  • A common question that we get a lot is how to tell the difference between a hot rod and a custom. The line between the two types of builds are not set in stone and with car styles such as a show rod, some stylings can be pulled from both. If you have any other differences that you feel separate a hot rod from a custom, please let us know down below in the comments!!!

      I think that's why Rods usually had an unfinished look to them (I HATE the term "Rat Rod"). Guys were spending the majority of their cash on performance related stuff.

      Charles, maybe in the past. But now we are seeing both rods and customs at small car events and cruise ins. I love all cars. Even some rat rods are built well with amazing ideas built in.
      I just hate to see a nice original of any brand or year turned into a chopped, dropped, dechromed rod or rat rod. There are still a lot of rusted out cars better suited for a hot rod than a restoration.
      Just remember, it's your car. Build it the way you want it!

    Hi Matt, Thanks for
    the Sunday Service. Built for “speed or comfort”. After this I watched Full Custom Garage with Ian Rousell on MAV TV, and he was doing a ‘46 coupe . He did susp, with a 302/ C6. It looked great when he was cruising with stance, wheels, and smiles. Amazing how these channels are growing , thanks !

    Good information. One thing I would recommend would be figure out what era rod or custom you want to follow and buy magazines from that time for ideas. For example I'm getting ready to build a rod from the '65 to '70 era and I have several magazines from that time. (Andrew's T would have been the perfect start)

    I think a bigger breakdown on customs would be a good video. Hot rods have I think better defined "lines in the sand" on what makes a hot rod a hot rod, where the evolution of customs from the late 40's through the 60's changed rapidly along with the various levels of customs from mild to radical. That would also lead into car shows of the era and how they pushed customs to get crazier through out the 50s and 60s to all that weird stuff by the end of the 60s.

      When I think of a "custom" car" I think of it slammed in the back, skirts, wide whites and a heavy chop. A Model A screams hot rod. I have a 41 Willys coupe, it screams hot rod. Seen a couple as taildraggers, just doesn't look right.😉

      You have it as I have always known it Bill! Good job! Any other would be in the gray area. .... The reason being is a hot rod can always goes faster and still look good without fenders. It's still a hot rod through 34 with fenders though. I would always stretch the term hot rod to basically anything modified for competition because of the gray area.

  • @bobgaylord8883
    @bobgaylord8883 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good synopsis, Matt. I'd like to hear your opinion of wide whites on a hot rod. Does fender or fenderless come into play? I'm building a '36 Ford 3w coupe (with fenders) and have been going back & forth in my mind about tires. I'm shooting for a late- '50's to early '60's street driven look and have been thinking about 2" WWW's with '56 Olds Fiesta covers or open wheels with chrome lug nuts & mini-trim rings. What say you ?

  • @geofo60
    @geofo60 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Back when I first got into modifying American cars in the 70’s and joined the NSRA, one of the caveats was a Hotrod had to be Pre 1949. A Kustom could be anything from 1950 on through to 1960, Street Machines were 1970’s on. Then Pro Street came along and anything was fair game.

    • @modeladenny1218

      That's why when I bought a panel truck I bought a 1948 Chevy. Up till early 1954, they are pretty much alike. Cars changed to the Shoe Box and torpedo look after 1948.
      Now new Cameros, Corvettes, and Mustangs sit next to Rice Rockets at car events.

    • @87mini
      @87mini 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you're learning about art, it's helpful to learn the basics. I've been a car guy my whole live, but I never made a distinction between East-Coast and West Coast hot rod styles. The labels help me understand the history more. And I've seen really good work that's put together well, and is a confusing mashup like Matt describes. It's a valuable distinction if you're starting out in the field, identifying the classic elements, so if you say "Something just ain't right"... he gives a couple of reasons it might hit you that way.

    The ass up face down hot rod stance also changed the caster on a straight axle car giving it more caster for straight line driveability/stability.

    • @garybailey8877
      @garybailey8877 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Negative caster is when the the king pin eye in the axle is angled forward. Positive caster is when it is angled backwards. Raising the rear of a car decreases the caster angle, not increases it.

    Suggestion: Make sure you do not violate state law, if driven on the street; or find out the hard way with driving on the street, through criminal financial penalties, when you get pulled over = $$$$$$$$$$$. Solution: Contact your local: hot rod or custom non-profit organization for assistance and contact your state motor vehicle dept. Note: Through 'public record request' obtain regulatory stipulations regarding custom/hot rod requirements for street usage. Why? Answer: The Motor Vehicle dept. in your state is NOT legal advice. Also note, that if you abide all legal requirements for a 'road worthy vehicle', you may STILL NOT be able to obtain vehicle insurance and therefore will not be able to drive the vehicle on the street, which is dependent upon the state. Added suggestion: Get an vehicle inspection statement/sticker, dependent upon the state, which can in turn, WHEN YOU ARE PULLED OVER by the police, you hand them that inspection statement.

And everyone needs simple explanations - the smarter you are, the better you are at explaining things simple. There are lots of other TH-camrs who do work and don't care about teaching - I'm 67, know a lot, but don't know it all, so I'm fine with Matt doing whatever he likes. I learn something every video.
