    2:32 Mehdi! Don't snip the wires!! They'll get shorter and shorter, each time the receptacle needs to be replaced. Instead, use a small, bladed screwdriver to press the release buttons. But, on second thought, you'll probably burn your house down, way before this becomes an issue -- so, never mind.

    • @nuisynth
      @nuisynth 5 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      Hey, i agree but notice that theres 3 wires coming into this box. Meaning that they had to wire nut the wires together with a pig tail (a single wire) to go to the receptacle. So in this case clipping them makes no difference cause you can just replace the little piece of wire. Good eye but in this case it doesnt really matter 👍

    Canadian electrician here. In residential they do use center tapped transformers to obtain 220-240v.
    Also, we frown on using the push connectors. Especially with the introduction of arc fault circuit interrupter breakers being code now. The contact surface area in the push connectors is so small that it can easily arc or become loose, corrode, etc. It causes the arc fault breakers to nuisance trip, or trip because the push pins arc. Its always best to use the terminal screws.
    Under Ontario electrical code, you are allowed to change your own devices. But best to call a licensed electrician if you are unsure.

      What's your take on cutting the wires everytime the outlet is changed out. He cut twice in this video. Eventually there wouldn't be enough service length left

    • @shawnhuk
      @shawnhuk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Vernon PGros Morne - I will usually cut unless I feel the loop is salvageable.
      If it's pressed into the quick connect you're better off cutting than trying to stick some tiny pointy object into the release.
      If on the screws, I'll cut if the copper is nicked or marred. That's a possible break point if the wire gets bent or twisted, which is inevitable when pushing the plug back in.
      As far as the wire getting too short, that is exactly why it's code that there be slack left in the line just outside of the plug. Allowing you to pull more wire into the box, strip it back, and have a usable wire length. If you're stuck replugging a 100 year old house where the wires don't even protrude beyond the box, and there's no slack in the wall, which wasn't practice back the, you can connect a jumper wire. Just marrett on a longer wire and push the connection deep into the back of the box.
      If using marretts in a box, don't tape them.... Just twist them tight enough that they don't come off...
      Oh, and, don't ever listen to the guys at home Depot.... There's a reason they work at home Depot and not in the field. I don't know how many times I've overheard bad advise... Only once was it bad enough that I actually interjected. Usually, I try to not get involved... Liability is a big deal...

      @phils4634 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting that the earth wire was uncovered. UK / AU / NZ standards require the use of a green/yellow insulating sleeve, in order to prevent (or rather significantly reduce) the likelihood of inadvertent phase / earth contact (or false RCBO tripping resulting from neutral / earth contact).

    I've always heard that most electricians use the screws rather than the holes. I assume there are reasons for that.
    Also, if you're going to do this, or if you just want to know, you should probably get a socket tester to test your outlets. They're like $5-$10 and can let you know if any of your outlets are messed up or ungrounded.

    • @thelightninghunter23
      @thelightninghunter23 6 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      Abbreviated Reviews The set screws provide better grip and electrical contact. What Mehdi did in the video is called "backstabbing" and this is frowned upon by most professional electricians including myself. I've been on a few calls where an outlet burns itself because a backstabbed wire was making poor contact and started arcing.

    • @merlinmagnus873
      @merlinmagnus873 6 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      There is much better current transfer using the screws. The dinky little spring in the hole does a terrible job making contact with the wire leading to increased resistance. Spend the extra few seconds and clamp the wire in the screw.

    • @jerlynn10
      @jerlynn10 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      In my house (220v), we use both. Wire is inserted in a hole then a screw is tightened to lock the wire in place.

    • @thelightninghunter23
      @thelightninghunter23 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      jerlynn10 That's different. There are tabs securing the wire in those kinds of systems. Most GFI outlets actually have those

    • @brianleeper5737
      @brianleeper5737 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The only outlets I'll buy, which are the commercial grade ones, don't have the backstab holes. They also grip the plug much better and are designed to take more abuse. They cost a couple bucks more than the cheap ones. The quick way to remove wires from the backstab holes, by the way, is to take a pair of channellocks or vice-grips and just crush the outlet. The plastic breaks and you get a good look at just how cheezy those backstab connections really are.

    Hilarious videos (plural), BUT as far as stabbing the wires into the holes in the back of the outlet, it's called 'backstabbing,' and it's become a no no in the trade. I have so many pictures of the negative effects of backstabbing... mostly due to the fact that electrical wires vibrate (unnoticeable to the human eye) and eventually the backstabbed wires work their way out of the back, resulting in an arc which results in (at minimum) burning up the outlet. Most companies will fire someone for doing that these days. It's best to kill the power at the breaker, loop the wire(s) around the mechanical screw(s), then tighten down the screw(s). It's safer, and it is very difficult for the wire to work its way out. Just a safety tip for any DIY people out there. ;)

    • @onevoiceinc
      @onevoiceinc 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm an electrician who runs into that scenario often on service calls. If someone previously posted a similar post, I'd probably guess maybe they are in the trade as well.

      What?? Wago claims in theirs adverts that spring loaded clamps like in these sockets are much safer than clamps with screws since the spring has an exactly defined force while the force of the screw depends on the physical and mental constitution of the human who fastens it. Also a spring can compensate for the wire deforming under pressure.

    In EU it does not matter how you connect live and neutral
    Bcuz you can flip the plug 180c

    • @TheEulerID
      @TheEulerID 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's only true in those countries that use the Schuko connector. It's a weakness of that connector that it is not polarised as it means that if an internal fuse in a device blows there's a 50:50 chance it's still live. It also means that single pole switches, such as those on table lamps, always break the live side rather than it being a 50:50 lottery.
      Several other countries, like the UK, Ireland, Malta have polarised outlets as well as some non-EU countries, like Switzerland. The original North American outlet wasn't polarised either, and the feature was added as a safety feature via a wider blade (although it maintains compatibility with unpolarised plugs where that isn't required).

    • @TheLukasz032
      @TheLukasz032 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. In Poland we have mandatory Polish Norms which do specify the live wire shall always be at the left side of the protective earth contact, and the neutral on the right side, with the protective earth contact above them. This way even if the receptacle is rotated, wires still are oriented the proper way.

      HAJDUTY that's the same everywhere else besides maybe China. One hole is the live and the over hole is the neutral. For the electricity to power the object/electrocute you it has to pass through a body or into the neutral. If you stuck a fork in the neutral slot nothing will happen as that's the receiving end.

    North American plug sockets suck. U.K. sockets are a lot more secure and safer 🇬🇧
    The only disadvantage is that if there is a plug on the floor with the three pins pointing up and you stand on it.. It really, really hurts 😛
