    It’s actually insane how many corners the original builders cut… I’m so glad you guys are demolishing so much even if it wasn’t the original plan!

      I saw this channel by a building inspector, you would be terrified by how much corners builders cut even nowadays on brand new houses.

    • @jeffscott3186
      @jeffscott3186 27 วันที่ผ่านมา +51

      @@monkeyrun I know a contractor that was asked by a ski resort to finish six very expensive townhouses that the original contractor had walked away from. He walked through and ended up giving them a list of 100+ items that he'd have to bring up to code in each of the partially completed units and then a couple hundred items that weren't up to code, but varied from unit to unit. The director of development for the resort told him "We don't care if they're built right, we just want them done."
      His list included things like 2x6s used where the plans called for 2x10s or laminated beams. Wrong gauge of wire. Improperly sloped, or no sloped, plumbing. The sewer lines were all undersized, code called for 10 inch and the original contractor had put in 6 inch. This was in 1996. Those townhouses sat incomplete for 3 years and exposed to the elements. The resort finally found a contractor willing to come in and finish them without fixing anything that was wrong. They sold for over 800k.

    I am currently rebuilding my entire deck because one of my friends stepped on a rotted deck plank and dropped all the way to her upper thigh through basically a 6" wide hole. The previous owners painted the deck planks, and now I think they did it to conceal some wood rot. My friend's thigh had an enormous and really jacked up looking bruise. So I started pulling the planks to resurface the deck only to find that they cut too many corners when framing it. Thus, I ripped the entire thing out and am now rebuilding it to a much, much higher standard of quality and strength.
    Sucks about your bruise! I'm sure my friend can relate.

    As the home owners... most cities in the Vancouver area allow you to do work on your own home on the weekends (including Sunday) and weekday evenings (well Surrey does as long as its "not for proffit"). You can't have hired crews or contractors on off hours... but you as the owners are allowed. Not sure your city has the same exemption but you should check. So its NICE of you to try to not bug your neighbors but they may not actually be able to tell you to stop.

    Jenna, the way the music goes with your edits starting at 7:44. Perfection!!
    One more comment here about the pace of these videos you are putting together.. I love that it's all in real time, not sped-up. Your edits are all that is needed to "speed up" the process for us into a manageable-sized episode. The music is always perfect too.
    Loving this series so much! Keep up the great work!

    Love your videos guys. I started watching you guys pretty much on the first episode of your demo. I recognized your location right away. In 1985, my grandfather moored his boat at T-Bird Marina just down the hill from there. I spent many a summer days sailing back and forth between there and Bowen Island.
    You have a SWEET spot up on that hill.
    At first it was a laugh at your inexperience (I do construction), but seeing you guys learn as you go, and get more confident, even with the simple things makes me happy!
    Keep it up you guys!

I only found you a couple weeks ago and I'm kinda just here for your house videos, but y'all have such good vibes and I really loved watching from the beginning and seeing y'all just kinda get cuter over time. And the fact that your family seems to have accepted him so much after your divorce really says a lot about how he must treat you. I have a Nick myself and we'll be at 10 years in a week. By law 4404, section 6.1.2. Vancouver West, BC. This was from a few years ago so may have changed. Prohibits construction noise (long definition provided) on Sundays and holidays. Also lists a bunch of other related stuff and hours when allowed to work. Who knows, a deeper dive might show exemptions for construction on existing residential structures etc.. Good luck.

I am very much a maker and Ive built my own cabin by myself in northern California. this is exactly what I love to do and dream of a project like yours. I first thought you would simply be renovating the building. today I realize that you completely tore the house down, one nail at a time! you should sell the nails! anyway, now you are completely rebuilding this thing from the foundation up... god damn you are so cool! Watched all 28 episodes and plan to watch through the whole project. You guys have a really pleasant energy and your videos are nice to watch first thing in the morning when I'm grumpy. One thing I have to ask is that you turn the music down just a bit so I don't have to ride my volume buttons. The dialogue is noticeably quieter than the music, so every time I turn it down for the music I have to turn up to hear what you say. I really enjoy the videos otherwise, and I hope you keep making them throughout the project.

    Demo is best. It's hard work, it costs the most to do when someone else does it, and seeing both of you and co. do it gives a realistic idea of what's really involved. Also, I LOVE the music choices being made while talking the walls down and then some. I also kinda dig the camera vibration when something falls. It's like being there.
