will scare you to death. Remembering the late politician J. B. Jeyaretnam, or the recent fines for many die-hard violators of the WFH order, could be fined up to $10,000 during a COVID scare?
    MINOR OFFENCES.
✓✓ Road rage and drink & drive are unstoppable problems and they have become a common offense in many countries. Would you like to know how Singapore handles it?
Road Rage is considered a crime, It's mandatory jail terms besides a fine and caning both parties, and heavier punishment on the one who starts the first blow.
✓✓✓ Drink and drive. First offenders will go straight to jail.
✓✓ Illegal Races: Many cool guys who see themselves as the likes of Lewis Hamilton are using the public road as a racing arena like what we have seen in movies. Car chase scenes along Manhattan streets can be fun and entertaining.
Try to do Illegal Races in Singapore and you will not only get a fine or jail term, but your Super cars will be impounded, as a compliment.
✓✓ Molestation. The description is clear when touching any part of other people's bodies knowingly or unknowingly is considered molestation. The penalty is severe unless you can justify the motives-Why touch?. 🤣
Singapore is a beautiful country. Singapore has been my favorite place , a day in Singapore is better than a week elsewhere, and it stays in my mind 👋🏼👍🏼
