    This is awesome and very helpful to me. I bought a used generator from a late friend's widow. Another friend told me how the owner experienced an engine failure and replaced the original engine with a different model Briggs 10 HP engine. Clearly this replacement engine is equipped for electric start while the original generator wasn't: the starter is mounted on the side and the flywheel has teeth. There's also a battery charging output from the alternator. But no sign of a solenoid (though I have to look again more closely) and there's only an on-off switch, no off-run-start switch. Your battery box idea is great and your video showed me how I can resurrect the electric start features.

    Good video. I didn't know this was possible. I have a B&S 10 hp that I just got from an estate sale for $35 and may do this.
    If you use a foot operated high current tractor starter switch you don't need a solenoid or the wiring job. Just put the switch inline between battery and starter. Simple.

    Interesting video. Some place rope in the cylinder head through the spark plug to seize the engine when pulling the flywheel. I've not had to... though have to be careful so nothing breaks. Nice steel flywheel and matching pinion gear on the starter looks like. Neat to watch this random suggestion. I've been wanting to make an engine welder alternator/generator from a hybrid CVT and thinking will invest in some more in the project next month since like many other projects... delayed. Thanks for sharing!

    So I've only used this pressure washer one time. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxfQauTxLT0JLSvqkq10rD79TU4k0Vz8zP The one time I used it, it worked great. I recently had new siding installed but kept the old gutters and small areas surrounding my house that weren't replaced so they looked horrible and dirty because of the new siding. I needed to get it cleaned asap. When I used the pressure washer, man it just melted all the dirt and grime that was on those areas of my house. I used that krud kutter soap and it was over after that. Easy to assemble, feels durable, very simple to use. Also, I purchased a used one to save money and there was absolutely nothing wrong with it. I want to get more use out of it so I think I'll be washing the cars and update this comment as time goes on.

    Forgot to add, my book says to torque flywheel to 110 foot pounds. I was able to do the quite easily with a 'torque stick' and an electric impact wrench. I did not have to risk breaking anything aluminum by 'wedging' a stop. One can just hold it with your hand. It reaches torque without spinning the engine.

  • @wallenba12
    @wallenba12 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well I had to table my project over the winter. I just this week found the time to finish the work. I had all the parts, but I converted it to propane before the weather got bad instead. So... I had ordered the el cheapo version of part number 695479 starter (sbs0038) from Jack's small engines. Today I was winding it up, installed the starter. It engages the gear, but does not have enough travel on the shaft to get off the ring gear when retracting. If I try to put power to it, it will spin the starter while running. Seems the output end is too long. Don't know what I have. Desperately looking for my receipt. Not a major hit, only was $43.00.
    Jumped on Amazon and ordered a generic starter with a steel gear and mount. I'm a slow learner): . It will get here quick and I can return it pronto too.
    Will let you know if it works.

    I have the same engine, and was looking for how to do this, found your video. I can get the flywheel from Jack's, but still need to know what starter to get (how many teeth, length etc. or part number). Can you reply with? Also, how do you hold the flywheel while re-torquing? My generic B&S book says 110 ft lbs. Seems like a lot.

    Did you put a stator coil and voltage regulator on the gen set to keep the battery charged? I have a 4500w big gen set and it is pull start with an 11 up Briggs engine. One pull from full choke and it is up an running. I have seen no reason to think about putting a starter on it because it is so easy to start. I did a just the OHV valves on it at about 50 hours and I am sure this keeps the starting effort, reasonable. I generally dont even think about an electric start unless it is totally unreasonable to crank and most engines, these days, have a built in decompression valve.

    • @alanamiller

    • @alanamiller
      @alanamiller  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was unable to get just the ring gear. I purchased a flywheel with it on. If you are trying to add a ring gear to an existing flywheel. You need to heat up the ring gear in order to make it expand. Then drop it onto the flywheel. Not something I've done before. As far as the gap with the magneto, it's not that critical. I've never had a problem. Just bolting it back on.

    • @alanamiller
      @alanamiller  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hope this answers your question. The gear on the starter only engages when electric power is applied. When the starter motor is running. This small gear is thrown out by another. This "throw out" gear then retracts when the power to the starter is cut. The gear returns to it's position disengaged from the flywheel gear allowing the engine to run. One important note is to have a metal gear or plastic gear depending on what is on the flywheel.

      Thank you sir, so electricity is coming from battery when you press the button continuously and then when generator is ON you retract your finger from the button and electricity is off , right?
      Sir, can you give me an advice? I want to make a single button to start the generator ( it is like I just press the button once not continuously but the starter is running automatically and then when generator is ON, the motor starter is retract by itself)..
      So what is the parameter to observe??

      Sounds like an interesting project. You'll need to search for that. I don't know how to wire the starter to work like a new car with a start/stop button.

      @@anugrahpangeran72 Wire up the starter circuit as a DC version of a DOL starter. In the hold on path, insert the NC contacts of a relay, the coil being energised by the AC generator output. Thus when you press and release the start button, the DOL circuit will keep the starter engaged until the engine runs fast enough to energise the generator to stop the starter. Note if the engine doesn't fire the starter will run continously. So add a stop button in the hold on circuit, or even better, also say a 10second timer.

      I really do not know. Do a search for lawn mower batteries. They would have a similar engine. I think your battery will work. Just not sure.
