I watched a video on sharpening knives and the presenter went in the same direction, tip to heel. I made a wood block with some finishing nail to secure my sharpening stone and it made it much easier to work with the items I am trying to sharpen. I also carry a piece of fine grit sandpaper for field touch-ups.
I’ve never sharpened a hook in 40 yrs of fishing- now sounds like a good time to start

thanks for the tips glen. is there a limit to how many times you can sharpen a hook? i keep resharpening the hooks on my chatterbaits, and the hooks seem to get nice and sharp, but i still lose some fish here and there. also can the sharpeners themselves get worn out? i bought a little one on amazon and i'm thinking i've worn out the surface of it
I'll replace a hook once there's not much left in front of the barb. The shapeners do get worn out - especially the inexpensive ones. Get the one that's shown in the video. It will last a decade or two!
can you sharpen circle hooks
Its rather difficult to open split rings and change hooks, especially if you dont have perfect lighting or or other crazy climate issues...ive always sharpened my hooks over replacing them, especially when actually fishing

i see you go against the point, whiel other fishermen say to go in the direction of the hook point, is there a justification for your method?
Yes, it works better. As mentioned in the video, the hooks are often sharper than new when finished. You can do that going the other direction.
